The eye contact thing is the weirdest part to me. Asking an ump to judge eye contact is going to create issues.

I feel like at this point there needs to be a space between when the batter is required to be set and when the pitcher is allowed to begin his windup, because otherwise there's no way for the ump to judge this consistently.

From what I understand eye contact is one of the cues but they also have to take into account if the batter is set and Anderson was clearly not set at all before Webb began his motion. It's actually a rule and should have resulted in a ball instead.

I think this would all be solved if the ump simply held a hand up to hold until he saw the batter was set and then it was ok to pitch. Then it would be simple to see who was milking the clock as well.

Part of being ready though is focusing your eyes on the pitcher/ball. So by putting “look at the pitcher” as a signal you are ready for the pitch you could be handicapping the batter. He is looking down at an object close to him- then he looks up, his eyes are adjusting to looking at an object far away from him and WOAH HERE COMES THE PITCH! As someone else said- it should be “batter has to be set by 12 seconds remaining- pitcher can’t pitch until 8 seconds remaining. Or something like that. Also- if the batter called time- the pitcher shouldn’t be allowed to pitch until the ump resumes the game…. Which he shouldn’t do until the batter says go. Wtf is that. Imagine if the defense calls time out in football and then, without warning and without a specific amount of time lapsing, the offense just runs a play. Wtf.
@blizzfreak245

I honestly thought after the first twirl, the batter was getting both hands on the bat and set. I bet Webb thought so too. Then he decided to twirl the bat a 2nd time when Webb was already pitching. Honestly batters have such a routine for spending like 19 seconds to twirl the bat, adjust feet, shuffle anything could be considered as " not set"

Exactly. They're mad at the pitcher for pitching "too quickly" but if he waits too long because the batter has to wiggle around like he has ants in his pants every at bat, then he gets penalized for it. Also, that pitch was delivered well after he'd stepped out. If he had time to step out, he had time to swing at it.

The rule isn't for the batter and pitcher to "nod to each other". Anderson turned his head towards the pitcher, and just because he then quit his motion after that, Webb had already started his pitching motion because Anderson was looking at him. A batter looking at a pitcher is the only gauge the ump truly has.

Should be if the batter has used their 1 TO once back in the box they should get set. If they step out of the box (aside from a throw that would cause injury) it's an automatic out with a warning to the batter for their next at bat during that game. If repeated then ( of course automatic out ) plus ejection. Hurt feelings should never play a part in baseball.

The biggest part of the rule they seem to be emphasizing is the eye contact. If we’re going based on eye contact then Webb was more than okay to start when he did and the umpire was right. I don’t necessarily think that should be the way we interpret the rule. Right now as a batter I wouldn’t make eye contact until I’m pretty much set or coming into my set solely bases]d on how much of the conversation of the rule is centered around eye contact.

@@josephsimmons9241 I strongly encourage you to avoid the TV and read a book. I know that is difficult for people now. I know even a book is often biased and inaccurate but developing better judgement of content quality has been pretty much a past skill of mental processes. Or you could learn a new skill or hobby instead of operating a remote device because history and laziness and health decided it's too hard to get up and switch channels between various liars, crappy shows and things three networks are sponsored to show by corporations or Hollywood. Imagine those old lazy farmers sitting on their wooden porches all winter and fall, waiting for a couple weeks to plant seeds. Imagine the good ole rocking chair getting a work out while farmer Smith waited for spring rains. Or waiting for months for mother nature to grow his crops. Then finally his community gets together and they all show up to harvest his field, the next farm fields, etc. Ten months of sitting and two months of real work. A hard life. But now it's better. We can save walking and drive to the food store instead of out on a farm to pick vegetables, gather eggs, slaughter a pod or chicken. We can finger a remote or talk to anyone, anywhere, anytime with a few touches and even see them. No more hitching the mule to a wagon to ride into town to visit the general store or send a telegram. We've come a long way towards laziness and ease. Finally, imagine how great it will be to spread this attitude through out the solar system. I'm not saying we should go back in time. Perhaps if you look at single at bats in isolation. But at the end of the day Pitchers are doing a lot more work than batters/fielders & condensing the amount of time in which they have to put in that work makes Pitching a lot harder. You’re going to see a lot fewer guys throwing 100+ pitches & going late into games down the stretch. It’s worse for Pitchers than batters & the increase in runs early in the season & Spring training shows that.

Tim backing out of the box as an ump I'd assume he's trying to call another timeout which he cant. They still need to work this new rule out more. At this point they might as well give the batter 10 seconds to get ready and then the pitcher 10 seconds. So if the batter isn't ready by the 10 second mark, too bad.

The second pitch began right at the end of the "hip thrust thing" about a full second before the leg came up. You count the one pitch from the left foot movement and the second from the leg lift. There was maybe a third of a second difference on timing between the batter and pitch in the two examples. Also, how is an umpire supposed to define a batter being set and a pitcher beginning a pitch when you are putting things in slow motion to determine exactly when a pitcher "starts" movement and a batter's bat is completely raised.

This is why cricket is much better at "getting set" than baseball. Usually the bowler / pitcher has a massive run up towards the wicket where they bowl (about 20m). In that time the batsman can get set at his wicket to be ready once the ball is delivered. Even for spin bowlers who spin slower balls and approach the wicket sloeer (like curveballs) have a run up of about 5m for batters to be set. It makes it way easier everyone to be ready and have consistent rate of overs (sets of pitches)

When you watch it the first time at normal speed it looks like Anderson is the one playing games with the way he steps away from the plate. So I get why the umpire called it the way he did. They need to come up with a better rule than the 'eye contact' thing though. Like the batter has to be set for a full second or something.

There's nothing wrong with the new rule. Guys like you can't understand that hitters AND pitchers are no longer allowed to stall.
@zkeletonz001

@@colderbeer So the ump is supposed to know when they've made 'eye contact' even when he can't see the batter's face? They need something that's more concrete and doesn't rely on the ump having to makes guesses and judgement calls. And this aspect isn't about stalling it's about pitchers going too early. If you don't realize that then I think you're the one who doesn't understand what's happening here.

@@zkeletonz001it’s pretty reasonable to see the batters head come level and rotate towards the pitcher, then count 1 Mississippi to assume they have made eye contact.

Tim Anderson is looking at Webb, a fair game. Already used his timeout, he clearly looks in Webb's direction.

If the batter is in the batter’s box, he better be ready to go. The Umpire was making eye contact with the pitcher, so the batter better be too. An NFL Quarterback doesn’t wait until the defense “feels” like they’re ready.

instead of ey contact if should say "batter must be in "ready" position with in the time limit. A ready position means that there are two hands on the bat and it is behind the batter's head."

Anderson is also in the wrong for jawing the pitcher for the K, and calling him a soft mofo. He should have shushed him, the move Anderson does when he hits a HR.

The pitch clock is a terrible new rule to baseball. Way too much grey area, how do you judge that both players made eye contact
@freedbygsus
@freedbygsus Жыл бұрын
Eye contact is just supposed to be one of the many possible cues a pitcher is supposed to use to know a batter is ready. The umpire's job isn't to look for eye contact, but to see if the pitcher is rushing/quick pitching the batter. Webb was already set while Anderson was still walking to the plate, so there's no excuse for the umpire not calling Webb for quick pitching.

Pitchers gotta wait for the batter to get set and make eye contact, but their pitch clock is still ticking down. They have to really adjust this so that people can't play around with the clock.
