First thing is that tiling over tiles is legit. I went to the Henkel labs and they showed me pull off tests that prove it works better than nearly any other substrate. They use their tile adhesive and it works fine. You can use silicone, I have seen basins stuck with it and they don't come off even when you want them to. Provided the existing tiles are well stuck there is nothing wrong with this method. Would I do it? No because tile adhesive does the same job.

I agree, I tiled over the original tiles in my kitchen with silicone and they have been on over a year and are stuck fast,in fact I made a mistake with one tile and when tried to get it off the next day it was stuck so well I had to smash it to get it off and even then it wasn't easy . By the way one of the main reasons I did it this way is because I managed to get the silicone tubes at a pound each.

Hi, Silicon has always been used to put tile bands up around swimming pools, they don't fall of, mine have been up for 10 years, and when I changed them, it was quite a job to remove them. So well done !!

To all the professional contractors who are outraged by this method, the thing is gutting out even a small bathroom is an expensive venture! And a major commitment! Not to mention the cost of labor if you have to hire someone to come in and do it for you. He’s offering a cheaper quicker option for those of us who do not share your skills or have the means to take on a big job but want to update our bathrooms. I appreciate him showing “ out of the box” ideas! If you think this is so terrible make your own video showing a cheaper and less complex option than gutting the whole thing out. Most people know taking shortcuts result in less than desire results but if you do you know the risks up front

IF U DONT HAVE MONEY TO DO IT THEN YOULL PROBABLY GET ONE 2 EITHER DIPSTICK INSTALLER RIP U OFF OR A QUALITY INSTALLER LIKE I SEE COMMENTING WHO OUTTA KINDNESS OF HIS HEART DOES THE JOB FOR HALF THE PRICE TO MAKE SURE U DONT GET SCREWED....MORAL OF STORY DO UR FRIGGIN HOMEWORK BEFORE U MAKE VIDEO THINKING YOU HAVE MASTERED SUCH N ARTISTIC HARD MANUAL LABORED SKILLED TRADE

You can tile on top of tile. He could of use a primer, ie bal primer and then adhesive and it still would of worked. Also silicon is designed to grab most things. I once done a small splash back at home and used CT1. Still there not budged 4 years later. Also for those who say your losing living space, what 6mm? You can tell he knows what hes doing, look at his joints and cuts. Great work buddy, nice to see someone understands modern building materials and how to use them in the 21st century. Suprised you havnt had someone say use sand and cement then wait 3 weeks to dry then tile. Lol

+Jimjim Skimmer I wonder why this method isn't the industry standard and ANSI approved? I wouldn't be surprised if you start to see signs of failure when it's 10 years old. A bathroom should easily last 30+ years with thin set mortar. I have my doubts about the silicone. It looks nice though, level tiles and no lippage; he is definitely skilled at measuring and makign cuts.

I would like to try this silicone method as long as the surface is cleaned with TSP or a similar product to remove any oily fingerprints or dust and or debris. I would also make sure the previous surface has no voids in it and maybe scarify the previous tile surface. Also silicone doesn't break down. For the people that have thumbs down that's say that this method is just not right.. I would love to hear the reasoning behind it, not just because that's the way they were taught. New things are learned everyday. I've been tiling for 15 years it's definitely a known fact you can tile over tile but I would really like to hear some input on why this method is no good from the" pros" .I try to learn something new everyday and always keep an open ear to new tricks of the trade. Thanks in advance for your input.

So much drama in the comments, people are talking about injuries, collapsing wall or even the building might collapse. He is got more chances to start a 3rd world war then any of those mentioned . I have used silicon to stick back one or two tiles in the past and silicon does the job to be fare and I tell you a fact to all these ''professional builders'' try removing the silicon from bath tube edge and see how easy that is. No tile manufacturer will recommend using silicon because silicon is expensive, because probably they never tested it and possible they might have a contract with adhesive manufacturer, have you ever thought about that ? Tiles will always fall off even you do it with tile adhesive or anything else but the tile adhesive is based on cement and ques what cement cracks and loses the grip/bond

It depends on the home owner's budget and total cost of the job. I imagine this "method" maybe be a litter quicker than mixing thinset and troweling it out, albeit, I am not convinced it is cheaper which. Silicone caulk isn't cheap, I am curious how many tube's of silicone this job took. A 50lb bag of decent thin set is like $15 and gets more coverage. Something to consider is DIYer's might burn out their drill mixing the thinset with a paddle if it's underpowered. Not many homeowners probably have a 1/2" or 5/8" variable drill. Some may find out the hard way and destroy their old drill plus have to buy a new one. So in that regard the silicone might be cheaper. But back to the home owner issue, sometimes if they are not willing to spend the money there's not much you can do. My old boss and I have done a few jobs that you might consider "lazy" but when your getting paid only so much and that is what the home owner decides after giving them several options, it is what it is. I'd prefer to do a better job but I am not willing to work for free. I don't know or have seen any British builders work but I'm sure there are old school tilers who still trowel wet beds of mortar instead of cement board. Just like any contractor, some do good work and some don't. tldr; If it was my house I would be using thinset mortar instead of silicone.

Nah, no legitimate contractor is afraid of losing work. At first glance of this method, I'm concerned that people are covering up a leak or rot......if left to fester, water damage can become costly. Say you have a tile shower that's been in for 10 years and had been leaking, then the eager DIY person comes in and put more tile over the top without inspecting the sub floor or studs. Now another 10 years goes by and the eager DIY person sells their home. Now it's been 20 years of leaking and rotting and the new home owner starts to notice that his shower floor is getting real soft. This scenario can happen around a toilet, tub, shower, or any other place that has the potential to be wet.

However, like Mr.Bugeyes a year ago said, I've tiled using silicon over 22 years ago and the tiles are still perfect, no cracks, movement or leaks. In fact, at the same time, I also made my own shower base out of 26mm hardwood ply and tiled it on a bed of silicon. That shower base is used, daily, by a family of five and it's never leaked. They think they know everything, these "£25 a square metre, mate" men!

Is there any worry of moisture getting through the new grout and subway tiles , and thus mold developing around in any gaps not siliconed on the back of the new tile? Also I think if I do it this way I might I’ll extra cautious and put down a layer of Aqua Defense or similar over the old tiles? I can’t wait to see your update ! Thanks for this video !

Are those 1/8th inch tile spacers you are imbeding in the back of the tile? Judging by your accent I assume you use millimeters. Anyway this method is genius. I always make a mess when troweling on tile adhesive and I must try this. Thanks a million for the great video.

The problem I can see with this method is flexibility. Silicone is a flexible material and as such the tiles will be sitting on a flexible base. If you should wash down the tiles with any applied pressure then the tiles will bounce on the silicone backing which will act like a trampolene, cracking the grouting within the joints. A more solid (inflexible) tile adhesive would be better.

We should never try new things. When we deviate from our past we introduce the potential for a different result and that is very scary. Sticking w older technique of hiring someone to demo it all and start from scratch may cost 10,000.find a way to get the money & you can avoid all the fear of the new stuff.. Just a thought

I like and dont like this video. In his case (supposedly) he had no leaks , no grout that water has crept in creating mildew. I can see someone tilling over a shower that clearly needs repair , slap some silicone and tile over it and good to go......WRONG.

Greetings. Did you prep the existing tiles before gluing the new tiles on? I can't tell from the video but looks like there is a coating of primer on the existing tiles. Thanks.

Good video . At the tile Shop of course they said " NO NO NO !! you can't put tiles on tiles . " I wandered around thinking " Why Not ? " YOU convinced me I was right . There's no reason not to do it . However - I would never have thought of that trick putting spacers behind the tiles . Very good video . Thank You .

I have been waiting for such a procedure for some time now . . . At Last! This may be the lazy way out but it's certainly worth elevating the mess of removing old tiles. Is it possible to do this on kitchen or bathroom counter tops? I even thought about painting the miserable things as seen on another tutorial. So happy I waited. Look forward to hearing from you so that we can get started . . .Thanks so much for sharing this with us!

this is not the proper way but some home owners cannot afford a full remodeling or simply don't want to spend money contractors know what I'm talking about so give them what the want with no warranty have them sign contract with details of installation before you start and make that couple buck's
