Though dangerous, still 2 million people exist here. As a tourist, I did not particularly encountered any uncomfortable situation while at Tijuana. If you are here as a tourist, you will most likely be fine if you take normal safety precautions. Cheers.

Tijuana is a pretty safe city to visit if you’re there during the daytime, but once it gets dark, the city gets very sketchy. If you’re visiting there as a tourist and not looking for any trouble, you will be fine. Always be careful from the police, and make sure you’re not breaking any laws, like going outside with an open bottle of beer in your hand, they will look for an excuse to harass you for some money.

I was almost murdered by a prostitute in Tijuana. I ran out of money and she got angry and chased me with a clothes iron whie I was still in her bed. After a fight, and being assaulted, and still naked, I was lucky enough to be able to gather some clothes, open the locked door and get out of her apartment and or not get arrested. I went to Tijuana in early June 2023 on my way to Ensenada and I explored Zona Centro too. There are many secured parking garages, and while I was walking around I noticed that the locals were at ease. People were sitting on benches using their smartphones, young people were walking with headphones in; it seemed as though people were not scared. The violence is very real, but the media definitely create an image of Tijuana that likens it to somewhere like Mogadishu.

I believe you visited one of the poorest residential areas in Tijuana. Many rich mexicans are living in Tijuana in areas like: Cumbres de Juarez, Chapultepec, Cacho, Tercera zona del Río, Altabrisa, etc. And there are premium malls like Península, Galerías, Paseo Chapultepec or even Plaza Río. Zona Río is also not bad. Not sure why many tourists don't visit the better areas of the city.

Ah, on second thought just don't go LOL. EDIT: see that turnstile thing? Once you go through that (and there is no one there to stop you and no signs) you are IN MEXICO whether you have a passport or not. And without a passport, you can't just turn around and go back out. TJ has really established itself in the health tourism market. There are dentists and laser eye clinics on every corner, and a few plastic surgeons as well. That boosts the whole local economy, with patients requiring hotel rooms, meals and transport. I go to a dentist there and have never felt unsafe, its far worse here in Chicago!

I knew a man who was stationed in Mexico during the service. He said that he had no desire to go there again because it is too hot and humid there with southern Mexico being in the tropics and northern Mexico being subtropical. That is why all businesses close and they take siestas there.😮

its all fun and games until something bad hapens. get your home broken into, get your copper plumbing or electrical wiring stolen, traffic sux, sidewalks sux, sewer smells, Bad internet, worse cellphone internet, borderwait to cross north or south especially on fridays. anecdotal evidence but many cross border commuters would rather live in the US side. they mostly live south because of limited funds to live comfortably in the US.

Very strange American express is not accepted in TJ. Cuz it's accepted everywhere else in Mexico. I used my American express card in Michoacán, Guadalajara, México city without a problem. All the shops, restaurants, bars accepted American express. Discover card on the other hand was a whole different story it wasn't accepted anywhere in Mexico it didn't work at all.
