to call this "a narcissism thing" is such a lazy (and ableist) cop out... young people learn to define themselves through their surroundings. Back in the day we had subcultures, for example. Today's society is not only more fast paced, there's also a lot of things going on at the same time and constant exposure to all sorts of media that's easily accessible and replaces regular conversation. It's a systemic problem and instead of shaming them maybe we should be helping kids ground themselves and model adequate behaviour for them so they don't get so lost while navigating this.

My Ex is Sicillian American, his dad was a "business man" in NJ and we side eye and cackle at this trend. Ive met the families and seen the women they are emulating. Most women are flashy and always in glam because they had no choice, they were expected to look beautiful and successful as they are a direct reflection of her husband and HIS success. Alot of this trend is rooted in misogyny and violence and its not great to minimize it into a micro trend. Just my 2 pennies.

You could say that about a lot of Black fashion seen in hip hop and rap. I wouldn't assume just because someone dresses that way doesn't mean that they partake in a certain problematic lifestyle or want to actually join a gang. I like wearing 50s fashion, but that doesn't mean I want to be a woman in the 50s that was littered with misogyny and racism. I remember this story (I'm Italian) that made it to the news. This mod guy was a mafia kid, he fell in love with a normal girl, he harassed her DAILY and eventually proposed to her but she didn't want to be in a relationship with this guy (obvously) since she was also in love with another man. Because in italy at the time we had the law of the "matrimonio riparatore" (=the repair marriage) he r@ped this woman and proposed to her. Because of this law, after SA, a woman was forced to marry the guy who r@ped her in order to save face in front of the society of the time and her own family. She absolutely refused and took things to court (what. a. absolute. QUEEN.) and eventually this court case made the law of the "matrimonio riparatore" illegal. I don't remember the name of the girl but she's an absolute italian legend and made history. I wanted to tell this story because maybe another girl went through all of this and became a mob wife against her will. It's absolutely NOT all glitz and glam. This is a serious topic and deserves to be treated seriously.

Whether or not The Godfather has romanticised the mafia is debatable. Yes, the power of gangsters has always facinated people but when you actually watch the movie (or read the book) the lifestyle is actually showing how the characters not only lose themselves the deeper they get into business, but they also lose everyone they love (or have to push them away, either for protection or for liability reasons). So true! That people genuinely think they need to change their entire look due to a trend have no personal style or identity. I understand it more from high schoolers or people in their early 20s who are still experimenting with style, but full grown adult women acting like they need to change their whole look because of a trend is embarrassing.

As an American with an Italian background, and a Chicago resident who after all these years we still hear about Al Capone, which is nothing to boast about, I find it to be insulting to American/Italians and TIKTOK Influencers who like this look are stupid and don’t live in reality.

So they finally moved on from the Chicanas and cholas? People can do their makeup and blah blah blah however they want but they don't want to recognize or respect the hardships that go along with the lifestyles they're mimicking. And that's the issue here. It's offensive because people will hop on trends that imitate people and cultures that are otherwise mocked. We've seen this recently with "Hot Cheeto Girls" "Cholas" "Chongas" and "Guidettes" and I'm sure more but I've been off social media for a while.

Thank you. I don't get why this is big deal. Why is this a feminist cause to stop? White women and others have dressed in gang life out fits. Most black women or men aren't thugs but we dress like that. Most Latinos aren't in gangs but dress like they are. What can you do?...

In regards to the trends being completely different from each other, I've noticed that too. When people were tired of the overly contoured glam looks from 2016, they moved onto more colorful looks with the heavy blush and thick eyeliner. Then they moved onto a pseudo-natural direction with the feather brows and clean girl aesthetic. And I guess people want bold make-up again.

I’m sure being a stripper forced to do certain things because you have no other means to isn’t fun either yet many women dress like them for fun every day. Many women even dress Victorian era like even though the women back didn’t have much rights. Personally I think this is ridiculous to get offended by. Acting like this is a part of their content. I’d understand if it were a certain hate group imagery but this? Come on. I wonder if it’s actually Italians who are offended, or “Italian American”

I think they're still trying to sidestep it, like this could go very quickly and easily into Miami 'cartelcore' for the summer as an 'IroNiC joKe' that they quickly& conveniently forget the 'irony' of. Mobs were created in a time in the US that Italians weren't considered white. Honestly, coming off the jorts and 'androgynous' (not meeting rich Anglo standards of feminitiy) looks of last summer, and Latina ++ glam that turned into clean girl I expect the 'hood' influences will become even less veiled this spring and summer, along w the hidden racism or at least prejudice that comes with the appropriation. It's not about inspiration even when there's a difference between sharing willingly and taking/gentrifying/corrupting the meaning behind.

Not the Stella D’Oro…it was anisette toast. We had pasta and gravy every Sunday. It was started around 7:30/8:00 AM and would simmer on the stove until we got back home from 9:00 AM o’clock Mass. There was stuffed baby calamari, along with homemade pasta for ravioli or lasagna for special occasions. We stayed low keyed back in the 1960’s. There was an uncle who ran numbers but that was years before I was born.
