Tepito in Mexico City - arguably the most dangerous black market in the world. At first glance, the no-go zone looks like any other market - yet the main thing you’ll find lurking down the alleyways behind it is death. It’s ruled by the “La Union” gang. The Tepito cartel deals in drugs, weapons and assassinations - anything that you can use money to buy. Enjoy all you No-Go Zoners 😉!

I remember coming here when I was about 22 years old. I'm from the US but my dad lived in that area so he wanted to show us around. At first it was fine, everything seemed cool. But once the sun starts to set you really feel the tension. We started walking towards the outskirts of Tepito and let me tell you, I have never felt so unsafe in my life. Once I saw that even my dad felt uncomfortable I got scared. Some cops stopped us ( I guess you could tell we were tourists) and told us to leave the area ASAP.

I an American and I used to live in Mexico, but not Mexico City. My Mexican friend and roommate would travel to Tepito every few weeks to obtain cheap jeans, aftershave or perfumes for his girlfriend. He also had worked in a bank within Tepito, so he knew the rules and what not to do. Once he asked me to go with him so that we could go to his parents' home in another part of the city afterwards for dinner. Upon arriving he told me to roll up the windows and lock the doors of the car. At each stop sign, we never came to a complete stop. We parked the car in a safer area and walked a few blocks to where we were going. Within seconds at the market, someone walked up to my roommate and demanded money, so my friend gave him a few coins. Not satisfied with the number of pesos, the robber grabbed my friend's necklace. No one said a word to me or even bothered me at all. After the robbery, we bought what we came to buy and left. Once we were far from Tepito, I joked that no one wanted to rob the Gringo wearing a Cruz Azul jersey-- Cruz Azul is the Mexico City's soccer team. When I asked my friend why he didn't try to stop the robbery, he said there were many people watching us at that moment. I have visited Mexico City many times since then, but I have no need to ever return to Tepito

It's well known. The ATF was allowing cartel members and associates to walk away with all sorts of guns and weapons in Tucson and Phoenix. Those cartel associates would literally cross back and forth the Arizona-Mexico border, armed to the teeth with American weapons. Wow as someone who is quite "street smart" I must say that the amount of evidentiary value this kind of video provides law enforcement or rivals, etc. is priceless to say the least. I just can't believe how these individuals being filmed tell their stories in such detail like it will help them in any way & they do so without a care in the world, those masks & clothes they wear provide little to no real concealment of their true identities & it's clear that they are certainly captured by the law or killed by rivals, etc. shortly after these interviews, for the most part.

I've been to Tepito probably 10 times, 2 of them I made vlogs. I don't think it's the no go zone this film is making it out to be. It is absolutely dangerous IF you are involved in that kind of illegal activity. But if you go to Tepito just looking to buy some knock offs during the day and stay the main streets your biggest risk is just pick pocketing. It's one of the busiest markets in the country, full of life, streetfood, dancing and a bunch of really fun bars in the street. You can buy 1.5L michaladas and drink them anywhere. I've gone with the most innocent backpacking girl and not once did they feel in danger and always have a great time. Me and my roommate would cruise through Tepito if we were bored and walking around Centro and not even think twice about it. It is unfortunate it gets this reputation for crime, Yes all the crime is true and present, but when you go and you aren't looking for trouble it can be really enjoyable!

As the other guy said, the documentaries are not produced by this channel, but I can imagine the original filmmaker just pays these guys money. Someone that kills people for money surely also gives an interview for the right price. What I additionally wonder tho is how they convinced them that they wouldn't leak their information to the police. Surely an ordinary contract saying "we wont snitch on you, we promise" wouldn't have much value for these guys, as they are lawless anyways.

It really is a shame, the general corruption issue. I travel to Mexico at least once a year. I have met very good police, enforcement and Navy personnel. 9 out of 10 times it's the Supervisor that is corrupt. The cartel's and gangs know who the top dog is, where they live, who their family members are. Help us or we start with your family first. That is an offer you cannot refuse.

We found a shop and the people were very nice. The gangsters selling drugs were polite and pointed us in the right direction. After we got our leather we wondered deeper and deeper into the market. Criminal activity happens in many neighborhoods all over the world... but if u are not part of that world or way of life, chances are that you won't be mixed in any gang or cartel dilemmas or violence....if u give yourself away that u got lots of cash on u, or drive an expensive Car or dress a certain way around these thugs or in these areas...well then, that's all on you!!!! If you deal drugs or have interaction with these dealers because you yourself use drugs, well then, same thing...that's all on you!!!! Common sense. That's just my opinion.

basically i would say you are right. stay out of their business and they will stay out of yours. those rules apply the world over. the films and documentaries very often blow these things way out of proportion to get viewings, likes, sponsorship, funding etc. they also help to stoke fear and excitement which people like from the safety of their sitting room at home. the reality is that the so called criminals do not want anything to do with the average "john" who is minding his own business and ignoring them. the reason being that unprovoked interference will bring its own set of troubles for those guys, which of course they do want.

I went to Mexico in 1998 right after high school, right before I went to the police academy. In Mexico City, there was not one second where I felt like it was safe. Not one. I couldn't believe how little I really knew before going.

Cameramen are always untouchable, they can record anyone when and who to choose. Why? Cuz they are immortals.

The gangster makes his way through thousands of people in narrow alleyways disappearing into a crowd. Literally walks around with a cameraman with bigass camera recording him.

The camera's not right up on him; the filmmaker could just be filming a street scene. But I bet he gets a different car.

I walked around Tepito with a camera, filming the whole place, for a full hour once. At some point a guy came up to me and told me sternly that i shouldnt film here. I turned it off and maybe 15 meter further there were a bunch if guys trying to sell drugs. Im very thankfull nothing bad happened to me that day. I have a video about it :p

It's interesting to see how unabashed they are about having conversations about murder while on camera. I assume your crew had to pay them off. Thanks for your efforts, definitely an interesting look into the life.
