I don’t feel like blaming Bella Poarch though cause she has a very unique experience with the music that she made at the time. She may not have had the type of power Melanie or Olivia had, which changed the music game and made incredibly incredible music, but still. Knowing Bella’s backstory and stuff, the music helped her have a better life in which she deserved. So I wouldn’t say it’s Bella’s fault, but the people following it ig?

The reasoning for blaming Olivia is so flimsy omg. She's a young songwriter. Her songs aren't the most technically composed or the most maturely written, but like you said it FEELS genuine. Yup, I also think it’s a gap that’s filled pretty well with just Melanie Martinez. It’s one of those things that can be a defining aesthetic for one or two artists but it feels oversaturated if it’s copied a lot. Also Melanies entire brand is revolved around her aesthetic, it’s just not the same with a relatively normal dressed adult screaming at a teddy bear sampling a nursery rhyme. It’s a completely different artistic vibe imo

Little Mix also have a song called ABCDEFU released back in 2016, and if they had a pretty good marketing team and support from their label like Gayle did, and if Tiktok was popular back then, we may have had something like that before. Little Mix could have started the nursery rhyme trend, it did have the authenticity, but just not the right amount of resources to. Although they touched our hearts with other songs way before ABCDEFU, their hard work is still looked upon 'incorrectly' because of how media portrays females. anyone else noticed how most music nowadays sound like jokes? I dunno if it is because of Tik tok, but so many songs nowadays look they were just made for the lols idk, there are too many recent songs I can't take seriously for some reason, and every time I hear I just bust out laughing for how ridiculous, dumb or funny it is everything from Olivia Rodrigo, this damn ABC song, that one song that goes "whatchu doing, where you at?" - this one song got to be a joke single, there is no way someone wrote that song for real

JUST MY OPINION: The thing about Gayle’s song, even if we remove the silly little nursery rhyme, it’s still a not-so-good song. The melodies are extremely basic, nothing memorable or special, and so is the production. The lyrics have absolutely no cleverness behind it, it’s just naming things she hates about her ex. Her song is essentially vanilla flavor ice cream. It’s not dreadful to listen to, it doesn’t make my ears bleed, it’s just meh. But tbf, she is a teenager, so I don’t expect masterfulness from her yet.

I would actually find it interesting if someone made a song BASED off the nursery rhyme and turned into something new. Like maybe a song that takes the rhyme and uses symbolism. Example, maybe a song loosely based off twinkle little star, and the song is about the singer missing the star (who is a representation for someone no longer in their life without being specific)

If you’re looking for something similar to that, i would recommend melanie martinez! she has songs that use childlike names and such, but then she uses metaphors to bring a whole new meaning to it.

1:48 this is “jealousy, jealousy” erasure (though one could argue she’s somewhat saying she’s jealous of the ex’s new girl based on the similar theme in lyrics to the other songs on the album therefore making it a breakup song, i personally choose to believe it is what it is at face value as a social commentary on beauty standards and how it affects peoples self esteem 😅)

Also also, I feel like most of these songs are doing what a lot of some of these shitty video games being pumped out in Unity…it’s just to get some duets or funny clips that get quick and large amount of views. i think a better use for, like, "childlike themes, but angry" is a song directed towards like, a toxic ex-friend you had when you were young or a shitty caretaker. like, in a way of like "you ruined my childhood but im taking it back" like i feel like when its over an ex it doesnt make sense thematically but i think a song that instead of "fuck my ex" was "fuck my shitty abusive mom" that called back to childhood elements would be like.... REALLY good? obviously with the right amount of skill and everything like you get that but i think the theming of "you stole my childhood from me so im TAKING IT BACK and MAKING IT MINE" would be....kinda cool as hell. actually.

I think people need to understand that almost no one "writing" top-charting songs are actually writing their own music. Some faceless, nameless person with far more experience in the industry is writing catchy tunes with the help of some big producer and a massive capitalist multi-billion dollar corporation backs it up with money. But we like to think "we" found their music or that it somehow grew naturally. Nope. That's not even close to how it works. These corporations have such a strong hold in the music industry it operates like a mafia. Almost all these top performing artists are manufactured celebrities nowadays. Long gone are they days where you'd write music, play in coffee shops and bars, produce your own music until you finally get noticed enough to "make it". The industry doesn't want creative artists, they only want performers they can control.
