Kids beauty pageants are definitely the creepiest thing ever ! Here in France they are actually illegal. In 2013, France's Senate has voted to ban beauty pageants for children under 16 in an effort to protect girls from being sexualized too early. Anyone who enters a child into such a contest would face up to two years in prison and 30,000 euros in fines. The Senate approved the measure as an amendment to a law on women's rights.

I definitely think the pageants played a role in her mental health, she's been conditioned to attain unrealistic standards of perfection since a young age. Pageants are so harmful for impressionable young girls and their self-esteem, they're literally being judged on every little detail about themselves Edit: I realize now that it was inappropriate to bring up Kailia's death. I literally cried watching the girl getting her eyebrows waxed by force. This is all a form of elaborate emotional and physical abuse that has lasting consequences. I'm a teacher and I can tell you this is not a healthy way for them to grow up. I've had students under 5 who were models and they were never treated like this or forced. They saw it as a fun game and the parent was clear that once it wasn't fun for the kid they would stop. It wasn't this excessive, forceful or painful thing that all pageants are. I truly think these should be illegal

I did one runway/modelling thing for a shop when I was younger. I was not at all forced and I just remember getting to wear cool clothes and the toy I got afterwards as a thanks. Didn't wear makeup or anything like that, and it was fun. I couldn't imagine what it would have been like if it was like these contests. It's horrible to put that kind of pressure on kids, and most of time with no consent whatsoever

My stomach literally dropped, I felt so sick hearing her yelling. ): All for an *eyebrow wax??* It's so insane to look at a kid and think they need an eyebrow wax in the first place, but kids have thinner/more fragile skin than adults! I have no doubt in mind that it really did hurt like a bitch. ): Not even to mention the trauma of being lied to/having no bodily autonomy. Adults can do what they want, but I just can't see any reason to even have beauty pageants for minors. :/

One time I was face painting at a family event. And one young Black girl asked to look like Wonder Woman. I gave her a Wonder Woman crown and a small bit of makeup (with the parents permission) when I showed her herself in the mirror she got upset and confused asked why can’t I give her different skin. I was so sad and struggled to explain to her that I can’t do that. Her parents calmed her down and made sure to get her some cake. I was so sad and I hope she is doing okay now.

I feel like this kind of show should not be legal. Like there should be no “beauty” contest until 18 because these children are growing up with insecurities. I know when growing up I definitely did. Wishing I was more tan skinnier green or blue eyes whatever, so I couldn’t imagine what it would have been like to grow up in a environment where you are never pretty enough.

I hate when my eyelashes are sticky with mascara, I've never had any fake lashes or fake nails, I am 27. I can't imagine forcing a little kid to do that. I don't know how instead of teaching your daughter lifeskills and supporting her talents/hobbies you objectify her with those disgusting dances and creepy outfits 🤢🤮. Kids should be kids and turn into women in their time, not forced by all those creepy people. This is child abuse that will affect them heavily.

Ikr? Forcing kids to use a dress like the ones they are using in pageants are already abusive enough. The toddlers often cry because they itch and uncomfortable. The older one tolerates it but they usually threw tantrums. How I know this? I was once forced to be a part of dance team in my kindergarten by my teacher when I was 4. The clothes were the same as the one they were using for pageants. It's sooo uncomfortable, especially for kids that age because their skin are still sensitive. It made me had irritated red skin. My mom found out and quickly put a stop to it. I'm an adult now, but my God, this is just horrifying...

I'm a competitive Irish dancer, and it reminds me a lot of Toddlers and Tiaras; the tanning, hair, makeup, the dresses. It's ridiculous. Though the reasons behind some of it make a bit more sense in Irish dance (ex., darker/tanner makeup so that pale dancers' faces don't look washed out on large stages with bright lights, tanning legs to show muscles, etc.), I think it's awful that as soon as girls are in the under 11 age group, they are expected to change their appearances so much, just to win a trophy, or even just a medal.

Irish here, lemme tell you it really damages those girls. I never did Irish dancing but I grew up around a lot of girls who did. I'm never going to forget seeing my classmates in photos or coming back from competitions in all dressed up and still worrying about how they looked. It was a serious thing in my first school so maybe I saw the more extreme end of things. I also remember telling a relative how weird I thought it was (I was eleven I think) and him saying "yeah well it's important, you wouldn't like it if you got a cake without icing and sprinkles." Holy shit just let kids be kids. Let them dance regardless of how they look FFS!

My sister has my 3.5 year old niece in Glitz pageants and dear god… the amount of cringe and inappropriate behavior I have seen from other parents. The “community” has a post board online called the “blue book” which is literally a bunch of middle aged women bashing and talking shit about contestants- most of which are 3-10 years old.

This reminds me of the entire Dance Moms situation. It’s ridiculous that these children are being forced to do things like this. I loved the points that you pointed out, especially the “the mothers seem to want more than their daughters.” It seems like the mothers are projecting themselves onto their children, and do you all think it may be because their (as a general term) self-esteem was dragged down as a child too that it just became normalized for them? I even did dance recitals and while of course not the same, I still had to have my makeup done and prettied up. The worst was the hot curlers I always got burned with, mascara was traumatizing to wear. And yes, it was uncomfortable to wear scratchy tulle and sequin headbands, tights and skin-tight leotards, and wear makeup. I cannot imagine doing pageants with makeup notched up x10.

Had a unibrow my whole childhood, got bullied for it and yeah felt bad but mum always reassured me it does not matter, I asked her to take me to wax them at 13 before my first big event and she happily obliged because it was MY choice, we had a great girly day out and the waxing lady was awesome, also making sure I knew hair is normal but it's also nice to come in to get pampered and feel good once in a while. That's fully the difference, body autonomy, healthy self esteem and supportive adults (especially that waxing lady, I'll never forget her and it was over 10 years ago, sorry you unlocked a core memory and i appreciate you stance lol)

What really bothers me as well is the bullying that these little girls (some of them not even five) face online. I’ve seen children who have literally broken down into tears on this show because of how uncomfortable and unhappy they are to be there, be mercilessly bullied online. People call them brats or spoilt without ever thinking ‘hey! These little girls might have a reason to be upset’. I’ve seen girls mocked for their weight (again some of them are five years old), called plain or ugly, made fun of for their real teeth and so much more. Clips of them in highly sexualised get ups, leave them vulnerable to online exploitation and predators. I’ve seen so many people shaming that little girl who wants to be black. I agree that it’s lovely she’s showing how beautiful and cool she thinks black people are but many people are blaming her for wanting to be spray tan herself, and not her mother who (like you said) should’ve just told her daughter how pretty she already was and explained the harm that blackface does. You know the person paying for the spray tan and who probably introduced her to them. It breaks my heart that these young girls who didn’t even consent to being on the show most times have to put you with that kind of treatment. Edit: does anyone else find it strange that TLC has comments on for their toddlers & tiaras KZbin videos? These are often captioned with clickbaity titles designed to attract more negative attention which is often directed towards the little girls.

I agree there’s a mum that called her daughters teeth jack-o’-lanterns because they were growing which made the little girl say she hates her jack-o’-lanterns teeth and loves and feels more pretty when she’s wearing her flippers 🤦🏾‍♀️ There was another mum that bleached her kids teeth once a week, she also had two kids of a different race and it was very clear who her favourite was which was her daughter with blonde hair and blue eyes she said her daughter looks like a giraffe and wished she had one of the girls head in the room excuse me 🤦🏾‍♀️

Good afternoon everyone: The whole show is wrong & screwed up. They basically sending out the message " Beauty is more important than knowledge. " I'm glad they canceled that show. I was literally like " this show is a mess & more. Problamatic is a huge understatement, try Toxic. These moms are all about image. These girls look soooooo fake. I started listening to Jennette Mccurdy’s book about her mom and she said how it was always her moms dream to act but her parents never let her so she put that on her daughter to do it and other things like dance classes. She said how she never liked those things but saw it made her mom happy and whenever she didn’t get a role, her mom was sad so then Jennette was sad. this reminds me of that.

What this reminds me of is little miss sunshine. In her home town with her just how she is, a adorable child being a child and thinking showing her talents (like dancing) is just fun she didn’t think of makeup, fancy expensive outfits or, her weight. Then her dad says pageant girls “don’t eat ice cream” it takes her other family members to show her it’s okay to eat it. She cries thinking she’s not good enough to go and her grandfather tells her she’s beautiful just how she is and it doesn’t matter what they say because he thinks she’s perfect just how she is. Then when she gets there, she does notice all the girls getting makeup done, hair the clothes, spray tans the more gross side of theses things in bigger cities compared to her small town that would consist of farmers and small town people. When her brother realizes it was the toddlers in tiaras type of pageant he goes to tell his mom “ I don’t want THESES people judging her f- them.” She’s scared to go out because she can see the clear difference herself but she remembers what her grandfather said and goes out anyway. She’s confident, shows her dance her grandfather helped her learn and, her family joins in when they go to kick her out of the pageant. It reminds me of this because sure some kids want to they want to feel pretty or show their talents and when done in a way it’s literally just kids being kids, it can be fun for them but when you start forcing all theses negative view points only you as a adult hold it effects them negatively. We never see any other girl at the big city pageant having fun or even saying hi to her like normal kids they all look unhappy and uncomfortable compared to her where it was something she genuinely was interested in doing.

I grew up with the mindset that pageants are shallow and ridiculous so I’ve had to spend my time actually learning how to appreciate that some people do it for other reasons (a lot of it has to do with scholarships) and that some people just genuinely wanna help their community. This show was horrible and even though I was watching it at the same age some of the girls were I thought it was horrific. All of these kids deserved better. The fact that they even allow people to compete at such a young age is disturbing. There are other ways to get your girl into certain things associated with pageants than throwing thousands of dollars into trying to get your kid deemed the “prettiest”. Like you can do community service or fun theater or dance if they like the dramatics and attention (that’s not a bad thing)! A lot of environments suck for kids, but there are definitely ones that have more positive effects than pageants. Like get them singing lessons, teach them a sport and put ‘em in little league, take them to dance classes, teach them how to play an instrument, start learning a new language with them, etc etc etc. those are all better choices than this nonsense 😭

Even the scholarship thing is exploitation, it's not right that you have to prove your beauty to get any sort of scholarship for an academic education, proving you are intelligent or that your situation would otherwise not award you the financial opportunity are the only things that matter. And there is so much you could do for charity without needing to have an insensitively over-organised competition over it.

I got my first eyebrow wax in my friend's kitchen by my her mam who was knew what she was doing. Her father came in and told her 'stop it she's 10!'. He'd had a few drinks, I was 12, but kudos to him for speaking up when he thought a 10 yr old was getting waxed.

I think beauty pageants for children in general is a messed up concept (but especially so in this case). I don't know, it feels weird to me to parade children around deciding who of them is beautiful enough. There are already so much pressure when it comes to the way we look, imagine what growing up like this does to you.

I almost cried when the kid got her eyebrows done- SHE CLEARLY WASNT OK WITH IT!! like the amount of times she was saying no, screaming and crying was so heartbreaking especially when it tore a part of her skin off, no matter how much the mum wants to win the pageant, she shouldnt put her 3 YEAR OLD CHILD though that! Tbh i would classify this as child abuse. Its also so damaging to the girls mental wellbeing as shell think you have to go through alot of pain and stress and procedures to make you look „pretty“ so she can be accepted. I feel like theres such a big consent issue aswell as the girls who do these shows are way too young to decide weather they wanna do stuff like that and its often parents pressuring or forcing it on them. The girls will end up getting really negative images of their natural beuty if they have to go through this- especially as it also makes it seem like the whole world revolves around how pretty you are. Not acceptable.

I was in one of the pageants, not followed but I’m shown in the intro and few other scenes. I can say pageants did no good, it was stressful and made me hate my body image and compare myself to others. The last pageant I was in I remember really crying with pure heartbreak from not winning because I didn’t think the competition was nearly as good as I was. It was a sad way to see myself and others and definitely didn’t like not being able to eat before on stage and only having sugar in my system as a reward for feeling so crummy after being on stage and losing. I had spent months learning the dance routine and really saw the lost as a strike against my character. Note: I was like 8-10 when I did this. I can’t remember my exact age.

This is soo disturbing. Seeing little girls having to put on TONS of makeup is just... creepy. Like, five year olds should not wear soo much makeup. Also, by doing this, mothers are making their kids think they're not beautiful the way they are. When they grow up, they'll probably feel like they'll always need to makeup; like they'll never win if they're not pretty enough.

Girl same. I am also 21 right now, Between 8-11 I was obsessed with the show, I would watch it at friends houses and try to sneak it when my mom was busy. But my mom would hear that from a mile away, come downstairs and turn that shit off. She said I would I understand when I was older, she was right.

I would just like to mention that not all beauty pageants are like that I was a pageant kid started because of toddlers and tiaras it was MY CHOICE my mom just supported me but I did a glitz pageant did not win and thanks to that I found the Cinderella scholarship pageant and it was about natural beauty and talent yes we wore the pretty dresses but makeup was not allowed it was about interviewing and talent and your showman ship also started me in public speaking from a young age they even judged us at outside events and how we interacted with eachother outside of the stage area

Even when I was little and the show first came out (born in 99) I always used to think the headshots for the pageants and the girls all pageant ready looked so weird compared to them when they are just being little girls and that they were beautiful when they were just left to be themselves. Now it makes me sad.

Just stumbled across this video, so I’m late to the game but wanted to add something. There was one episode with a girl who wanted to do a glitz pageant. She had done “natural” pageants before, so her parents said they’d try a glitz one, but she couldn’t do full-glam. So no flippers, hair pieces, or spray tans, and only minimal makeup, etc. I watched it as a teenager and remember thinking “man, this mom is dumb. Obviously the daughter isn’t going to win.” The daughter didn’t place and was bummed, but the mom was like “oh, well. She did her best. Obviously glitz pageants aren’t for us. No big deal” I realize now that the editing and everything made the mom out to be strange for not doing full glitz and portrayed natural pageants as a lesser, cheap (maybe fake?) version of glitz pageants.

One time I was five years old and i was going to a wedding my mom let my put a little bit of powder and blush on I was so happy and excited btw my mom doesn't where much makeup and is natural so the little makeup she wears she used to hid it from me. And I remember when I was ten I was going to a school dance my mom let me were here lipstick and my grandma's eyeliner I was really happy and made sure not to ruin the makeup I also took my friends eyeshadow but I am happy that my mom let me have a childhood she was the best mom to me ever

I loved this show in my early 20’s. I was training my lil sis to be in pageants and I knew if I had a daughter I’d put her in pageants. Then one day watching an episode(little girl portraying Dolly Parton with the cone breasts) it clicked that that pageants were not actually appropriate for kids

yes to everything you said! They had a natural one that they rarely shown & I always wondered why? Why couldn't the little girls have on some lip gloss, cute polish, & some bows in their hair?! They can still wear the big dresses & stuff, but all of the tanning, fake teeth, fake hair was a lot. I remember when they would show their headshots pics all glammed up & it was wild how grown they looked!

When I started getting my eyebrows waxed at 13 or 14,I found it painful. Even still to this day. But getting them waxed at that young of an age. NO! There skin is still soft and delicate and definitely just wrong on so many levels.

New to your channel! I appreciate seeing a video on this, because I agree that the show was very problematic. From the beauty standards to the exploitation to the catering to pedos (just look at Chrissy Teigan's old tweets) to the sugar and Red Bull..... But my heart stopped at the little girl's screams when she didn't want to be waxed. How can any mom ignore that?? I know the fear she felt in that moment, the sheer terror, though mine was due to something else. And to think, it wasn't even a necessary thing. Broke my heart.
