Spent lots of time exploring both areas, and the devastation of the communities is heartbreaking. Were I in close proximity, I'd be there helping in any way I could. I was blessed to spend 10 days there last September. My heart hurts so much for all those communities & families who are suffering from such devastating, life changing destruction. This is what happens when we get over 10ft of heavy wet snow on Memorial day weekend. Spring run off from the mountains with rain. If you plan a vacation by mountains you might want to check snow pack in the mountains during the spring. We always have spring run off here. Please think about the local communities. It's not all about your vacation.

2:43, ah the brand new Livingston Memorial Hospital, built right in the floodplain. My husband & I live within walking distance from many of these places. We were evacuated that Monday night. Flood water was in our far back yard, for several days afterward. Our home was OK.

Don't give up Hope. There will likely be Emergency funds available. Stay in Close communication with banks and others that you need to do business with. Many people have a streak of Kindness. I lived in West Yellowstone for 5 years and still have a lot of friends out there, I’m extremely grateful that they are safe but one of my friends her family has a ranch out in paradise valley and it is completely submerged under water because of the flooding. my prayers go out to everyone affected by the flooding. the yellowstone area is such a beautiful and peaceful place, it’s very hard to see this kind of destruction happen to this wonderful place again (I’m referring to the fire that happened in 88’ that nearly wiped the place off the map)

Going to be where? Yellowstone or the surrounding communities? Yellowstone won't be open for weeks, which is doubtful. Communities are flooded, access to communities is limited. More runoff from snow packed mountains, right into the rivers. Unless you are going to "be there" next week to help and donate your time and labor, I suggest you avoid the area entirely.

They are now saying the southern part of the park will be opening next week. Cody, Wyoming would be your best bet for lodging. While it’s true that several towns just outside the north and northeast gates are severely damaged, towns to the east and south of the park are not. PLUS, ONE OF THE WAYS TO HELP THE AREA IS TO COME TO THE UNDAMAGED PARTS AND BE A TOURIST. This area lives and dies by tourism and the past two years of covid nonsense restrictions has already hit us hard. Now this.

What a mess. Floods are so devastating with all the dirty brown water filled with chemicals, sewage and debris. Interesting the railroad managed to remain intact. Crazy weather all over the country. Yellowstone has too much rain and we are in a drought here in Northern California. I have been to Yellowstone many times hiking and backpacking, I worked in the Mammoth Hotel one summer and then four summers in Grand Teton for the Park Service, so I am familiar with Yellowstone/Teton ecosystem. Sorry to hear about this flooding in Yellowstone.and the havoc for the local people.

The Yellowstone flooding is not the first nor will it be the last catastrophe in Yellowstone. I'm old enough to remember the Aug 1959, 7.3 earthquake that hit Yellowstone, killing 26 people, displacing 50 million cubic yards of rock, soil and mud to dam the Madison River and displace surface levels by as much as 18 feet. Geologically active, earthquakes are more common than flooding and we should expect more of this activity in the years and decades ahead.

I once lived in Bozeman for the year out of high school until I went in the Air Force & them Missoula for 10 years. I remember my stepmom retelling that story about the earthquake you mentioned. We would get many small, nearly undetectable quakes (around 400) each year. After living in So. California for 15 years & feeling those quakes (like the Northridge quake), it is easy to be lulled to sleep and forget the powerful force of nature in such beautiful surroundings as Montana. My dad had a cabin on 20 acres in the mountains of Paradise Valley. We spent quite a bit of time there. Surreal to see the flooding. I was always more concerned about the supervolcano situation of the park. The thought of that is downright freaky.

Everything I see here shows this must have happened many times over several hundred years. Just look at the river banks, the cross river junctions and at least two banks ,one near and one much further away. It is a gamble that mother nature always wins when you build near a major tributary like this one going into the Missouri River. We are but dust in the winds of time.

In all my years living here in Montana I haven't seen it flood this bad, prayers go out to those who were caught in the flood, and hopefully everything will be repaired soon 🙏, it feels so surreal it was two months ago as the river is still looking kinda high still, but not as high as it was that caused flooding.

Remember when the economy collapsed a few years back. That was supposed to be from junk bonds or something. Nope, that was from the insurance companies reading the IPCC report that had just been published. That collapse started with the insurance companies and we were told it was because of too many bad investments in mortgages. Yeah right. It was from the insurance companies accurately predicting these and worse events to come. That is what insurance companies do. They are experts at it. But were we told? No, hell you'll panic the workers and we can't have that. Buckle up folks, the ride is about to get VERY interesting.

It’s a great question. In the long run, nothing. Fish have evolved to survive these kinds of events. But you have to figure with the amount of debris flushing downstream there will be significant casualties.

@@TightLoops In the short run nothing as well. There were incredible amounts of sediment in W MT streams in '96, and the surveys afterwards didn't indicate hardly any mortality. Same with the Root in '01 when a hillside gave way and turned the river into a slurry for a month. Fishing was straight epic when it cleared.
