Greetings All: I have been using Tilda rice for many many years , I recently purchased a small bag of Kohinoor Extra Flavor rice. the Kohinoor cooked up nicely but I found the flavor to be lacking. The next time I buy rice I will be returning to Tilda rice as the nutty flavor is what I prefer in a basmati rice. Thanks for the video.

When I was a child my Mom cooked and prepared rice. I recall a brand Carolina and or whatever was on sale. Mom's rice was mushy , overcooked and best used for spackling ! As a adult I cook and prepare primarily Indian cuisine and use basmati rice. I am inexperienced with cooking other varieties. of rice. Any suggestions or recommendations ? Thanks !

Gajesh 108 if you don't like sticky rice, I would recommend Sona masoori rice available at Indian market. 24 Mantra brand is popular here but pricey because organic. I personally eat lots of rice from Thailand such as Asian best Red Elephant brand jasmine rice, but this is a stickier texture then most Indian rice varieties

Thanks for this comparison. I've been eating Tilda for years my favourite for a long time and can definitely tell the difference if my wife orders any other brands as it does not taste as good. The other day I saw Kohinoor in my local store and decided to get a 1k bag to test but did not expect too much. It's delicious and the rest of the family agree. I will be ordering Kohinoor from now on.

Mexican here, hmm...thanks for telling us non-Basmati people about this yummy rice, I was tending to lean towards the Kohinoor brand but when you stated you personally preferred the taste of the Tilda brand....well, that leaves me only one thing to do, check out what kind of Basmati rice in Costco and other supermarkets and probably guessing the bags at Costco are 10 lb. bags but the packaging is different, its plastic like here with these brands but simulating a brown gunny sack and with a red front with the product name visible at first glance, the Kohinoor brand at 10.99 which is roughly 220 pesos and the Tilda brand at 200 pesos, definitely cheaper in the States, trying to remember the price tag at Costco the 10lb. bag is probably priced at 319 vs. 279 for Thai Jasmine rice vs. 219 pesos for "regular" short grain rice. Thanks for sharing your experience with Basmati rice RPV, liked and trying basmati for the first time. :)

I cook mine in the microwave. 1 cup of rice for 2 cups of warm to hot water and a pinch of salt for flavour. Then 3 to 3.5 minuted on full power (for a 800-1000 watts microwave). Then stir gently. Then 9-8 minutes on half power (400-500 watts) without a lid. Then stir and fluff the rice. If theres still water on the bottom of the bowl add another 1.5 min on half power. If not (it shouldnt for 1 cup) add a lid and let it rest for a couple of minutes. For 2 cups use 3.75 cups of water instead of 4. This is because of the condensation which does not increase over 1 cup and absorbtion of the rice is the same. You may also end up adding time up to 13-14 minutes total for 2 cups of rice. I dont even wash rice as most rice loses a lot of its awesome aromas when you wash it. I uave tested this on a lot of types of basmati.

A good basmati rice should have a distinct aroma when cooking, not all together pleasant, nor unpleasant. I don't believe in pre soaking, but it depends where in the world you are, i.e. export quality vs local [ India / Pakistan ]. I rinse my rice in cold water. Heat oil in a pan, once hot, add a little salt. Add the rice, Gently stir. Add boiling water from the kettle - I automatically know how much water is required because I stick to the same brands. Literally, water should cover the rice up to the first line of your index finger. Immediately as the rice boils, turn down the heat ever so low so the flame is marginal, cover with a tight lid. 8 minutes later, the rice is ready [ Kohinoor ]. I prefer Kohinoor because I like the longer grain and I don't want to buy different varieties of rice for Biryani/Pilao. Once I settled on Kohinoor, I am happily using it for the last 18 months or so.

Thanks for the feedback! I advocate a Whole Foods plant-based diet and do not use oil of any type in my cooking. (it's my personal belief that the skyrocketing rates of diabetes in India are partially attributable to consistent consumption of "ghee" and imprudent use of oil.)

when you age the rice the color get darker, so pure bleached white rice is not aged ,if there is two different color rice is in the bag they mixed the fresh rice with aged one (CHEATING) that here dictate the KHOINUR is aged longer than TILDA! also you can see more different color rice grain in TILDA brand in real life not this video, means they mixed fresh with slightly aged(12 month or less) VS KOHINUR (12-18 month aged) and slightly darker color quality rice is aged in the husk that amount of time (12-18) or best quality ones 24 month and get de husked and processed like INDIA GATE

A fellow rice lover here, thank you so much for this video, it was exactly what I was looking for! I have been contemplating trying the Kohinoor brand but I’m so used to Tilda. I like the look of the long grains of the Kohinoor but interested to know why you preferred the taste of the Tilda to the Kohinoor. Was there a lot of difference in taste between the two brands?
@RedPillVegan7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Great question but difficult answer. Both of these are delicious in my book. Buying the 10 pound bags of rice is quite a commitment, because you’ll be eating on it for some time. So, to try to answer your question, the taste is similar because they are both white basmati rice. Within that frame, there are nuanced differences. One reason I like the Tilda flavor more is bc I *usually* add a few crumbled saffron threads when I cook rice into the cooking liquid before I cook it. I did not do that in this video for either product, so the viewers could see the True Color and I would experience the taste unaltered. I think the Tilda shines more with the saffron, that’s one reason why I like it. The Kohinoor extra long grain rice has a more distinct flavor, which I would attribute in part to the darker color. Tilda, in my book has a more “pure” basmati flavor, hence the name pure original basmati. Both are worth trying. How did you find this video? Do you have any other rice Comparisons you would like to see?
@derenstar7 жыл бұрын
Red Pill Vegan wow, thanks for the response, really helpful! I love saffron in rice, and do a few threads too now and again if I’m doing a special meal. I have tried so many other basmati brands over the years but keep coming back to Tilda because to me it tastes like what I think basmati rice should taste like (the pure taste that perhaps you’re referring to). Then again, I grew up with mum only cooking Tilda so it may be that my palette has been trained to it! Over here in the U.K, Tilda is the most expensive brand, often twice the price of other brands so due to the costs, we tend to buy big (10kg /22lb (?)) to save money. I started doing some research online a while back trying to find other basmati brands that taste like Tilda and came across recommendations for Kohinoor, Daawat, India Gate and Amira brands. I’ve already tried Amira, it was ok but a bit bland to me, compared to the Tilda. I’m struggling to find the other brands but had come across a 10kg bag of the Kohinoor in one of our supermarkets (Tesco). It’s a 10kg bag so will be a huge commitment if we don’t like it-have been there before and it was soul destroying 😁.This led me to searching for comparison videos and how I came across your video.Keep up the good work. Bonus question - have you found any other basmati rice brand that comes close in taste to the Tilda?

I dont want to be rude but brother you dont know how to cook rice and your not doing justice in your comparisons Your technique is wrong you should be cooking in a pot not in an electrical rice cooker This is the reason your rice is dry and sticky Please learn the proper way by watching a real indian cooking rice and you will learn that you need to give rice (dam) which means letting the rice steam for a while at the rnd when all the water has dispersed. You cant cook it the way you cook and expect the rice to come out with its full potential. No real indian would agree with your way of cooking the rice or even agree with your comparisons when u cant even cook the rice properly
