I agree, Witherspoon was grossly underatted.. I remember reading that Big George turned down a comeback fight with Witherspoon.. Too much risk without the reward.. Witherspoon was a damn good heavyweight.. On the right night he could hang with any heavyweight.

When they talk of the great punches of heavyweight history. The Witherspoon overhand-right belongs there. I still say he was the second-greatest heavyweight after Holmes in that roughly decade-long stretch between the eras of Ali and Tyson. And he missed out at being the best in a razor thin split decision loss to Holmes in '83.

Yes, it was a triple-header heavyweight special on HBO. The next fight was an EPIC bout between Lewis and Mercer. I don't like draws in boxing (who does?) but I would have had to call it one because that fight had no "loser". The last fight was a big letdown between Holyfield and Czyz that had to get called early because of some substance that got Czyz's eyes and they stopped it after 5. Holyfield looked anything but impressive before the stoppage, and with his next fight being against Tyson a lot of people thought he was well past it and headed for big trouble.

Gonzalez especially in round five looks more as a heavy bag for practice than a fighter.

Too bad Witherspoon had money problems with Don King. It would have been nice to see what kind of a run he would have had if he stayed focused and in shape. Managerial problems have derailed many a boxing career.
