I got a new 2015 KLR 650 leftover in February of 2017. I watched a lot of your vids and others before my purchase and made a lot of your mods before even starting the bike. I had small trail bikes as a kid and also had 4 different road bikes including a couple of Harley's. It had been 24 years since my last motorbike I'm now 55. I love my KLR I put on 8000 KM last summer with 60% road and 40% off road ATV trails. I always look forward to your next video. Just found this type of canister people are using - thinking about getting one or two. I've heard people say there's a certain brand that can fit a 32 ounce backup fuel bottle. My question is - does the tube get hot when leaving it out like everything else? Would you recommend drilling a hole in one to keep air flow?

At the lowest point you better off having a small hole to let condensation out .. especially if you are holding tools

I have the same setup on my KLR but put my MSR fuel canister in it. Fits perfect and I use it to power my camp stove or as a back up if I ever run out of gas.

Tim: Does the tube need to be removed before taking off the left rear fairing? I have to remove my emissions canister every time I pull off the fairing with the Tusk rack. Thanks for the videos.

Hi Rees, No, where I have this mounted, I can remove the left side panel without removing the tube. I did cut away a bit of the side panel to make for a better fit. Thanks for the question and for watching.

iProject - It could be done. Mounting them wouldn't be a problem, but I think the tubes would be exposed to a lot of potential hits in that position, particularly when riding off-road. Maybe carry extra zip ties in case one is hit/torn off. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

Also how do you actually replace the toon on the road? Taking the tire off and heading it is a total pain even with 3 tire irons by yourself. Have you tried it?

I have the same racks and I find my Tusk Panniers fit extremely tight to the rack and I believe you mentioned in another video yours did as well. Did you not find that the zip ties wrapped around your racks caused the panniers to be even tighter and not fit properly?

you may have to add the washers between the pannier and the bracket. Check out the Tusk installation videos.

I have the same tube. I find the threads to be quite inferior and the lid popping off when doing hard off road riding. I made a latch to ensure the lid cannot pop off. You stated that you do not have that problem. I am wondering if you ride off road on you KLR or if I just got a bad tube?? Keep up the great work...

Mike Perry - hey Mike, I have two of these tubes and the caps is very secure with deep threads on both of them. It can be a bit fiddly when trying to put the cap on (it wants to cross-thread), but other than that I've had no problems. I do ride off road (not real crazy) and it has never popped off or even worked loose. I can't imagine how it could, it is on there very tight. Perhaps you did get one from a bad batch? Tim is there any risk of the rear wheel hitting the tube tube. Would have liked to see a full rear view with clearance covered. I am assuming it must not be an issue or you wouldn't have done it. Thanks for all these great videos!

Ken, No the tube as I have it mounted is well outside of the rear wheel travel. There is at least 3-4" of clearance. Thanks for watching.

Agreed - I would like to fit my tire irons in this tube, but they are a few inches too long. Keep in mind these tubes are designed to hold operator manuals. We have re-purposed them as "tool tubes". Thanks for the comment and for watching.

If you cover up that little hole will it not expand in the heat? Might be dangerous if you had a fuel canister in it.

That's a fair point Mike. I only carry inner tubes and some tools. It was more important to keep it dry. I've not had an issue with expansion, but it may be because it doesn't get very hot in my area. Thanks for the comment and for watching.

I find if I use good quality zip ties, they will hold. However, you could use wire or steel clamps if you prefer.

Jose, I don't know of a way to lock this tube. I suppose you could drill a hole all the way through the threaded cap and put a pin with a small lock, but that may allow water in. Maybe other viewers can comment with their ideas. Thanks for the comment and for watching.
