@@taylorhillard4868Bad examples tbh. People need to be ready for change. Tammy wanted to change. I mean, she went on a weigh loss show. But back then, she wasn't ready to change. Nicocado on the other hand made money from the outrage he caused and still does. He put on a show for money. It was always more about money and fame. Eugenia, wanted to change, tried to change, but has relapsed. It is disrespectful to just say "people who were never going to change, never will" when we talk about mental illnesses like this.

@@taylorhillard4868 would you say that to an alcoholic who has relapsed? Or a shopaholic who hasn't completely changed their ways? Like seriously, making a change requires will, but also a lot more. And food addiction as well as eating disorder are difficult cases. Want, is part one. Then comes why how, when, and doubts, successes, failures, support or lack of it. And then finally, maintenence, which includes all of these.

And it’s like the snake eating itself because it’s all connected. If you don’t properly eat, your brain shrinks from malnutrition if it’s severe enough. If you don’t eat any antioxidants or fats your brain power suffers. then your brain becomes even more dysfunctional and the self talk gets worse and worse. Your mood is not stable because you’re not taking care of your body. It’s a snowball effect. not liking your body and mistreating it harms your brain and if you fuel your bad habits with self hatred there’s never gonna be an end goal in sight because you’ll just want to punish yourself more and more and you become more afraid of food and change.

Exactly. Me hating myself led to me overeating, and only when I figured out how to reduce calorie consumption and body fat did I also learn how to love myself. The excess body fat and poor diet contributed heavily to my mental health issues. And I also learned that just because I liked home-cooked meals didn't mean my diet wasn't still poor. Now I eat and cook with intention, and life has become so much better.

But I avoid a lot of the gym content on tiktok etc because there are so many unrealistic expectations being set, and I know I’d have to develop unhealthy eating habits to look the way they do. The thinness culture of the 2000s and 2010s has honestly messed me up, elementary schoolers bullied you if you were fat. I don’t really know if or what weight is “healthy” and in talking with my doctor it turns out health is much more complicated and fluid than this binary of being fat vs being skinny. There are like soooo many factors weight included. Appreciate the Kiana Docherty clip btw her work is great More importantly though what you say about empathy towards those with binge eating disorders is VERY IMPORTANT. I was a fat kid and my dad believed in the weight watchers logic of “you can eat anything you want so long as it’s within X calorie range” and he’d portion control my meals which usually left me hungry since the food wasn’t nearly as nutritionally valuable or filling. I’d end up overeating or just emotionally eating by accident since I never knew if the next meal would be enough to feel satiated. Our eating habits and views on excercise are formed and warped by our parents AND the broader society/internet, it’s not your fault you’re just doing your best with what you have.

While posting pro-ED content is not the answer, I do understand the point you made about how you believe people like Liv Schmidt and kingkrabbypatty are kind of a response to excessively PC culture. There is no room for genuine self-expression anymore, especially in progressive circles. Take body positivity: if you ever expressed that you wanted to lose weight, or wished you were skinny, you were vilified. They denied people-women specifically-their true thoughts and feelings, and shamed them for having them. But you can’t expect someone on the internet saying “love yourself” to suddenly undo all the diet culture brainwashing you’ve been subjected to all your life. The body positivity movement asked for too much too quickly, burned itself out, and only hurt women by policing and censoring them even more in the process. And I feel this way about a lot of things. Even social media platforms are getting worse with forced censoring. We can’t say words like dead, suicide, murder, sex, or even lesbian because those words get flagged as “offensive” or “sexually explicit” when they’re just…normal terminology???? And people are getting sick of having to use stupid, almost insulting synonyms to get around it. I think we’re really burning out on not being able to just talk freely and express ourselves properly. And unfortunately this leads to a swing in the opposite direction, to the other extreme, rather than a healthy middle ground. It’s very frustrating.

It's so personally damaging and socially irresponsible to recognise you're "bullying" yourself and to immediately validate it as necessary to an audience. "Really HATE myself but it keeps me skinny ✌🏻🤪" literally that mindset. We learn those things in childhood to cope with situations out of our control - they're a sign we're feeling that way again. That voice isn't you, it's not right about you. You are valued, loved and worthy of love and respect. Harmful language is never helpful, ok or justifiable. Stay safe everyone xx

Honestly 2020 was the start of the downhill turn. It was around then that fat acceptance tried to rewrite history and claim the body positivity movement as thier own. They turned good messages that were meant for normal healthy weight people and tried to argue that they still applied for severely morbidly obese bodies. Once that happened people stopped listening to the advice originally meant to promote healthy sizes. Body positivity was the dam that held back the whole 90s-y2k nonsense for the past decade. Once fat acceptance stole it and turned it into a clown parade, there was nothing left to protect people from the y2k nonsense from returning.

I swear I rarely meet someone who isnt clearly dehydrated, and also that people if you drink water you will feel like your IQ is going up. Your brain NEEEEEEDS it. Your blood needs it. Your everything needs it. CEEELLLLLLS. But yeah people dont exercise. Find a way to be on your feet doing something physical. You dont gotta go jogging every day. I also had super super low electrolytes so I was like spasming and chucking things for no reason, and and before and after getting infusions of electrolytes I was equally hungry. The binge eating part just made me cry, because I've been going through binge eating disorder for the past 3 years as an impact from depression & past trauma. It's not as easy as what people said, because it's not only about food, but it's about the mental state where we fight the demon inside our head that kept saying "you're ruined already", "you won't get better".

My problem with Liz Schmidt and her type of influencers is that they are 2.0 versions of 2012-2014 ano-thight gap tumblr girls who were almost openly promoting ED and starvation. As someone who went through all of this and still is haunted all this "Are you hungry or just thirsty?" or beauty in a skinny body is giving me massive flashbacks. The only difference is that instead of smoking, they promote consumption of insane amount of supplements and essential oil

My algorithm on TikTok doesn’t show any of this. That’s because it shows what you keep showing interest in. You can click and say “not interested” and boom. Problem solved. You won’t have to look at content that make you feel bad. There will be ED’s in humans for all time. Always have been. Always will be. You can say it’s a trend or not. It’s there in silence too. And it’s our own personal responsibility remove ourselves from it to not get s!ckk ourselves. We have that power. TikTok doesn’t own you.

Just to add to the Adele conversation- I agree it’s pretty twisted to chastise someone for losing weight. I also believe people need to think before they praise weight loss too heavily, when we don’t know the why or how. Generally it’s just so weird that we feel entitled to discuss the bodies of people we don’t know?? Or even those we do know, when they haven’t invited the conversation. I feel like we need to de-normalize that lmao.

This has been said before, but I think this is just a cycle repeating itself over and over again and currently we seem to be in the “skinny tumblr era”. Luckily it seems like it’s a very small subculture and not really taking over much of social media. I think most girls still strive to look healthy. During tumblr every girl wanted to be extremely skinny and it was basically a pandemic and lasted many years. Social media and society nowadays is different so I do think this’ll pass pretty quickly and people will find a new body trend to obsess over soon.

See, ED culture never left. We went from Ana and Mia in the 90s-00s to BED in 2010s-20s. And now the pendulum just swong back. The thing is that people hate talking about BED and overeating, look at modern body positivity and fat acceptance, but whatever they are doing and however much they are eating is as unhealthy, as starving oneself

It’s fascinating how both over and under eating are pretty big “trends” (for lack of a better word) right now. I was pretty deep into pro ana/mia tumblr and forms in my teens and the last year I have had a major relapse into my ed. Oddly enough many seem to be relapsing right now. Personally I think this weird mess of food content is because people gained over lockdown and now a couple years later are thinking “okay maybe time to do something”. The cost of food is really high right now too so what can people afford to eat? Watching people over consume what you can’t because of diet or money would explain the uptick in eating content while also seeing a lot of diet an exercise content. Binge eating is also the most common ed type but restrictive types are more visible. The internet is a lot smaller in a way than it was when I was involved in pro ana/mia forms so it seems what used to be kept to the forms is now just being posted on main for everyone to see.

When I had an ED hearing I looked skeletal didn't make me feel successful. I hated my body before, so I changed it, and then here you are telling me even after changing I'm still disgusting to look at. it would send me spiraling. I got to a point where I didn't know what to do because I didn't like how I looked when I was a normal weight (I was never fat, I look back on my old photos and I was quite thin idk what I was thinking) and then I came to dislike how I looked when I was super skinny. The only real difference is that after starving myself of precious nutrients I didn't just feel ugly, I also felt like garbage. Like I was always tired, my stomach hurt, and I was cold 24/7, it was awful.

this all makes me so sad, because these girls absolutely would NOT (i hope) talk this way to someone they like. the self hatred is so evident, and it makes me so sad that society at large consistently makes people feel this way, and in a way they have no choice but to project that back onto others. i’m plus sized, and no amount of exercise, diet, etc will change that due to medical conditions. i work out and eat right, and it doesn’t change anything about my size, and i even tried wegovy for a bit but had to come off because it made me ridiculously ill. i used to be dramatically underweight before the medical conditions, and the bullying i received on both sides has always been ridiculous, but the worst part is the fact that if i had been either size just FIVE YEARS APART, the bullying probably would’ve decreased dramatically. bodies as a trend is absolutely disgusting, and i hope one day we can all collectively move past it, but damn. damn.

@@adorablewaffles9818I’m betting a decent amount of money that the reason people are not as concerned about BED as they are concerned about anorexia & bulimia is because they think in the majority of cases, the obese people will outlive the anorexic/bulimic people since they’re not restricting food intake in any way.

For me, I eat healthy and exercise but I’m still not very thin. I’m just an average weight, but I’m healthy and I feel amazing in my body which is what really matters. I used to be underweight and unfit, and I felt really bad in my body despite looking the way people expect a ‘healthy’ woman to look. I was tired all the time, I felt weak and had a lot of nutrition deficiencies. I was going through severe depression at the time and didn’t care enough to eat enough food or take care of myself, which is a very difficult situation. When I finally was feeling ok enough to start going for walks, it felt amazing. I started going for jogs after a while, and I was getting hungrier because of the exercise so I started making myself proper meals. I’ve put on weight since then, I’m not as skinny as I was but there is no questioning that I am healthier and happier. Looking skinny doesn’t matter if you are miserable and unhealthy, take care of yourself ladies!

I feel like something that can play into telling someone they're "too skinny" not helping can be the thought process of them not feeling skinny in their own mind. I don't have a clinical problem, but I don't necessarily like my body either. My dad makes comments about peoples' weight quite often and has also in a call (divorced parents) asked, "you haven't gained any weight, have you?" as if that would be a terrible thing.. That doesn't help. I feel stuck in a mindset of being worried about being called "too skinny" for the reason above, due to the areas my fat is in not being something I like.

As someone from the 90s, thin was always just the norm. We were seeing a lot of emphasis on body image in media and movies. Some people go to extremes and that is what this whole pushback of “We’re going back to the 2000s heroin chic”. Look, models and actors will always go to extremes and some people want to look like that. I don’t care if someone wants to get plastic surgery or liposuction or a nose job or lose weight naturally or unnaturally. We make changes in our lives to make us happy, if it didn’t make you happy then why tf you doing it. People want to inspire and be inspired to lose weight because that’s HARD to do alone. We’re all in this world together, some people have it better than others and there will always be someone better than you. Look up to those people and be inspired to become better. This whole jealous mentality, scrutinizing and policing other people really reflects your own insecurities. Rant over😅

One thing I’ve noticed this time around is that whenever someone comments about the ED culture returning or someone with a platform intentionally promoting unhealthy habits, it’s met with “why are we commenting on people’s bodies!” even when there’s no comment on their body at all. It’s scary that this time around it feels like we can’t even talk about it without being told we’re “bringing women down” and it feels like an aftermath of 2010s girlboss-ism.

1) I wish that people would stop saying that the body positivity movement "failed." It was not a race or a competition with the thin obsessed culture. While yes, people who complain about heavier people who want to lose weight should be addressed, body positivity still had a positive effect on society at large. 2) People with a BED get less respect and more hatred from society at large than someone with annorexia, orthorexia or even bulimia in general, as people assume that it's a problem with an "easy solution."

I have a problem with my eating. Kind of always have… I finally got to like my body and weight at 202lbs. I was finally curvy after a lifetime of being thin. After my spouse of 20yrs cheated on me I just stopped eating. I went to the doctor yesterday and I am only 167lbs and my blood pressure has been consistently and dangerously high. I lost over 30lbs in less than 6months. I rarely eat. I rarely sleep. It’s nothing for me to go 4-5 days at a time without eating anything but one wheat bread and tomato slice with cheese sandwich. If I am lucky I can get about 2hrs total of sleep a day. I didn’t realize I had an eating problem because I thought it had to be in the traditional sense. I don’t set out saying oh man I’m really hungry but I’m not going to eat because I want to be skinny. I just don’t want anything to eat. When I manage to force myself to eat I get full almost immediately. I have been looking for high calorie foods to hopefully make me gain weight.
