Changed my life. With my eyes, tying a surgeon's knot feels like I'm trying to braid a lanyard out of spiderweb. Clinch knots is more my speed, especially when working with variegated background, like water and vegetation. In addition, the easier it is to change tippet, the less likely you are be tolerant of wind knots, and other issues that could come back to haunt you. Don't know how I lived without them.

Although I've used rings while dry fly fishing and liked them, I do primarily use them for nymphing and streamer fishing. Most of the time I fish with my own hand tied 9 foot leaders that have a built in sighter. They also have a fairly substantial butt section for casting larger streamers. In just a few hours of fishing I may change tippet sizes 5 or 6 times so the rings really help to speed the process and keep the full length of those leaders intact.

or simply attach a tippet ring ring to a 9ft 3x leader to start with..like i do..i use them 100% of the time now..no more guessing what size my tippet section is anymore after numerous fly changes..ive gone from 3x rite to 6x tippet for dry flies with no issue at all....and you can always tie a dropper off the ring at anytime..great item for sure.

One tippet ring tip I only recently thought about after using tippet rings for a long time. When I use furled leaders on western rods, I join tippet to the leader with an improved clinch knot. And for the last few years I've used tippet rings to join tippet to Tenkara fluorocarbon level lines. For both I would also use an improved clinch to tie on the fly. But when I'd snag an overhead or underwater branch all too often I was losing my up to three feet of tippet along with the fly. Recently I began using the slightly weaker Orvis knot to tie on my fly. Since starting that I haven't lost any tippet to a snag or had a fish break off the fly.

So I asked this question on a different forum, but do you feel like these rings affect your presentation at all? I mean would you use these if you're fishing a super clear spring creek where the slightest irregularity in presentation can ruin a good day? These really intrigue me. I've always built my own leaders, just connecting 3 sections of tippet together with a knot, but not only is it a pain in the butt having to do this on the river but I don't like the fact that it crests 3 areas where a knot can break if I have a slab fish on. I've always wanted to switch to pre-made leaders and this may help enforce that. Also, don't hate, educate, I'm still fairly new to fly fishing and a lot of things still confuse me a bit. I appreciate any advice I can get, thanks folks!

Not to brag,but I use tiny rings as soon as I had enough of buying new knotless leaders. As they quickly became shorter after every new tippet attache. I used to clip every sort of small and tiny rings from swivels and such. Now-a-days you can buy them luckely special for this. Only on some holidays in countries with such clear water and spooky fish I sometimes like to "offer" a clean tapered knotles leader attached to a nice dry. But for the mayority,these rings are super practical in every way.

I liked the idea so much I ran right out and bought some. Now if only the ice was off the water... Anyway, I found out the hard way that you should do some online price comparisons before buying these things. I bought some at a local retailer (was a regional chain) for $9.99 only to discover shortly thereafter that you can get 2-3 times as many for just a few dollars more on either Amazon or eBay. You can also use the ring to attach a dropper fly or maybe an indicator that is sort of auxillery, or attached by its own length of Tippet to get a more natural action of the fly. Make sure to use coarse line to attach the indicator, so it won't tangle while casting.

TRICK: I take my hackle plier (E-Z Hook style) and place it around the snap between the ring I want to use and the remainder of the rings. I haven't tied a knot around the snap, tied the wrong ring or lost a tippet ring since I started doing that. I'm sure I'm the only one that has ever struggled with any of the former, but; just in case.

I like to use those swivels for my streamer fishing and I found them useful under some windy conditions casting large bushy dry flies. Twisted leaders- drive me nuts. Since I started using the 3mm rings, some 10 years ago - there is a knotless leader on my 4wt that I is going on its 8 season. I figure that leader seen 400 days of fishing and a lot of trout.

Tim, I see one person commented below that tippet rings even work when changing to dry flies. Have you had any personal experience with these rings and dry fly fishing? I don't know their effect but it appears they might create micro drag. I'm considering using them as it seems like an on stream time saver and my youngest son will be more efficient changing Tippett material on stream. He hasn't perfected the blood knot yet.

I'm weird. I'll tie on a tippet ring then I put the tipped through the ring and tie a clinch around the butt section. Basically turning the tippet ring into a loop knot. This transfers the cast power through more directly reduces the hinge but still let's me swap tippet at a set point. I can withdraw the clinch knot and tie another every 4 or 5 new tippers I cut off the ring and slip all the clinch knots off then redo the butt tippet connection

Can you not just tie the ring to whatever the size of your leader is and match the tippet to it on the other end of the ring. Or start with a larger leader size and use a smaller size tippet for the end so it tapers? Do u cut it back so the line is thicker and will float the ring easier? I would love to try it using dry flies just to see if it stays floating. Good for break offs too. I know small swivels work well too under an indicator or for wet use. A smaller ring would be nice.
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo 10 жыл бұрын
You can place the ring just about anywhere on the leader you want. You just don't want too much of a step down in size from one side of the ring to the other. Rarely do I jump down more than one size. The large majority of my trout leaders taper from the butt down to 4x, then the ring, then 2 to 3 feet of 5x tippet. I've never had a problem with the rings shown in the video sinking dry flies even very small ones like 22's.
