Excellent tribute to Dave. Such an amazing person who was always kind. As an Oklahoman, I take great pride in knowing one of fly fishing greats hailed from the Sooner State.

I was not fortunate enough to meet Dave, but I've fished this pattern for a year or so now and have done really well with them. I think I'll tie up a dozen tonight, for Dave, and hope that one day I'll be fishing the same stretch of water he is right now.

I had the honor of sitting with Dave at last year's banquet. He was so kind and gracious and actually talked to Chase more than me! He will be missed.

Dave changed the fly tying game with pre blended dubbing he created. Many of the patterns I fish use his dubbing. He will be missed but we will all Join him one day

Great tie. Beautiful and effective fly. Dave Whitlock would be proud. Always enjoy your videos and tie from them.

Without a doubt my most productive nymph. I've tied it with or without the collar (usually without), with or without weight, added a gold bead... makes no difference all versions work. Some time ago I ran into Dave's story about developing the fly over on his website - it's a great insight to his thought process. Did not know he passed. RIP Mr. Whitlock.

I learn so much from your videos that I should have discovered for myself about 25 years ago when I had an excuse. Many thanks!

Another great video, Tim. I always learn something new. Best way to add lead wire. I have always struggled getting the tail tucked neatly in. BTW, I didn't have full skin for the tail, so I used squirrel tail. Don't tell anyone. Thanks, steve.

Thank you for this nice tribute to Dave. I would love to see a tutorial on Whit's Hopper, which was all the rage when I worked in a fly shop in 1985. That season one of our guides caught a giant brown on a Whit's Hopper that was determined to be the largest known fish taken in the Silver Creek Nature Preserve. I'm not aware that anyone has topped it since. It is one of the few non-foam hopper patterns that is effective on spring creeks but I can't seem to find instructions for it anywhere (not even in Dave's books that I've seen) and my attempts to build the fly on my own have been kind of sad...

How would one fish a pattern like this without weight? Just by looks it seems like it would not really sink, and would maybe be better fished as a wet fly? But I am still very new to the sport and have no idea what I'm talking about. Beautiful fly though

Like you said, Dave Whitlock wrote that the tail material was from the middle of the back, but, that Fox Squirrel Tail was unacceptable. Why is that?
@tightlinevideo
@tightlinevideo Жыл бұрын
It’s a very different type of hair. The tail hair is much stiffer and colored quite differently than that from the back.

Hey there! Awesome tie, huge fan of yours! Can you tell me, do you sharpen the end of your whip finisher or do you buy it like that for cutting the thread? Thanks!
