Don't be that hard on yourself Alice. Just because your vocabulary isn't as huge as Tim's, doesn't mean you aren't smart. We can get by with a very limited number of words, but I always think it's good day when I have to look up a word I don't understand. Once in a while I actually remember it for later, and a day when you learned something at least isn't totally wasted. Just a large vocabulary doesn't make you clever or cultural in itself. It is said that even a dumbed down issue of a newspaper uses more than 5000 different words in it and most people can interpret that over a couple of mugs of coffee. Shakespeare on the other hand only used a total of around 20000 different words for his entire works. Language evolves so fast these days that we are bombarded with new words almost daily that we have to learn. It's no wonder we don't sound as "clever" as someone using it just a hundred years ago. But perhaps I'm only saying this because I'm struggling with English myself? ;)

Whilst it may manifestly transpire that the utilization of an overly abundant and esoteric lexicon and intricate and labyrinthine grammatical constructions connotes the exhibition of one's scholastic aptitude and consummate expertise in the domain of verbal communication, it indubitably possesses the innate potentiality to obscure, impede, and frustrate the genuine intention and purport of the message being conveyed, thereby evincing the unequivocal necessity to scrupulously exercise prudence and deliberation in the deployment of a more simplified, straightforward vocabulary and grammatical structure that facilitates optimal ease and effectiveness of communication. They work well together. The placebo effect exists...scientifically & intertwined is where the woo-woo happens. For me, it's a softer, kinder way to live. Monotheistic doctrines are the beliefs of religions who think there is only one 'God'. The 'Abrahamic religions' (Judaism, Christian, Islam) are monotheistic and all believe in the one (and same) 'God'. .
@IceMetalPunk2 жыл бұрын
You should have put "same" in quotes. Because although they all claim to believe in the same god, anyone who knows even the slightest bit about the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Qu'ran, would say their gods are three very different characters. They're like Toby Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and Tom Holland, if their difference was less about age and specific powers, and more about how psychopathic they are.
@pastafarians2 жыл бұрын
@@IceMetalPunk still the 'same' 'God' though. The Old Testament, the basis of Judaism, is a major part of Christianity and although Jesus is considered a side character in Islam it still stems from the Old Testament. Absolutely they are vastly different ways of interpreting it, but it stems from that one concept of the monotheism of the 'God' of the Old Testament.
@IceMetalPunk2 жыл бұрын
@@pastafarians Oh, I understand that. But though they stem from the same myths, they're greatly diverged from each other in terms of characterization. In the same way that this same god himself derives from the god of war in the older Canaanite pantheon, but yet is still quite a different character. (The older Canaanite version of Yaweh is most like the Jewish version, which makes sense since it's the first to develop out of the Canaanite religion, but he was still quite different.) Or, for a more modern comparison, it's like how Miles Morales is technically derived from Peter Parker's Spider-Man, but is clearly a very different character despite the similarities they may have.
@pastafarians2 жыл бұрын
@@IceMetalPunk I do not disagree with your analysis. I find the Abrahamic religions fascinating in their instance of there only being one 'God' when the prior stories it is derived from had many 'Gods' and an array of demi-gods. Most creation stories that I am aware of (and I freely admit I don't know them all) have many characters. Something like Hinduism has a 'main' 'God' who created everything but then other shit (like maintenance) is packaged out to other 'Gods' creating a pantheism. Christianity split it into three, but they are all the same dude, somehow, to maintain their monotheism. It's all strange but yet very interesting.
@IceMetalPunk2 жыл бұрын
@@pastafarians Yep! And to me, the origins of the Abrahamic religions are extremely interesting, because you can trace bits and pieces through history into the modern scriptures (or at least the Old/New Testament, which I'm more familiar with than the Qur'an), and see how people stopped believing the old things and moved onto believing the new ones, while still insisting that their beliefs are based on infallible and unchanging deities somehow. In the original Canaanite pantheon, Yaweh was the god of war (and patron god of Israel -- which I speculate, though with no evidence at all, might have happened after they won some battles against outsiders and attributed that to his help). He was one of 70 different brother-gods, who were born of the creator god El and his wife Asherah, goddess of fertility. Despite the fact that over time, Israelites began to reject the pantheon and shift to monotheism by claiming that El and Yaweh are two names for the same god, there are still more elements of this pantheon origin that remain to this day in the Bible. For instance, not only are El and Yaweh used as names for their God, but also Elohim -- which is plural. It can loosely be translated to "gods of El", referring to the pantheon, but believers these days will say it must be the Royal We and still only refer to El/Yaweh. Then there are the references that personify orchards, which make more sense when you learn that Asherah, as the goddess of fertility, was closely associated with orchards, and those stories were originally about her before she was removed from them (to the point of explicit commandments barring any acknowledgment of Asherah's existence). And then there's my favorite pantheistic remnant in the Bible: there's a Biblical story where El is talking to Elohim, he divides the world's population into 70 groups, and he assigns Yaweh to watch over Israel -- and we don't hear about the other 69 groups again. Which, in the modern Bible, effectively works out to "God was talking to himself, split the world into 70 bits, made himself the patron of Israel, and never spoke of the other 69 groups again." Which makes very little sense. In actuality, the original myth that story stems from was El dividing the the population up for his 70 sons, and assigning one of those sons -- the war god Yaweh -- to preside over Israel. Makes a lot more sense.

I have a couple of friends who are staunch religious nuts because the want to believe that being so will get them into the after life where they will live forever. Isn’t that being selfish and make them ineligible? I also had a friend who believed that all of science is wrong and the only answer you need is god. This happened because she had cancer and was going through a really tough time with chemo and such. She was persuaded to attend a church group who prayed for her and she got better. It was a miracle, god cured her cancer. The efforts of chemists, doctors and the power of modern medicine had nothing to do with it, they are rubbish. Got filled her with love and light and cured her so she owes him her devotion. I don’t understand their thinking.

Monotheism is a God system in which there is a a The-God a specific 'being' - and only one of them. Deism is where there is no specific god-being, but something 'spiritual or powerful' that fills that same ecological niche of "gap filling". Pantheism is where there are many Gods each associated with specific areas of interest (such as life, death, evil, crops, storms and seas, thunder, volcanos etc).. Christianity is unique among mono-theistic religions in having a trinity of gods in (at least) four parts, with unique areas of interest including "foreskins", "Good", "sins", "Evil", and shipbuilding and zookeeping - also a generalised interest in genocide and the murder of boy children and the enslavement of virgin girls. But "It's Complicated", and in order to forgive sin (which being all powerful he/they can do) it was necessary to torture himself/otherkin on a cross and then to continue to enforce punishment of sin if you are unconvinced by the lies pedalled by your local confidence trickster in his/their name for the enrichment of that 'spiritual leader'.
