Feel sorry for Chew as the old axiom “he who pays the piper calls the tune” manifested here, unless his conviction to his conscience prevails. How can a foreign government controlled business enterprise operating in another country justify for protection under the constitutional right of that country unless it becomes a bona fide local enterprise, which means ByteDance has to divest its holding interest which is what the US bill is all about.

It's the freedom of expression of 140 million Americans that is under threat. Of course, it's protected. Plus, they've made it so that Oracle can monitor all of their algorithms and data flows so that they have proof that there are no shenanigans going on, and that there's no suspicious access to data from China. It's almost outrageous that they had to do this. Imagine if all the countries in the world started complaining about Facebook, Instagram, KZbin, etc. because Section 702 allows US Gov to easily pull information about foreign nationals. Which they perhaps should. But the point is that it's still a bad direction that's harmful for the development of the internet. Politicians generally represent outdated ways of thinking that don't match well with modern realities... And they don't know where to draw the line and stop grasping for more power.

If USA bans tiktok , how much revenue will it lose and how will this affect chew's ability to pay for his instalment of his GCB in the spore? Should chew be chewing on the issue? No software has proprietary rights in a many ways. YT can replace TT

Difficult to say, but it looks like they're going to make a fight of it... Which they should... They've gone above and beyond to prove that their above board (to the point of letting Oracle monitor everything TikTok). At this point, it's just an outrage for US Gov to say that it doesn't believe them. Although, I can believe that US politicians don't actually understand the efforts that TikTok has gone to, to prove that they're being honest. That or they don't believe it because they don't want to... And because it goes against the position they've publicly taken and changing their stance would mean embarrassment in front of voters. We really need to change the political culture in the US so that it's easier for people to admit that they were wrong.

Americans aren't sheep. And VPNs are cheap and easy to use. TikTok may lose US revenue though. Which they could work around if they want to. But that would likely create even more drama. Fighting it out in court is the proper, American thing to do.

I'd bet 80% that the Supreme Court declares the new law unconstitutional... Especially given that they can prove that there's no Chinese influence (thanks to giving Oracle complete access to everything TikTok) Humiliation for US politicians imminent... Most likely, even if they win, it'll still look unjust. And if Americans decide to just use a VPN to access TikTok, that's another insult to US politicians.

Modern standards of living depend on modern global trade... As if we're not already feeling the inflation caused by damage to international supply chains. If you want things to actually become cheaper (instead of just not becoming more expensive), and for the average person to be able to have more again, world trade needs to be fixed. These are pointless conflicts, seriously. It's also just dangerous to start a new Cold War in a time of advancing technology... There's no way to predict what horrors people might create in the future because we made them hate us. Even places like Afghanistan might become dangerous in the future. A China that really wants the US to fall, and allied with a bunch of other countries (like India, Russia, etc.), is just a headache waiting to happen. We'd be better off just getting together and figuring out how to achieve a decent win-win for everyone.

The US is a relatively lawful country. Even chance that TikTok wins in court. Which would make for some legit drama... But is probably also good for international faith in US systems. "We don't like you and we're going to steal your stuff" just sets a horrible precedent.

Facebook would not have needed major tweaks to get into China. They just chose not to. The Chinese government is not that averse to criticism, but they hate disorder, and things that might lead up to violence or riots. And it's not like Facebook didn't suppress "Covid misinformation" or "The Hunter Biden story". So, the precedent of bending to governments is there.

Well, with Oracle monitoring everything, it should be impossible for there to be a security issue. More so once all the data is finally moved onto Oracle Cloud, and Oracle can monitor absolutely everything being accessed in any way.
