Tim Harrell Big Cypress National Preserve Trail Camera Pickup

8 months of trail camera action from Big Cypress National Preserve in southwest Florida. I put this trail camera in January of 2022. I've made 4 trail camera pickup videos from this spot and it was becoming my favorite spot. I never saw a human at this spot so I felt the camera was safe. I did not expect a bear to destroy the camera. This was my second camera to be destroyed by a bear this summer. At least I got some good footage. I'll get another camera and put it back at that spot for sure!

Sorry about your camera. I have a pair of cubs that won't leave mine alone right now. I even moved it a little ways away and they found it again. They haven't destroyed it yet but it is like they are drawn to it when they and Mama are anywhere around. About a year ago I put up a fence post by a water hole and I thought I had lost the whole thing. Figured it was a human stole it. Then I was wandering around a hundred feet or so away in the tall grass and found it. Other than one tooth mark in it, it was fine. I guess a bear just wanted to take it home but then got bored with it.

I wounder what the attraction is for the bears ? If that is ever answered it's a good starting point or place. The other thought , wrap a portion of a electric fence around the tree below the camera and have the batteries for it solar charged. Might say it would be shocked Bear that checks out the camera. I have a suggestion on how to possibly minimize the bear damage. Put on some rubber gloves and wipe down the camera at home with alcohol wipes. Then constantly handle the camera with gloves on. If you touch it with your bare hands, wipe it down again. Or, just wipe down the camera after you mount it. And see if it helps.

I am still amazed at how many bear and cougar shots you get. I live in WA St and run 7 cams on Mt St Helen's year around and have never filmed one mntn lion...which is a good thing😅... and only bears in the spring. Everything else except Bigfoot. Thanks again and Merry Xmas.Big browning cam fan.👍

I'm wondering if you had something on your hands that had a scent that they went for. Other than that one bear was getting his chewing in on the tree too. I know you like to come back and check very easily on the camera but I had for my Browning the metal case that goes over the top and protects it and that would protect your camera. You would just have to untie it from the tree to open it up because the straps go through or using a solid locking key with the cabling that comes with them. It would be all solid stuff that they couldn't chew through and you wouldn't lose cameras that way.

I think a bead of ammonia applied with a cotton swab around the edges of the camera should deter the bears without smelling up the whole area.

I have the same browning cameras, here in NC it's a necessity to have them in a metal security box. The bears here will rip them off a tree within days and chew the camera to pieces if not.

I hope these videos aren't being used for hunters purposes. I enjoy watching other animals in their natural areas which is where we all like to enjoy and live in as much peace as possible.
