Margaree Bug

Detailed instructions for tying a Margaree Bug.
Recipe:
Hook: 2X-heavy, 3X-long streamer hook (here a Mustad 9671), sizes 4-8.
Thread: Black, 8/0 or 70-denier.
Rear body: Olive chenille, small.
Center body: Wine chenille, small.
Front body: Olive chenille, small.
Underwing: Pearl Krystal Flash.
Overwing: Moose body hair, cleaned and stacked.
Collar: Highlander green hen hackle.

Love the Margaree River, where I learned to fly fish and fell in love with Atlantic Salmon. Never heard of the Margaree Bug till I was at Flowers River Lodge last summer, must have been a local "secret". Great tie Tim as always, thanks!

I was introduced to this fly several years ago. Unfortunately I have not had any luck while fishing it but I was told that it did work very well for an angler on the river. Nice mention of the Margaree and the area. I spend two to four days a week there during the season. Always enjoy your videos, keep them coming.

awesome fly... .. i am amazed by the diversity there is in fly patterns. and how adaptable they can be... there is a black and brown kind of caterpillar that shows up in the late fall here .. that may be a great way to mimic that or even other crawlers... super super fly ... J

It's a bit like the Paddy Francis but with the added hackle, and of course the body color segmentation is different. Great fly, love your videos!

Growing up I would spent many summers at my aunt's just walking distance from Cabot's Landing beach, and I grew up just east of Massey where Scotty's McFly was from. Please tie something that works on the Elk River in BC where I live now to cover all my haunts!

How do you keep the head cement from getting to thick in the applicator bottle?

You can buy a thinner to add to thickened head cement and it will thin it out so it is useable again.

I think it’s more of a NFLD + Labrador fly, even if named for the Margaree

do those hooks hold a salmon? not exactly that type, but something like it and the hook got bent straight out

They hold salmon for sure. Have taken 20 lb class and above fish on these hooks.
