I wish people wouldn't get a pet unless they intended to treat it like family, but there's a big market for pets and it's largely divorced from consideration for the animals themselves. Humans definitely should come first, but if someone is willing to give up their pet then I sincerely wonder how they justify getting one to begin with. It just reeks of disregard for the value of the animal's life. "Entertain me and my kids, then go and die at a shelter for all I care."
