Tim ended his set in Auckland last month with this, lights off, audience singing the chorus, tears streaming down my face. Beautiful. Just beautiful.

We saw him do this last night. He had the stage lights off, so we could only hear his amazing rendition of Hallelujah. Tim got the audience to do the chorus while he sang the verse. It was so very emotional.

A beautiful interpretation of a beautiful song. Well done, Tim! As I see it, this is not a "religious" song, it's a song about a lost love. Maybe you need to have experienced a love that was miraculous but miraculously broken to understand Cohen's lyrics. But to each their own. I've seen many a songwriter comment on that once their songs are 'out there,' they cease to be *their* songs and become owned by each person who hears it and uniquely interprets it.

A pianist, and a decent voice. Oh, and intelligent. And a comedian. Why is there a seemingly endless stream of money for wanna-be football players, but not as much for at least a few more Tim Minchins? A bit of a rhetorical question, but after watching an endless stream of cooking shows for the last few years, where are the new Tim Minchins?

Guto Luz I agree that this version of this song is not particularly religious, but there are people all over this thread moaning that Minchin has betrayed his anti-religion stance by singing it.
@GutoLuz
@GutoLuz 10 жыл бұрын
Kristen Dunn This version is basically the same that Cohen and everyone else sings. Anyone saying this song is religious can’t understand the English language, metaphor or irony. (Btw, I’m Brazilian). "Maybe there's a god above". Maybe? What kind of religious mind would say that? Minchin is extremely bright and of course he UNDERSTANDS what this song really means. If Hallelujah was a religious song it would be banal. (Btw, they made a Portuguese version with religious content that’s exactly that). The harmonic structure and the melody of this song are simple. The true power and beauty of it are in the lyrics. Cohen is brilliant exploring the tension between the context (the religious themes) and the content (the turmoil of emotions caused by passion, lust and love). It’s irony all the way long: “You saw her bathing on the roof / Her beauty, and the moonlight overthrew you (…) and from your lips she drew the Hallelujah!”; “Love (…) is a cold and broken hallelujah”, etc. How can people not realize that?

Totally ok with biblical references as a part of our cultural heritage and expression of art. Doesn't mean that there's a god, just like there doesn't mean that there's any of the other gods made up by man during the ages. But it still makes up a part of our history and is good material for artistic expression.

For what it is worth, I am one atheist who loves this song... all the various versions of it. Although I am partial to the John Cale version. The lyrics are not textbook religious : "Maybe there’s a God above But all I’ve ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you It’s not a cry you can hear at night It’s not somebody who has seen the light It’s a cold and it’s a broken Hallelujah ... I'll stand before the Lord of Song With nothing on my tongue but Hallelujah"

@NYCAustinNYC Ditto many years later. I also like Ludacris, Winans Gospel and many artists singing in languages of which I’m not fluent. I happily listen, love and even sing with them and I don’t feel a bit of anxiety over whether the lyrics are my thoughts or opinions. I don’t sing in public but I doubt it would stop me. Why not make people happy doing what makes you happy, right? Beats the crap out of analyzing and judging people (in the name of Christianity no less!) peace friend

You don't need to have a problem with it now. This is not a religious song. It's about love - found love, lost love, and the almost spiritual nature of physical intimacy. I think Cohen drew a metaphorical parallel between religious epiphany and human intimacy, specifically the exclamation and release of orgasm. There is a degree of worship of each other in sex. Some may disagree with me on these points (which is ok with me) but the song is certainly about love (and sex) and not about religion.

I never understood why people think this is a song about God or anything...it does have Christian symbolism, but if you listen to it, or freaking read the lyrics, you can see that it isn't. It's a song about love, a failed one as far as I can tell. "love is not a victory march, it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah". How's that praising a deity? :)) "do you remember when I moved in you [...] and every breath you drew was Hallelujah". It's a song about lost love.

I wonder how many of them also consider Reggae Songs that contain 'Praise Jah' or other similar translations to be Christian Songs. I guess you are right that people hear what they want to hear. As a former orthodox jew, I hear a lot of bitter irony in the song, the english lyrics contrast with the transliteration of hebrew. Praise God as the Chorus of a song about uncertainty and troubled love. Of course, it can also be seen almost as a prequel to the song of solomon.

I don't love Tim Minchin, so I guess I saw this performance for what it is - doodling on the piano, and still trying to work out how to perform this song. On the other hand, Brenda Dos Santos has not only worked out how to perform this song, she's realised the courage it takes to own it. And she does that here, without an ounce of our celebrity worship to gloss it up. It's world class. Hit Ricardo Bruno's post of Brenda dos Santos - Hallelujah in the youtube search box.
