Port Jeff - Inside Berth - Backwards - Before the Blizzard

Hours before we get hit by a huge Nor'easter, we make a run for Port Jefferson Long Island. After getting in the harbor, we have to change plans of the fly to get this barge to fit the dock.

You put that barge in with a shoehorn. In 1970 when I worked at the power plant next door, I saw a large oceangoing barge snap in half due to a mistake in offloading. One of those things you never forget! CUOTO

Hey Skip, While you were heading in and doing pirouettes I was busy eating a spagbol I'd prepared in the morning, washed down with a nice red wine. I got into this video as we could see more of the line changes and mooring, when I glanced at the bottle it was only half full. You said you were taking shelter which of course will trigger another story. Working in Denmark on a twin railroad tunnel project, two drives going from the Island of Zealand to the small Island of Sprogel that had two drive heading to meet some where in the middle hopefully!!!!! A storm was heading in and would hit in the next few hours I worked for the consultants to the clients they had a pilot spec launch and it was sent to get us. The shipper was ex Danish Navy and on the return journey he spotted a Russian submarine, radioed the sighting of course it was known the sub was there, but the shipper was asked to circle the sub and take close up photo's. The weather was closing in and each circle got worse, thankfully he aborted after the 4th and we headed for our harbor. I spoke with the skipper weeks later and it appeared the Danish Navy were interested in a design feature that was visible due to the roughening weather, the skipper told me the sub submerged shortly afterwards. I hope the info was well used because doing 4 x 360 in that was not nice even though I was in a self righting pilot boat.

I really enjoy the long videos Tim, thank you. In British Columbia, just off the Johnstone, you make the turn at the Broken Islands to connect to the Knight Inlet. Soon you’ll come to the lonely Chatham Channel which dog legs first west and then north. The Chatham seems wide, the southern part of the channel is guarded by a range a mile and a bit more in length. Tide and currents are strong here and rule. The bottom has gone from the usual glacier cut deeps of the Johnstone to less than 30’; what we in the PNW consider shallow. The width of the dredged portion of the channel, maybe 150’, the shoulders only 3’ or less below the surface. You can’t see a boat coming down the north leg of the channel and ofttimes one meets a tug with a log tow or super yacht coming the other way. It can make the whole afternoon interesting.

This would have been way back in the 70's and as the story goes (told to me by the Captain that was onboard) is that the Owner of the Company was standing up on the hill with a Customer when it happened! Another great ride along Capt, It is pretty impressive how you get out off push and made heads-tails in such a short time. and you also didn't have a lot of room off the bow of the tug until it was going to be on the caisson, almost like you knew what you were doing. Looked pretty smooth to me. Making changes in your plans so that everything works out without ruffing any feathers seems to be your natural way of getting things done. CUOTO

If you ever bring Paquita into Pt. Jeff be sure to tuck into the cove in the northeast corner of the harbor. Known locally as “Pirate Cove” and marked as a spoil area on NOAA charts, the cove affords great swimming, spectacular hiking to the top of the dunes, and a very quiet mooring field on weekday evenings. It’s likely that you will be the only overnight boat the next morning. A great place to get away from it all. I’ve been stopping at Pt. Jeff on my annual cruise for 35 years and it has always been one of my favorite stops.

Pirate's Cove got its name when my Dad was a kid. They would tell tourist that Capt Kidd buried treasure there but all us locals have always called it the Cove and yes its still a spoil area. My house was right across from the Cove. Most all the sand dredged by Seaboard Sand and gravel went to NYC for buildings and sidwalks.

Hey Tim I know you mentioned that many people had said that they grew up in Port Jeff and I am one of them. Spent many days boating with my dad and brother in the harbor. Clamming was our favorite! I can remember 44 years ago when the barge 3301 split in half at the fuel dock. Check out the pictures on line….. what a scene!

Fantastic!! I sleep on my boat every weekend in the summer. Pirates cove and Conscience bay, there's about 5 boats in our raft up. We have a mooring in the cove. My Grandfather was a tugboat captain from the late 50s or early 60s till late 80s he was in and out of PJ many times. My uncle was a deck hand early 80s I think till his union went on strike for a while . Sorry I'm vauge but I was a little kid back then but they were 2 weeks on 2 off I think..sorry for the rant lol

I grew up in the Midwest - we said it felt like snow. Maybe someone else has suggested this, but when you reference something on shore, could you add a circle to the view to point out where it is. I couldn't see the range lights until after you had changed positions on the tow, and I was watching on a 16" laptop screen. Keep up the good work - I enjoy it.

When I was a teenager I used to cross the sound in a little Boston Whaler into Port Jefferson and Oyster Bay from the Connecticut shore with some regularity. There is an ancient wreck right under the Port Jefferson Ferry channel in about 140 feet of water that still has hundreds of pounds of Silver in it, but it is not feasible to salvage it (it was the Steamboat Lexington, which burned and sank in 1840). Gee Captain, I have to say that some of the things you do are totally amazing to me.

Welcome again to my beautiful home of Port Jefferson harbor. I have lived here since I was a young child in 1957. Yes ... the fuel transfer dock is relatively small here. Sometimes, as happened the previous two days, the barges stack up waiting their turn and they anchor right in from of my house to wait their turn. The anchored barge is only about 300 meters off my shore, in front of my house. They are really lit up overnight to make them clearly visible.

My grandmother built a summer home in PJ in 1962 and my sister and I used to spend the summers there basically getting out of the NYC heat. Well it wasn't exactly PJ - it was in Miller Place. She eventually had a full season home built in Miller Place pretty much on top of a hill on Old Country Road. There was like 10 homes up there. The entire area was pretty empty.

My Port Jeff story is more about getting to and from than being there! 50 or so years ago I had to spend several days doing upgrade work for a customer in Danbury CT so I brought along my newly degreed but unemployed girlfriend to visit her friends in Port Jeff. On the way to LGA it was GF's first flight and I left the plane with claw marks covering my right arm. After 3 days worth of upgrades, we were ready to depart Danbury at the respectable hour of 2PM when my pager informed me the customer had already broken the equipment. At 4:30PM we departed Danbury, by 6PM we were on the Long Island Expressway, I mean parking lot and shortly after 9PM we arrived in Port Jeff. The next day we took the Long Island RR into NYC and back and I remember thinking it was a far better way to go. Monday morning we relived the Friday evening experience in reverse getting to LGA and I walked off the plane in Rochester with the other arm bleeding because GF decided to try the window seat. And of Port Jeff, I remember the train station, standing on the ferry dock looking at a big empty bay, watching some excellent student films at SUNY Stonybrook and showering in a 40 degree bathroom where I could see daylight streaming in alongside the window frame... I assume that house overlooking the sound has long since given way to a much pricier and definitely more comfortable home. Keep up the great videos and above all STAY SAFE! ⛴️❤️😷

I love these longer format videos Tim. Having spent most of my 65 years on the banks of the Kennebec River here in Bath, Maine, I've heard a lot about the range lights in the river. It's interesting to hear the roughly 150-year history of the lights. As you may know, Tim, this lower Kennebec region is rich in ship building going back almost 150 years and the Bath Iron Works continues its 138-year history and still builds Navy ships although they aren't wooden anymore. And just on the other side (Southern) of the city limits there is Phippsburg with it's even older and richer history of ship building. Site of the building of the first ship built in America. My ancestors include Berrys, Sewalls, Smalls off the top of my aging head.

Nice work. Started way back on a CG Ocean tug, always interested how you operate with so few hands. It takes planning and a good crew for sure. Crossing specialty engine to deck hand was unheard of back then. Much latter I preferred short crew if they were good. Less to watch out for.

Good Ole Port Jeff… it was one of our stops on the inaugural cruise of the infamous MG… cool little town with nice restaurants and bars. Weather was kind of crappy, so we didn’t get to enjoy it as much as we hoped. Anyways, good video and #CUOTO!!!

Nice ride along Tim as you said a lot of comments about memories I grew up in a little town on the south shore of long Island Called Sayville it is actually due south of Port Jeff My dad and I used to go fishing in Port Jeff when I was a little kid I now live in Maine and work as a tour boat captain in Portland as I have mentioned before again thanks for the memories

Can you imagine doing this before GPS. Going by compass or Loran C. One of my fishing boats I bought in 2002 had a loran C on it. I knew it existed but did not know how to use it at the time. I learned as it worked but once the chart plotters came out with good definition for fishing that was it for the loran. And yes, I used to go on the Ferry from Bridgeport to Port Jeff with my girlfriend in 1981 for day trips.

Really enjoy your video's Tim, just watched you break -up and then make-up on the barge heading into Port Jefferson. Can you speak about the art of Making-up along-side. This time it seemed your centerline was not parallel with the barge (bow seemed in and your boats stern was out about 12 feet or so from the barge). I assume there is a reason for this? I'll watch the rest and perhaps it will become evident.

Thank you for watching. We call that "pinch". If the tug is parallel to the barge, the two will always want to be pulled to the barge's side (because it has no propulsion, it's just drag). So by cocking the barge at an angle (giving the tug pinch) the barge crabs through the water allowing the tug to steer straight. CUOTO
