I think because of the shape it would be quite difficult and time-consuming to sharpen, the press would be a must in my opinion. I like the idea of having foam pre-cut and sorted. Heck of a time saver if you need a say there or four little Chernobyls for a quick run to a brook trout stream after work or if you are retired and lazy like me.

Tip … if you have a family member with a Cricket Cutter within a few attempts you can quickly have it set up to crank out a full sheet of various sizes and colors (enough for a lifetime. All the shapes and sizes are out on the internet; just need to do a little planning.

Dude, thanks for that. Seriously. I now have a "project" for my daughter. I was just looking at a cutter this weekend. But it wasn't priced, and I really didn't want to go ask.

@@yepyepuhhuh small warning, it is a rabbit hole you can fall deeply into. Once I mastered foam bodies, I then jumped over to translucent wings made of a shimmery material from the craft store. I stretched it out on a piece of cardboard, covered it with a very thin layer of craft glue (just to stiffen it a bit), allowed it to dry (hanging by a clothespin on a line). Once dried, rolled it flat and then fixed it to the Cricket Cutting Matt. Like anything else, some things can be improved incrementally, while others are evolutionary and cause conversion shift, likely pushing the high priced cutters aside. My total material cost was less than $25 and I have enough foam bodies and wings for myself and a half dozen friends that will last well beyond my lifetime. Your daughter can easily build an Etsy business and sell sheets of foam bodies, wings and hopper legs in a wide range of sizes and colors. Here is another tip: at CVS, you can buy Ladies Eye Lash extensions (yeah, who in the heck would have thought of that) for less than $6 and build great nymph tails, no more coc-de-Leon or wood duck. Just a simple marking pen and off you go…best of luck.

I've noticed the "rabbit hole effect" got my first vice about 6 months ago. Been tying and trying different things. The eyelash material is genius.

Unfortunately those cutters are quite expensive...

See my note on Cricket Foam Cutter at Craft Stores…if you know someone that owns one, it is a snap to build thousands down to size 20 flies.

I've tried two different ofo these cutters and haven't had much luck getting them to cut very easily. They always get about 80% of the way, and then just fail to cut. Any secret? Tried different methods, and pressures including pretty damn hard.

The press is also available through River Road Creations. It extends the life of the cutters almost indefinitely.

Look into cartridge reloading presses for Wilson type dies. They will work also.
