I was at Apple headquarters in Cupertino, CA for Global Accessibility Awareness Day for a panel when Apple CEO Tim Cook agreed to down with me (and other disabled activists) to have a chat. We talked about new Apple products like the Apple watch and how Apple products helped me as a disabled content creator.

OMG Rikki! Other than the fact that you, James, and Tatiana got to talk with THE Tim Cook, it's awesome that Apple is even caring about accessibility. The company gets a lotta crap from people who complain about the overpricing and things like that, but it's really cool to see them work on accessibility without even expecting a return on that investment. Awesome how you were able to get into that tho!!! Nice job gurl! Spread dat awarenessss!!! ヽ(・∀・)ノ

That's even more mindblowing. Apple has specialists and directors in accessibility engineering that could have spoken on the topic, but bringing in the CEO is a whole other level.

One thing that people don't realize is for me to buy an iPad instead of a communication system is night and day. I can buy a high end iPad for $800. A communication system can be $6,000 or more,. It does a quarter of what an iPad can do. You can''t compare.

I'm hard of hearing and I'm wondering has anyone found a way of adding cc to apps like Snapchat and Instagram? It's getting frustrating that it's been this long and there is still zero sign of them adding it. Absolutely love how great Apple is with hearing aid accessibility and just accessibility period! firstly: great video and it's really awesome you got this opportunity! i would like to say that I don't want to hate on the video, but I do have to say that a lot of other technical companies make their products accessible. it's great that Apple is one of them, but to say the products are 'for everyone' but you have to save up 2 to 3 monthly salaries to afford one? that's not right.

Tim Cook mentioned technology in the view of things that could change in your life. Like you won’t always be fit and healthy and you may need to use it in a different situation. Accessibility is for everyone. We think we may never need it but its there for us when we do. That’s also true for hearing and deaf people. The point of technology is to make life manageable and easier for every one. Its not an us vs them thing; being able to do things we all need and want to do and to also enjoy them affect us all - its a human issue.

Perfect! Talking accessibility. So when can we see an ASL based Apple support line for those of us that are deaf? There would be less confusion if we spoke directly with the tech and not thru the interpreter. Tech issues are difficult to interpret for and can be confusing. So a direct line to techs that use ASL in a FaceTime type of setting would be ideal.

I have had some of the worst accessibility experiences at the Apple store!! It disappoints me so much because my iPhone is my favorite accessibility tool, it controls my hearing aids' volume and programs, flashes for alerts, allows me to type back and forth in my notes to communicate with people who don't sign, and I use an app that translates speech into text for me to read. I go to the Apple store when my accessibility tool is broken. My lifeline is taken away from me and I'm scared, obviously! I've had Apple employees refuse to slow down, look at me or speak up; refuse to communicate by text; insist I need to make a voice call to get access to my phone; and worst of all - I once waited (AFTER being called back to the store by the "We're ready for you now!" text ) for well over an hour to be served. It was getting close to closing time so I approached an employee and attempted to figure out what was going on. The employee informed me they'd called out my name and I hadn't responded so they'd bumped me from the queue without telling me. If they already have my phone number and can send automated texts, why wouldn't I be texted when bumped from the queue?! To top it all off, their "accessibility concerns" email was shut down for a very long time. The manager of the store suggested I PHONE THEM to talk about my issue. Jfc.

Adiță Crafterul you never stop being deaf even if you have hearing aids or CI (cochlear implant) you still are deaf, you can't change hearing loss just like blindness, they need a stick thingy or dog to help them to get to the thing they want to go but that doesn't fix their blindness, does it?
@xFictionAficionadax
@xFictionAficionadax 7 жыл бұрын
Adiță Crafterul I'm guessing she's prob thinking of those "xxx person hears for the first time!" vids showing late-deafened people getting access to CI, which has mixed results of course, but most people don't know that. They see a video and think "omg they're hearing again!"

I find it interesting Tim Cooks says "Accessibility is a basic human rights", "We want everyone to have access to our products". Sorry Tim, we don't all make 7 figure salaries. Especially I love "we don't make things and look at return on investment". Right, it's why Apple products are so overly priced and main tech inside is always behind industry standard (core CPU).

teddybkk you can buy the 2017 iPad for $300 and something. It's pricey but you get bang for the buck. They have the iPhone SE that retails $400 but you can get in installments WITH budget smart phone plans. You can buy refurbished Macs with full warranties. There's so many options if you're on a budget..

If you think you need to be a millionaire to purchase Apple products, then your bias against them has influenced your ability to think rationally. Apple products are costly, but they aren’t so much so that they break the bank. Just like anything else on the market, if you want it, just save up for it. Reconsider what bills you have; which ones are necessities to have such as rent or internet, and which ones can be cut back, such as services that require monthly fees? What do you overspend on with your extra money, and what can you further budget - such as buying coffee or lunch every day or instead of preparing it at home? I don’t get paid a huge amount, but it’s fairly good for my age - about $13 an hour at 24 years old. My wife makes about the same - maybe just a little less. Yes, we do have plenty of adult bills - rent, utilities, phone bill, cable/internet, car loans/insurance, credit cards, etc. - she is in the Apple ecosystem, as well. We both appreciate the values and quality behind Apple’s products, so we make it work despite knowing there are more affordable options. Even before we had a joint income, I was funding or saving for my own Apple products. It can be hard, but it’s definitely doable to own Apple products so long as you aren’t living off government money and have a stable income - even minimum wage. Depending on the circumstance, Apple offers payment plans. Many colleges offer MacBooks for school work at a discount; and Apple also provides student discounts in some cases. You can set up a payment plan along with a cellular data plan for an iPad at your carrier - put like $150 down, get an iPad that day with a data plan, and pay an extra $40 a month (more or less depending on model of iPad, carrier, and chosen data plan) on your phone bill which compensates as paying off the rest of the iPad’s cost, as well payment for your data; also allowing the freedom to use the iPad for internet use on the move. As for iPhone - carriers as well as Apple offer yearly upgrade plans that are similar to the iPad example given above - you won’t have to pay full price for an iPhone. As for me, I inherited my dad’s iPhone 3GS years back on a 2-year contract; I’ve been upgrading to new iPhones every 2 years since and I only ever pay $300 tops for each new phone - never had to pay the full price tag which is considerably more. Keep on the lookout for in-store or online discounts for Apple products - in some cases, you can save a couple hundred bucks. Ask for an Apple product as a birthday or holiday gift if saving is difficult for you; but also know that saving for it makes the purchase much sweeter on your end. TL;DR? - Apple products are affordable. You just need to look for options to make buying them easier on your income. Instead, you are choosing to be dramatic and not open to the reality that there are options and ways to own Apple without paying the top dollar.
