This isn’t an example of medical tourism because my dad’s side of the family was born in Turkey, but when my uncle was diagnosed with cancer back in March, he was told he had to get a procedure done as soon as possible to remove the tumour. Unfortunately where we live (Canada), there’s a wait list and he would have to wait two months for that. So he just booked a flight to Turkey to get it done over there. While the doctors did a good job taking care of him while he underwent surgery, the fact that he had to book a flight to Turkey just to get immediate cancer treatment because wait lists for various medical treatments are climbing higher and higher breaks my heart.

11:30 - There is a huge difference between the prices because due to inflation in Turkey, one dollar is worth 33 Turkish liras. Monthly minimum wage in Turkey is around 450 US dolars. So, 1000 - 2000 $ procedures are affordable for Americans, but impossible for Turks.

One of the things I dislike about this is that in the US hospitals and insurance coordinate to pass along patient health information safely and quickly. As a Turkish citizen, I know that people in my country live under high inflation and big economic difficulties. If you have insurance, healthcare is free in Turkey. BUT, since it is so crowded because of all the refugees from Syria, Afghanistan, Pakistan.. it is impossible to find a place in public hospitals. So, for most of my people, private hospitals are a luxury they can't ever get. It is very sad for me to see Turkey's health system being exploited by countries with stronger economies while its own citizens are experiencing so much difficulty.

Honestly me too. As an American who has considered this because healthcare is NOT affordable or accessible to here and what people here are doing isn't right, but I understand it. In your rude rant, putting the blame on refugees using up public hospitals. Did you ever think that Americans would also like to have a healthcare system that they can use in their own home country instead of getting passports, booking hotels, and flying to another continent to get basic healthcare or even Aesthetics? No, you put it in your mind that it’s a them versus us issue when really it’s an exploitation on all fronts of an issue on peoples’ health. If anything goes wrong; if they’re lucky gets to fly back to try to fix the problem or worse, they have to fix it in the USA, which would be even more because now it’s a corrective issue.

Always ask for an itemized bill because hospitals like to add random charges that were not previously talked about, an extra set of sutures for example because a tech dropped some or there wasn’t enough so the doctor asked for more. Many countries public hospitals have special departments solely for foreign medical tourism. The US doesn’t care if it citizens live or die. Only a small portion of people being underserved by the US healthcare system can afford to go abroad for healthcare. Most disabled/chronically ill people would have to save for years and would still need regular care and medication to manage the condition.

With that first lady, id genuinely question if she needed all those tests, or if it was just an undisclosed ad. Unless you are experiencing health problems, you pretty much just need the normal regular checkup stuff. I think a lot of people take "i need to be proactive about my health" to mean "i need to get every scan i can just in case." This type of thing opens people up to false positives and exploitation by shady people. Getting unnecessary scans also increases your exposure to radiation, amd i feel like my experience of needing more involved healthcare that is actually expensive is getting coopted to convince people they shouldn't even go to their normal physical because "healthcare is expensive in America, you should fly to turkey.

Many US citizens in San Diego are walking across the border for extensive dental care. Yeah, I know, ironic. I saw it on a documentary. Tijuana has a huge med tourism industry. I live in Mexico and the Healthcare I've received has been excellent. I've been able to cut some of meds in half. My Dr's goal is always to make any medications temporary. Also, you don't need prescriptions for medications, so they're actually affordable. Many of my supposed "chronic" problems have disappeared. My doctor does everything, except the check-in stuff, during the visit. It's like I'm the only person there. There are some things that are different from the US, mostly the creature comforts and asthetics, but the medicine is sound and top notch. Of course, just like you would do in the US, you should be an active participant. Ask questions. Be proactive. Say what's on your mind. Advocate for yourself if you need to-something many Americans don't do in the US at all, with horrible consequences.

Legit went to Tijuana for gastric sleeve surgery in May 2015… Canadian citizen, tried to get it done here but the clinic covered by the health care system kept canceling appointments the same day and the clinic was 2 hours away, most times I was already on the way there when they cancelled… besides gallstones from rapidly losing 110 lbs in 9 months there hasn’t been many noticeable side effects. But gallstones are so common with that surgery the hospital I went in Mexico also offered gallbladder removal during the same surgery date… can probably say the surgery saved my life due to how suicidal I was at the time, and it “only” cost about $8000 for the surgery, flights, and hotel stay. Was put on several credit cards and my dads credit card mostly and took 3 years to pay off but still glad I did it

I think just the framing of Americans seeking affordable healthcare with "influencers", "health vacation" and "luxury hospitals" makes it sound automatically bad . HOWEVER, as you said, this is not a new practice. Not just healthcare in Turkey but people travel for cheaper and more expedient access to things like gender affirming surgeries. If we're understanding of that (and hopefully we are), idk why people seeking basic healthcare is any different. A country prioritizing healthcare for tourists over its own citizens, the privileges involved, and the possible flaws in confiding in money-motivated healthcare--even if cheaper--are all its own can of worms but vilifying people who honestly just want access to healthcare is not the way to go.
