Tim Curry was the toast of Broadway at this time. Having his Broadway debut, playing the title role, in Peter Shaffer's play Amadeus. He was nominated for Tony in 1981 for Best Actor, but lost to his fellow costar Ian McKellen , who played the tortured Salieri.

@@lilliehalumi8770 Well, we all have our subjective ideals as to what constitutes "legend" status. I'm a huge, huge fan of Tim Curry. I think he's extremely talented, a highly overlooked. He's worked so much in the industry. But, there's no denying that Eddie Murphy has a net worth that is probably 10 times that of Tim Curry. I think Eddie is very funny, and also a versatile actor/comedian. I'd rather meet Tim, but Eddie is definitely the bigger star.

This honestly a BRILLIANT indictment of racism in entertainment overall and the lack of representation on SNL specifically. They had Garrett Morris at first but until Eddie Murphy showed up (to save the damn show honestly) they never really knew what to do with a person of color in the cast which was a shame. You know that Eddie probably wrote much of this piece and they used stereotypes to perfect effect.
@jamiew81353 жыл бұрын
I had no idea who Tim Curry was until today. I am amazed at the brilliant sketch went. Saturday Night Live has been on for a long time. Oh No Mr Bill... I stopped watching SNL for a few reasons. It stopped being funny. I remember Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Chris Farley,.. I am blown away by the talent. I have always appreciated the brilliance of Eddie Murphy. Having to make a hamburger bun out of white bread... LOL. The struggle is real. My mom was amazing. She was also the won who was really in charge of the budget. She was strict about finances and she was no joke. I went to great lengths to beg her to buy stuff that would basically make MY LIFE easier. I wanted McDonalds as often as possible. I demanded hotdogs for dinner when I didn’t want to eat what she made. I am mortified that I got away with that as a kid. Adulting blows. I was so excited to see this clip, laugh out loud and be grateful that this season in life is challenging but it will get better. Incidentally I heard the remake of Biko with Peter Gabriel and The change project. Another opportunity to see how we can make better choices moving forward. God willing.

I know. Garrett was usually in drag or singing opera. And that was usually all they had him do. Although he did have his chance to shine such as that weekend update when he asked Mick Jagger "Where are all these black women?". Referring to the Stones song where Mick sang about how "Black girls just wanna get f***** all night!"
@snager803 жыл бұрын
Did they ever do a flash Gordon or star trek or twilight zone parody or were black sci Fi action stars not a thing yet
@GhostnisanArt Жыл бұрын
@snager80 you know, The Twilight Zone was created as a social commentary to combat racism and highlight Jim Crow Laws. Rod Sterling was stopped by the network from overtly writing about it so many of the episodes were about morality in how we should treat one another but not outright about the evils of racism. Also, because of censorship, black people weren't allowed on television so, even though Rod created it to highlight the injustices against blacks, it wasn't viewed that way by mainstream standards. So, I find your comment to be very....confusing

When we could still laugh at ourselves
@chrismanuel97685 ай бұрын
This entire piece was actually an indictment of the racist superiors that refused to let black actors play parts that weren't specified to be "black" roles and how black actors are only allowed to play thugs, mamis, slaves, and prisoners. Watch it again. This wasn't "laughing at ourselves". This was scathing satire about how the black man is treated as an inferior person in Hollywood and comparing it to crossdressing, transgenderism, and "white only" families

I don't know about that. I think if they got back to that, it would really boost them. I will *never* forget the "Word Association Test" sketch with Chevy Chase and Richard Pryor!
