i think people forget that the reason why you’re seeing more teen moms is simply because you’re seeing more people due to social media. we actually talked about this in one of my psychology classes. Teen pregnancy has been declining for decades. We have a lot less teen moms then past generations. You just now SEE them more because they’re at your reach with your phone.

But what about before tik tok? I’ve been online for 12 years when Facebook and KZbin and IG existed. All of these are social media, they are not new. So why in the last 2.5 years are we seeing more? Social media has existed long before tik tok and I’ve been seeing the promotions for a long time.

@@meganhopkins9788 i mean luv what age group were you mainly interacting with? mainly your age. the algorithm on other apps are much different from tiktok. these other apps were mainly friend based. you added and followed exactly who you wanted to see, friends, family members, coworkers. and unless those people were teen moms you probably weren’t seeing many teen moms. so unless you were going out of your way to follow teen girls/preg teen girls, you prob didn’t see them. Tiktok algorithm is MUCH different. you can see anybody and everybody. that’s literally the whole premise of the app. AND it was literally marketed as a TEEN app. so by default you’re going to see more teens, and like i stated earlier, the more of them you see the more teen pregnancies you’ll see. and just because we’re seeing more doesn’t change the stats.

Now they have to wake up in the middle of the night, and feed the baby so they can help their 16 year old daughter with her child. Where's the boy? Long gone. Living his best life. I'm 38, married, and have 2 kids,(13 and 11 whom I love dearly) but let me just say, BABIES👏🏾 DON'T👏🏾 STAY 👏🏾BABIES!!!!!! They GROW UP and STILL need parents!!!! Believe it or not, the baby preschool age is EASY. It actually gets MUCH harder as they grow up. And EXPENSIVE!!! I didn't have kids until AFTER I graduated college, was married, had a full time job with benefits, had bought a house with my husband, and was NOT relying on my parents for anything....AND👏🏾 IT 👏🏾WAS 👏🏾STILL👏🏾 HARD!!! Yes, even with a husband who is very hands on and active as a father. I know it's people who have kids as teens and seem to do fine, but listen to an elder like myself, if you're not financially stable, living on your own and paying your own bills, and not in a secure relationship, DO 👏🏾NOT👏🏾DO 👏🏾IT!!

Also, teenagers are committing suicide more than ever because of the intense pressure put upon them by Social Media!! I thank the Lord that I'm not a teenager or in my early 20s anymore!!! Yes babies are cute and adorable, but they certainly don't stay that way!!! It's just hard period lol! I'm 40 with a 22 year old. Their age doesn't mean anything! You're their mama for life. You hear constantly, 18 this 18 that! Ma'am nooo lol! They look to you and come to you for their/your entire lives. Anytime someone is like I just have to get them to 18, I'm like nooope! Yes, you can cut your child off on their 18th birthday and ghost them or what have you, sure. But the majority of families don't do that. Parenting is until the day you die and beyond ❤

My partner’s older brother (23) and his fiancé (23) are having a baby after moving back to their family home so that the brother could work for the dad. It’s a four bed house with 8 people nearly nine now as the fiancé got pregnant two weeks into moving back to the family home. I get that with the economy now that it’s hard to afford anything anymore as well that they’ve tried for years now, however only the brother works minimum wage, not the fiancé (she gets benefits) as well and they both don’t intend to move out until the baby is like 2 years old.

It was definitely harder and till this day I am well behind my peers financially especially and in every other area and my kids are adults now! You also don’t stop being a mom when they turn 18. Especially in this economy. Young people are dependent on their parents longer these days unless they are wealthy or the parents worked their butts off to make sure their kids would hit the ground running into adulthood.

I would also love to point out the disparity between what we see on TikTok vs the reality. I have seen a lot of the teen moms on TikTok who are middle class or upper middle class. This contributes to the “fantasy” of teen parenthood we’re seeing. We don’t see a lot of the stories of teen parents who had to STRUGGLE for everything they got, not saying that these young parents don’t struggle, but so many of these “cute” TikTok parents and kids also have so much financial support from their parents, this allows them to have a fantasy TikTok presence that makes other teens susceptible for thinking that it’s going to be all sunshine and roses.

And what do you call stealing sperm, poking holes in condoms or doing everything you can to get pregnant with a man just to keep him Because that is 99% of the cases when teens get pregnant It’s not caused by rape or coercion It’s caused by the boyfriends gonna leave so she decides to poke a hole in his condoms because a baby keeps them together And of course he is responsible if she got pregnant, even though she has many forms of birth control protection I understand actual coercion you don’t have time for protection, but guess what morning after pill There’s absolutely no reason for a woman to get pregnant by accident because they can do whatever they can to stop it from happening in the first place, or they can terminate it before it even becomes an embryo but of course, it’s up to the guys in his condoms who is responsible If a woman gets pregnant nine times out of 10. It’s always she plays the victim, says that he forced her. Just because she cannot take responsibility for her actions. I seen it with my own eyes. The day I see women taking responsibility for their own actions. Is the Day actually believe all women But that they will never come because women will never take responsibility for their actions because pregnancy and teen pregnancy is a clear example that they don’t want to take responsibility for their actions they make the active choice to get pregnant and who’s fault is it the 17-year-old boy friend, not the girl who has 3 to 5 options of pregnancy prevention the 17-year-old boy that only has one form of pregnancy prevention Can somebody explain to me how that’s fair

I remembered that they taught us about birth control and that was at Public School. At home my mom taught me about sex talk & periods it wasn't a taboo or awkward conversation. In college people talks about those topics as well like a normal topic to talk about it even with the most religious person. Even at the street I can have an appropriate conversation with a lady about periods. The older generation like my parents & grandparents never had those conversations because it was a taboo at the time but I think it started to becoming a normal topic to talk about it in the 90s.

I'm in my early 20s and finished college, been doing small gigs and projects. I knew teen pregnancy is a trap because I saw young teen moms during high school and they look exhausted. I remember helping a babysitter with the kids when I was a teen and it's so draining. You have to know you're willing to be a mom to take on all of these responsibilities. Personally, I would rather spend my 20s learning new skills, getting experiences, if possible to travel one day as well. Personally I've been thinking of being childfree because I want to take care of myself and everything is getting more expensive nowadays. In the USA parents basically has no safety net or support, like paid parental leave or free healthcare that other countries has. Lastly, in these TikToks I mostly see middle class/upper class teens who looks like they have support from their families. When you come from a family who can financially support you, it's more easier to raise children without worrying about finances.

I was 19 and pregnant with my first child, and although I was happily married, I can completely agree with social media being a reel of the happy moments and not showing the full aspect of being responsible for another whole human. I never got to go to college or know a life outside of being a mom. While I don’t regret it one bit, many who don’t understand the full scope of things, may feel that once the actual responsibilities kick in, it’s not what they signed up for. Being a mom is glamorous 1% of the time and the rest is poop diapers, spit up , sleep deprivation, lack of self care, having zero free time, etc. It’s incredibly rewarding, super fulfilling, and absolutely amazing, but it’s definitely not butterflies, sunshine and photo ops.

However, as I get older, the more I realize that not everyone has or had that. One of my friends, just the other day, told me she didn't even really know what sex was until she was 17. Definitely agree. I grew up in an incredibly evangelical conservative culture and tbh I think they fetishize pregnancy in women. They hold up motherhood as the ultimate attractive thing you can do, and make it seem glamorous like you've "arrived" if you've reached motherhood. I was 15 when I was neck deep in this culture, and I'm SO glad, my relationships at the time did not work out because I've grown SO MUCH since then, I'm NOT the same person as I was back then and somewhere along the way realized I didn't even want to have kids. I think it's so important for people to grow up a bit before having kids so they can weigh all the pros and cons and make sure it's the right decision for them, rather than having kids and being resentful or losing yourself later.

Teen pregnancy is at an all time low and is still trending downward. People just used to be more hush hush about it (aka girl gets pregnant and drops out of school or goes to alternative school) than they are now, as well as these teens now have a platform and make artistic content to express themselves. Tiktok doesn't PROMOTE teen pregnancy, nor do they have agency over how users choose to present or make content. Nobody is using Tiktok to say "here is why you should get pregnant as a teenager and these are the benefits", and nobody can truly glamorize teen pregnancy, per the definition of the word-teen pregnancy isn't trendy, it's super stigmatized and seen as a negative, as a teen I remember everyone being super afraid of getting pregnant if they were having sex and overall societal norm is to NOT be pregnant as a teenager, and it's an unintended and unplanned consequence to having sex. The best analogy to this, you can't glamorize being hit by another car, because it's unplanned/an accident and while you may benefit (think getting a new car out of it because yours was totaled), nobody is saying you should go out and plan on getting hit by someone else to get a new car? I'm tired of media saying ANYTHING (tv shows, celebrities, social media) can glamorize teen pregnancy because it's absolutely not true just by definition and the mechanism by which teens get pregnant, of which the main cause is lack of information and sex education as well as lack of resource (not having access to birth control or condoms). Saying teen pregnancy is glamorized is blaming these young girls who do get pregnant and saying they chose to get pregnant because it's a trend or desirable-which it's not, and they often didn't make the decision to get pregnant so let's finally stop using the phrase "glamorizing teen pregnancy". Basically, no average minded young woman is going to make the decision to get pregnant on purpose just because she sees tiktok/other media about being a teen parent. That's not what's causing teen pregnancies. I will say however, if anybody comes close to popularizing young pregnancy, it's Kylie Jenner. Even though she's in the best case scenario (family support, having a lot of money, etc) that still doesn't mean she didn't have struggles esp. with her relationship being on and off. As for the tiktok girls showing their pregnancy, I don't see an issue with it or how they choose to present their life journey. Just know that as with all social media, what you're seeing is a thoroughly edited clip of someone's life where they picked and chose what they wanted the world to see.

While I don’t think we should belittle people who currently are teen moms/parents, I definitely think there needs to be a bigger conversation on not normalizing it and proper sex education. How does a teenager properly consent/understand having a child when they themselves are a child? I personally advocate for teens/children who get pregnant to have abortions because you’re now ruining two lives. Yes some people are very lucky that their parents are able to help out, but that isn’t the case for everyone. And the amount of stress & trauma you go through during pregnancy and giving birth is not something to push onto young teens. Giving birth is traumatic, especially if there is complications or emergency medical care to be given. I truly hate how social media has sexualized younger girls and made them think they need to grow up quickly, and the education systems failing to teach proper sex ed to prevent pregnancies. They’re gonna have sex regardless, take your religion and personal opinions out of it. This is such a sad and frustrating topic.

Oh dear. As a kid of a really young mom (my mom was 19 when she had me and turned 20 that year) I can see how the children might get bullied and just because of this. The mom also. The kids will hear so many times in their life: “are you expected? Do you have a dad? Have you seen your dad?” All these kinds of questions. My mom has told me that many people have asked about my dad from her too after they have realized how young my mom is and how old I am. It’s not fun to live a life where you have to question your mothers word’s because so many people ask you or say you were an accident tho your mother says that you were planned.

This is what I hate kids and teenagers doing it now!! Their someone on KZbin who’s pregnant at 19 and had their first kid at 17 everyone supports her? Like wtf? Why are you supporting her? She’s way too young to have children. How is she going to afford two kids? Apparently she depends on the father? This is very dangerous, what if he leaves? How is she going to be able to take care of them?

Tbh I’ve never understood why someone would choose to have a child as a teenager.I’m 16 and I babysit my baby brothers almost everyday(mind you they are twins so there’s two of them)and I honestly think that is exhausting, like even if there was only one of them it would still probably be very exhausting.I can’t imagine someone my age having a child that they actually have to take care of full time while also doing school.ik now with roe v wade ppl can’t get abortions anymore but even pre roe v wade I wonder why ppl didn’t just have an abortion or give them for adoption.there are adoption options where you can still see the child at least that’s what I was told.but yea I do agree that they still deserve support once pregnant and they shouldn’t be judged based on wether they choose to keep the baby or not, I just wonder if they really know what they’re in for

I have a problem with them oversharing things from their babies, like some medical information, private moments and the kids loose some of their privacy and make money out of them, The kids do not have a voice in here or are protected against abuse and work explotation.Random people knowing them can be very scary when they grow up.

i'm well aware that there's a lot of people glamourising teen pregnancy on tiktok and it isn't okay but i also feel bad for the girls who just post videos or pictures innocently with their belly or their baby not encouraging anyone to get pregnant and are ridiculed for posting when they could've just been posting for their friends/family who watch their videos. i sometimes wonder if it can become more harmful to sometimes not understand what encouragement is and what is just enjoying and loving their baby

This is even worse than the MTv show about teen moms. This is shown world wide now. Before it was only here for most Americans to watch. Now it's seen by all ages.

im so happy you mentioned brooke morton cause its like no one talks about how she promotes her pregnancy instead of just sharing her story and pokes fun at it to young girls cause she turns out okay when thats not the case for everyone with less shes the worst one on tiktok who should not be on the platform.

I completely agree. It’s so strange how there’s literally no coverage of Brooke with how many followers she has. She promotes teen pregnancy full stop. There’s no justifiable reason to have two kids at 17 besides being irresponsible. Everyone says it’s fine because she and her boyfriend have money, but no one is actually thinking about how young she is, and that there’s still so much more maturing she needs to do. Reading her comments always feels like the twilight zone because they’re full of young girls gushing about how they want her life, which is so sad. She’ll definitely come to regret it in a few years once the fame stops because she’s not a teen anymore, and is left with children from a middle school relationship.

I’ve been watching the 16&Pregnant/Teen Mom franchise since it started. My mom was pregnant with my youngest brother at the same time the first season of 16&Pregnant started and we watched it together. I only really watch the Teen Mom franchises through MTV’s KZbin now. Growing up and watching girls not much older than me get pregnant and then my mom being a teen mom herself, there has not been one time where I felt drawn to being pregnant young. I’ve never seen the life that the girls on the show live and have ever wanted it for myself.
