The idea that DIY skincare is appealing to people because it’s more “natural” and “affordable” is one I’ve heard from several different people, and I’m not saying it’s incorrect… but I just want to add another take that I don’t see too often. When I was a teenager DIY skincare was a go to because it was accessible. I didn’t have money and I felt awful asking my parents for anything other then the most basic and cheapest face wash. If that cleanser wasn’t working out… didn’t matter, I had to use it up because money was spent on it (this was my own doing BTW, I’m sure if I had asked my parents would have bought me different products. I just didn’t want to be a burden because I knew money was a struggle). When I got desperate (because the one super drying Clean & Clear face wash I had wasn’t cutting it) I would go around the house and grab a little of whatever we already had on hand. Baking soda, honey, lemon juice, olive oil, vinegar, toothpaste, oatmeal, salt- just whatever I could find. I never would have gone and intentionally asked for these items to be bought for the sole purpose of skincare. That being said… I did feel a little guilty for sneaking and using these items for skincare, but I guess I reasoned that the occasional teaspoon of baking soda wouldn’t be missed. Of course my skin didn’t improve because 1. I certainly wasn’t doing DIY skincare everyday and 2. DIY skincare just is nowhere near as effective as formulated products (sometimes it’s doing more harm than good) But of course, that’s just my experience.

There was also the instant gratification aspect of it. When I was 15 I'd have had to bike or walk to a Walgreens vs walking across the house to whip up something right away. It was fun, accessible, and something I could do that very moment so it was very appealing

I no longer can justify wasting food on questionable skincare crap. The last thing I tried involved yogurt and turmeric, and it stank so much I had to put it in a little bag and throw it out. Never again. Food belongs in my stomach, not on my face. Plus, a lot of DIY concoctions are terrible for plumbing.

When I was in my freshman year of high school I started to get a really big angry acne nodule. I was so terrified of going to school with that on my face, and I had heard about the apple cider vinegar thing in a magazine. I soaked apple cider vinegar on a paper towel and held it over my spot for around 20 minutes, adding more anytime the towel started to dry out. It completely burned through the top layers of my skin and gave me a chemical burn. I woke up the next day with a giant deep scab, and still have a scar on my cheek to this day, though it is faded now. I don’t use acv on my face anymore.

The baking soda/ACV/honey concoction is actually extra hilarious because while both baking soda and vinegar on their own are rough on skin, I'm pretty sure together they neutralise each other to their relevant salt and water. While I don't know what the salt would be here and whether it would be harsh on skin, at least the basic property of the baking soda and the acidity of the ACV won't be a problem 😅

I can confidently confirm that lancing a pustule prior to putting a pimple patch is BOMB. In esthetics school as well as working in the field, we’ve always been advised to lance them for easier extraction and it should only create a passageway to minimize the amount of stress you would put on that area while popping it. One of my dearest senior estheticians practices this method and has the best results from her clients. ❤

So about that pimple patch video. That tiny little needle is called a lancet. I think the use is... just a little bit correct. If you have pimples that have the "eye", that white spot where you can visibly see the pus, you would lance the "eye" so there's an opening for the hydro-colloid patch to draw out the fluid from inside. I wouldn't recommend this for cystic acne or pimples without that "eye", or lancing the inflamed skin around the "eye". Edit: Also please please please sanitize the area you are lancing with a sanitizer. When I was a nursing aide we use a brown liquid, povidone-iodine (Betadine wound solution) on and around the area.You do not want to lance on an unsanitized area and introduce more bacteria.

I sometimes get like cystic acne brought in by hormones, at a certain point it get SO painful, my boyfriend has a box of like diabetes tester needles same as the kinds in that video, and honestly I have totally used them to get those horrible deep pimples out, I have never thought to put a patch over but will for sure try next time and see if it makes a difference in healing/darkness.

I puncture my pimples with a diabetes lancet then put a pimple patch over it. I think that kit is way over priced! You can get a whole box of lancets and pimple patches for waaay less than the kit costs.

I’m an Esthie and you can honestly just buy a stainless steel lancet in a extraction tool kit that can be used over and over & than just keep those patches on hand. I’d maybe include a spot treatment. But definitely no need for a kit. Just a tool that can be reused & sanitized with alcohol some spot treatment and a patch. Definitely better than picking so if ur gonna over spend just get a facial lol

Seen many a dermatologist prick a pimple, it breaks the skin that might have built over the /blackhead/whitehead/pimple allowing what's inside to be removed easier, so i'd expect what ever is in the patch has quicker access inside and its cover over it to protects it too. Id say you'd need a magnifying mirror to get the right place to prick it though.

DIY skincare was understandable back in the early 2000s. Good skincare was expansive and not readily available in some places. Nowadays supermarket is expansive. You can get decent drugstore skincare for good prices, but pretty sure supermarket won't be cheap. Not to say of the risk of messing up even more your skin. Now on the pimple patches, the idea puts me off immediatly. My skin is very sensitive, my pain tolerance very low, and the pimples hurt, last thing I want is a needle anywhere close.

I believe what the Smacne kit is using are sterile lancets, diabetics use them for glucose testing. Some of them have a very tiny gauge (size) and that is what dermatologists or estheticians may use for very careful extractions. It can be done safely if the area is sterilized first and then just gently opening a closed comedone or whitehead. Then immediately putting a patch over, which will soak up the fluid. This actually does prevent bacteria from spreading or potentially making a blemish worse from squeezing and makes scarring less likely. But it's specifically for white heads, not like, closed, deep, cysts.

I think the lancet idea could be ok as long as you’re careful and you know how to do it cleanly, but the thing that bothers me is the packaging. They say they’re sterile needles, but the second you open the bag and grab one, the rest are no longer sterile. While I know this is less wasteful, I wouldn’t really trust it unless they were individually packaged.

Idk about the needles thing for acne... But I have found that when I gently pop spots (which are "ready") they heal quicker and honestly the PIHP is exactly the same as if I'd left it anyway so... I usually do pop them. 😂 I would imagine that using a little needle is better than squeezing because you're creating a small, uniform hole whereas with squeezing you're applying pressure and it's potentially going to "rupture" unevenly and cause more damage? Which would lead to more scarring/redness? So in theory I think it sounds like an optimal way to deal with spots. I'm not an expert though so my thoughts could be complete garbage lol.

I gave up on trying to not pop acne a long time ago. My skin is so thin, they pop at the slightest pressure anyway when they're "ready", and I prefer to handle them myself rather than waking up with crusted pus on my face. One time my dermatologist tried to "clean" my neck and chin with all those sterile tools and gloves and shit, and 99% of the spots re-created a pimple in 24 hours, which doesn't happen when I do it, so I don't even care about all those tools.....2 Qtips are enough for me lol

Also, must add. Best ever recommendation from James-Erborian CC cream (“Clair” for me) I did’t believe that each of the three (soon to be four) shades would work on multiple shades and tones. But I tried it on my mom who is about 2 shades darker (but still well into the fair or light category) and is olive toned, while I am a very rosy cool undertone. And “Clair” suits us both, perfectly. It’s very light coverage, but evens out your skin tone, and leaves an lovely luminous finish. It also had great skin care properties as well, run, do not walk to get this product. It’s hard to find, but well worth it, and pretty reasonable at about $40 US and a little goes a long way.

Glycolic acid can cause irritation to melanated skin because the molecules in glycolic acid are smaller than other acids. The smaller molecules penetrate rapidly and this can cause the skin to have an inflammatory reaction. I would recommend lactic acid for melanated s.kin

Personally, I sometimes only apply sunscreen in the morning, if I know I'm not going to leave the house much. I.e. today I spent most of my day in the bathroom with small, frosted windows that are facing west, cleaning it, and therefor didn't really have much sun exposure. As soon as I'm going to leave the house, though, I use a timer to reapply every two hours, in conjunction with long clothing and a sun hat.

Could attest to the lancing of the pimple "eye" for those hydrocolloid patches when it's protuding and easy to access - I used to pop them only at that stage as my face skin tends to get angry with too much squeezing. Now I just leave them alone and use salicylic acid spot treatment if needed. Buuuut wouldn't say no to lancing if it is possible. Disinfecting the area is a must though - I use povidone-iodine (marketed as Betadine here, but there are other brands). I think there are pimple patches that have microdarts in it (I think Dr Jart was it) so that may be an option. Also, Illiyoon makes some nice ato ceramide moisturisers - not too heavy compared to Cerave Moisturising Cream (although Cerave as a hand cream though). Their ceramide ato concentrate cream is also pretty cheap too - around 600PHP for 200 mL of product. (£8-9? Though my source has it locally so minimal shipping costs) Using it as a retinoid buffer and with such a hefty amount, it's pretty economical, plus my sis and mum enjoy it when we do our night routine together haha.

The only thing I've ever used apple cider vinegar and honey for (besides cooking) is a hair mask to dissolve build up and soften my hair. It worked got *me* but I would never tell someone to use it on their face!

Honey is really fine. We use it in the UK on wounds in hospitals to prevent over use of antibiotics. I had honey dressings on a leg wound, 2 weeks honey, 2 weeks silver, repeat. ACV has also shown promise in wound treatment for lowering the bacterial load, its the acetic acid. I would be wary of it on the face but watered down should be ok. DIY isn't my thing personally but many foodstuffs are used medically. Oat baths are still recomended for eczema by doctors. For honey if using on the face I would use a jar only for cosmetic purposes and only dip into it with a spoon that's sat in boiling water or a disposable scoop. I get that commercial products are often better but some ppl don't have access to these products cheaply.

Another thing about using towels, etc. that you wash and dry; Even if the towels you use are clean, the detergent and fabric softener, etc. can be a severe irritant to your face. Skin on your face can react differently to detergent than skin on your body. Towels can also be rough so take a look at what you use when washing your towels. Something you can do immediately to remedy irritation is to not use fabric softener on your towels. Use detergent to clean them and that’s it. Fabric softeners tend to stay in the fabric and can be very heavy with fragrance so your skin may react poorly.

Most basic of basics is just a cleanser, whatever serums you believe would benefit your skin, moisturizer and sunscreen. Plenty of people to explain what actives (in the serums) will do what better than I can, but it depends on your concerns. Then you can add in an exfoliating step once or twice a week, start small and gentle, percentages don't need to be crazy high to be efficient. That's, I believe, the basics? 😅

Limit your actives to one in the evening and one in the morning. I don’t layer a bunch of serums. Night: Balm/oil cleanse, water cleanser, moisturizer, retinol. AM: cream cleanser, vitamin C, moisturizer and/or suncscreen.

Most AHAs and PHAs can help with deodorizing. There is a fairly popular “natural” deodorant from Lume in the US and it uses mandelic acid as its primary ingredient. Works really well, but I also never use it the day I shave - when I forget and do, there is a lot of regret.

I freaking love Lume. Between the exfoliation and how easy it is to completely wash away (no waxy or water-resistant ingredients), it's eliminated HS from my underarms. It's been about 3 years since I had a flare-up in my underarms, so I started using AHAs in other areas and it's been at least a year since the last flare-up anywhere. I had a mild case to begin with, but I'm still seriously impressed.

the popping one is bad because keeping those "sterile" needles in a ziplock bag isnt sterile. u will need to either clean them with alcohol before every use or have them in individual packaging. either way i feel like its unnecessary especially since theres room for error.

re: pimple popping vid not a medical professional, but sister and i both had/have really severe acne and she got a bunch of pimples drained at the dermo's office. i wouldn't try it on cystic acne/acne without a white top, but they use a sterilized single use lancet(the little needle thing the person uses in the video), and they dont puncture straight from the top down, i guess to avoid going too far and damaging healthier skin beneath the pimple? and they went in at more of an angle/from the side. i've read that you can also use diabetic blood sugar testing lancets, as they are also sterile and single use, and come in huge packs that are probably much cheaper with various gauges/thicknesses and lengths. make sure your lancets, whatever brand or type, are within their sterilization expiration dates (yes that is a thing!!!) and also a labeled sharps container is a must too! one of my medications is a sub-cutaneous injection, and i bought a sharps container at my local rite aid where i pick up my meds (walgreens, cvs, other pharmacies, etc should all have them too, they should be with diabetic supplies!) so that it is correctly labeled with like biohazard/sharps warnings labels and all that. when it's filled, i am pretty sure i can take it back to where i got my medications, or to my doctors office and the folks there will be able to properly dispose of it. i'd also probably wash my hands super well, wear single-use gloves, clean the area that will be lanced first with like betadine or an alcohol swab (alc swabs are what i use for the above mentioned medication), and not use cotton pads/wool/balls to clean any drained pus-- that sounds like both asking for infection due to non-sterile packaging and for fibers to get stuck in there, and just general irritation. maybe use like individually packaged sterile gauze pads or non-stick wound pads?

About the chemical exfoliating in the armpits: Sweat doesn't smell, the smell is from bacteria under the arm, chemically exfoliating it will help remove the bacteria, just be sure not to use it too much, since it can damage your skin😊😉

The honey, baking soda and vinegar one is bizarre. Sodium Bicarbonate + Acetic Acid, as any small child who has done the old volcano science experiment can tell you, produces Water, Carbon Dioxide and Sodium Acetate. Sodium acetate has a few uses - we would often add it to bacterial growth media in the lab as a carbon source, and apparently it can make concrete last longer somehow (no idea how that works, that's really not my area, tbh). Sodium diacetate is also the flavouring in salt and vinegar crisps and the substance in those reusable gel heat packs that turn white when you click the metal widget (cool, right?). What any of this is supposed to do to heal your zit, I have no idea😂.

Guys, if you have discoloration under your arms it could be a medical problem. Early stage diabetes, certain metabolic diseases etc can darken the skin under your arm. Always check with a doctor if you dont have a specific reason as to why it got darker, like a slight burn or such.

Idk if I’d trust that smacne thing just because you’re breaking the skin barrier and that opens you up to infection. I do use those micro dart patches with salicylic acid. It breaks the skin barrier too, but not nearly as aggressively as basically a push pin 😅

I've been using the Naturium AHA body wash twice a week since autumn and was able to stop using my deodorant. Tho now that the weather is getting warmer I have started using an antiperspirant again. Highly recommend that body wash

Me too, it is likely from the ph level of the sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) which is the active ingredient. It took months to get the baking soda smell/texture out of some of my clothes as well...

I use acid toners under my armpits too. And as long as I do use this no odor develops. The low pH gives it an environment that will hold back bacteria growth.

The needles are tiny and likely much more sanitary than fingers are, especially if you have long fingernails. I used to use the sterile syringes in my clinical medical assistant practice kits (to pop pimples!).... Now I use tretinoin.😂

if the towels you're using on your face are growing enough bacteria within a few days to cause infection -you need to reevaluate how you're washing your face. if you're having really horrible outbreaks with open skin, sure, use towels once only as a way to help eliminate bacteria until things clear up.

during DIY vibe, amazon wasnt existing yet. Yesstyle wasnt that famous and wasnt reviewed as much as today. Iherb was great but deliveries issues. Aroma zone explosed at this time. Because finding a good product a this time was a real struggle for skin and our wallet. Nowadays, we got access to stabilised and balanced K Beauty product for same price as organic food product. Thanks time has changed :)
