The year before Lee died in his plane, I watched him tie 5 Wulffs one a royal sans vice. Later while trying myself, I looked up to find both Lee and Joan watching me. OMG. My best memory was walking behind him and seeing just how tall and lanky he was. Big old hands swinging about. What legends!

Great video Tim! I was surprised by the use of beaver dubbing rather than rabbit or possum for float-ability. Gotta save my beaver dubbing for the Mole fly!

Thank you for making this! Very educational. I'll definitely be watching more. The gray wulff is one of my favorite flies!

Haha. How many of us had the same shitbox car, rubber waders, and Walmart brand rod when we started?? I know I did. Excellent vid as always but for me that pic of you brought back some great memories! Thanks!

Amazing pattern and great tips. Definitely one of the most requested pattern to be tied in the evenings or between sessions by clients when I guided with Coopers' Minipi Lodges. Forced myself to be quick and efficient. Thanks for sharing.

Great job Tim. I have a feeling that Evan brant is going to be expanding his hackle farm to accommodate the increased amount of people buying his hackle. I have several capes of his and love using them. They are up there with Metz and whiting in terms of barb count and yet easy on the Wallet

No, that is a 1984 Honda Civic 1500s, my very first new vehicle. I drove it to 175,000 miles, sold it to my younger brother for $300 and he kept it running to just shy of 300,000 miles. Pretty remarkable little vehicle.

I fished that fly a lot when I was young. One of the very first flies I bought from Orvis, at the time my fly tying skills were not very good. They were around $75 cents per fly. I bought 5 I still have one in a box someplace. It has to be a good 55 years ago. My uncle and I took a ride to Manchester, VT in June of '65 if I remember right. I got some bucktails in the freezer, I am going to tie some and fish them come May June! I think I will also buy some beaver dubbing, thou I sure do like muskrat! I have also not tied a # 10 hackled dry fly in a good thirty 30 years. Shame on me.

thank you for posting this video. Is there a specific reason for using beaver for the dubbing rather than another fur like muskrat which is what I would use both for this fly as well as an Adams? Note that I have never used beaver dubbing & am not familiar with its properties. In a video they appear pretty similar. What tool are you using at the end to cut thread after you complete the whip finish? I’ve seen you use it in other videos & I’m going crazy trying to guess what it is.

Tim, where did you get that dispenser for your Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails?

The dispenser is a Wapsi product. One of my favorite fly tying products.
