Environmental scientist and polar adventurer Tim Jarvis has summited mountains and crossed deserts. A few years ago he became determined to recreate a particular journey.
Inspired by the heroic exploits of an Anglo-Irish explorer named Ernest Shackleton a century before, he began a 15 year quest to follow in his footsteps.
Shackleton's 1914-17 quest to cross Antarctica from sea to sea was plagued with terrible obstacles including pack ice crushing his ship, a herculean journey by lifeboat, and impossibly inadequate mountaineering equipment.
Although Shackleton never reached his goal, and died heavily in debt at the age of 47, he is now held up by many as a role model for leadership in extreme circumstances.
