Haha, we're not here to audit the workshop Kris, we're here to admire the skill.
@carolewarner1019 ай бұрын
I know you always do your best to source all your building materials from Nature and your own land when possible. However, given just how much rain and windy weather you get there in winter and the shallow roof pitch on them, you might consider using something like Ice and Water Shield up, over and between those two dormers and out a meter or two either side of them. It seals around any fasteners that penetrate the roofing and would insure a no-leak zone around the dormers at least. You've already invested so much time and money in their construction that you don't want to have some micro leak soaking into your insulation without you knowing it before damage is already done. In addition to careful attention to installing a tight roof, using a product/treatment along those lines would provide excellent insurance should there be any tiny areas of moisture ingress caused by wind driven rain, keeping them from leaking altogether. One of those dormer bays will make such a lovely studio for Dot to spread out her work in and make her own, especially with a nice window to let natural light in. She'll be able to look out on the very sheep whose wool she's spinning into yarn! When you have a smaller living space, it's nice to keep it clean and free of clutter for serenity sake. Will be SO nice to have the barn done and all the space it will afford you both. We are building our own house and outbuildings as well, and we've really been inspired by seeing you switch gears from paying the amazing timber framing crew that helped you cut the frame to slowing things down and putting it all up yourself when the stress of the finances and all the challenges of keeping on a timeline became so overwhelming last fall. We could never afford to pay for all the materials and labor for someone else to build the design we want for our house, but if we're patient, steadfast and willing to work hard like you, we know we can build our dream design rather than compromising for the sake of speed and having a lesser expression of what we really want. We have a mill too and lots of trees, clay soils and tons of farmers producing straw in our area for great building materials, so if we stick to natural materials and using what we have right at hand, we can build something beautiful and lasting to live out our lives in too! All the crap weather must be very discouraging, but good on you for not letting it stop you from continuing to move forward. Can't wait to see what you'll be doing down on the ground floor with the walls and stone work. We always wait for your videos to come out with great anticipation. Really, really beautiful Kris. You're a real inspiration!

As Dot looks out at the sheep she watch the wool on them grow before her very eyes and will be reminded that the spinning job never ends ! What a satisfying life that sounds like.

I'm a designer for a commercial / industrial roofing / cladding company, for anything like that we would make custom aluminium valley gutters. Just make them generously wide under the roof sheets with a pitch as low as that and use foam fillers to stop wind-driven rain being pushed over them.
@emmaslow9 ай бұрын
So glad you decided to insulate - I have an uninsulated hangar in soggy Dodogne and every winter I have to bring all my tools and most of my materials in to my house and give over the ground floor to it all, otherwise everything rusts and moulds etc. I can't wait to upgrade it with insulation and managed ventilation so I can have a proper store and workshop. My first thought was decent storage for Dot's fleeces on the upper floor - a dry insulated space with some humidity management would make that possible 😊

Great work Kris. I dunno why - but the multi-tude of odd jobs was what got me hooked and I enjoy that immensely. If you're going to work and live in that space I reckon some more windows might be needed. Perhaps second level barn doors with block and tackle for lifting some decent equipment etc upstairs. Its a fairly significant change in reality. I'd be making it as liveable as possible now rather than later. Even if you put in what is needed to make it easily updated. I mean - a nice outdoor balcony at the far end wouldn't go astray, or even a roof viewing deck......
