Sensible families aren’t having more children because of the risk of losing mom. Way to go republicans.

My youngest sister was born in 1967 after my mom’s Catholic obstetrician refused to provide the hysterectomy she needed due to fibroid tumors in her uterus. She had three children but he felt she might not be finished with her family. She had a repeated history of domestic violence due to post partum psychosis and with after her third birth had been mentally hospitalized because she feared she would black out and kill her children. Six years later my sister was born tiny and malformed and with a barely controllable seizure disorder. We loved and cared for her at home her entire life. She never could walk, talk, feed herself, toilet herself, put herself to bed, manage her medications, purée her own food so she could swallow it, lift herself in and out of the tub, wash her own hair, turn on the TV, lift her own wheelchair, change her own bed, fix her own snacks or drinks, prepare her own jello water for years after she started to aspirate liquids, to mention just some of the daily tasks associated with complete care of a nonverbal adult with limited ability to move. We would sleep in the hospital with her when she needed overnight care because the staff could not be expected to understand her vocalizations and how to move her so that her constant spasticity didn’t cause her greater pain. She was often so frightened. She needed the comfort and love only family could provide. And we did it. For 56 years. Her care subsumed all our lives. I was 13 when she was born and 69 when she passed. I loved her without reservation. I learned so much from her. And the trauma of her care and her constant, unremitting physical suffering was insurmountable. I love her, and am grateful to have had her in my life. And I despise my mother’s reckless, smug, patriarchal, evil obstetrician, who played God with her and our lives. He should have to suffer what my sister endured for just one day. More than a day’s worth would be morally indefensible. WOMEN HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE THEIR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH CARE.

Some parents may choose to continue a pregnancy and give birth to a severely disabled child. That should be their choice. But a time may come when the parents have passed on and the adult child will be institutionalized. The parents won’t be able to ensure a good quality of life for a helpless adult child.

My child is profoundly disabled, but there were no prenatal tests for his disabilities and it has been the second greatest regret of my life after my awful marriage. Happily divorced from a cheater and abuser, but had to rear my child alone, which was awful. If I could go back in time, I never would have married or ever had a child. Love him more then life itself, but I couldn't cure him and his quality of life and need for 24/7 care is devastating. These protestors and awful right-wingers can go to hade$.

Isn't it awful the way the "Christians" judge? So much for living a Christian life.

I know of at least 5 women close to me that their pregnancy did not go as hoped for and needed termination of their pregnancy. It’s much more common than people think because it’s not discussed, which is sad. We should be comforting each other when something like this happens to our sisters.

This is so heartbreaking. I hope your horrifically difficult decision at least enlightens some people. I truly wish you well.

Mercy is a virtue. Blessed are the merciful. Don’t let anyone ever convince you that what you did was not merciful.

Thanks for sharing your heartbreaking story. This invasion by pro-lifers into one of the most personal areas of a woman's (and partner) lives is so disgusting. No one know what is right for someone else and they need to stop their short-sighted interference.

The mob who shouted at you as went to the clinic WERE NOT Christians. Christ would not have shouted at you, or insulted you.

So, insurance won't cover a D&C, but they'll pay out millio,s of dollars for lifelong, bedridden hospital care.

My twin was born with water on the brain and spina bifida in the early 60’s. He lived a month and it was so painful for my mom that she never told me…I found out by overhearing a conversation. At least we’ve have advances now and sometimes hard decisions have to be made.
