Just passed my 69th birthday. With age comes wisdom, like the wisdom to watch your videos. I learn so much by watching. You have given me loads of ideas of how to "make do" with what's available instead of razing the environment for a less than durable result. I especially like when you create your own contraptions to tackle a task on your own as I'm in a wheelchair now and it takes a bit a of think to figure how to approach some projects. Chris, I rebuilt a 1870 20m by 60m by 20m high barn, 3m high .75m wide stone walls in the lower level and large beams in the upper part of the barn. A lot of the stone lower walls had to be torn out to below the ground level and rebuilt to the original height. We put 20m of windows in the one wall, geothermal heat in the cement floor, washrooms, big screen tvs, and pool table, shuffle board tables, and a large glass garage door hidden behind barn doors. Also installed a hot tub in a large flagstone patio outside in a stoned wall area adjoining to barn. Also insulated the lower level ceilingsI loved the job, it took 2.5 years to complete. After spending a lot of time rebuilding those stone walls I have great appreciation for the settlers who gathered and moved those stones to the job site and built those structures. Some our stones were so big some took two and three workers to lift. We also had to devise a way to hold up the upper structure when we tore down long stretches of lower supporting stone wall to rebuild. This was done in Ontario, Canada

Thank you for more great building work. It always amuses me to read the comments on the details, you must have a lot of architect fans that are good with pictures as opposed to the actual work. Its always easy to pass comment on others hard efforts, but after building houses for more than 20 years I can honestly say, if its warm and doesn't leak, and serves the purpose for the resident, its a miracle! I can't believe the skill set 1 man and wife can have and here's testimony to it, I love the water wheel! Well done Kris and Dot. The Barn will outlive you both im sure!

There’s one thing that experience over many years has taught me and I’m 78 with 100’s of single handed building projects behind me. I have learned the value of always wearing work gloves when handling lime and cement. I see you you’re not wearing gloves and nor did I when I was young, but now I prefer to wear gloves. It stops your hands from getting chaffed and dried out and protects them from minor scratches and digital injuries. Look after your hands, never take them for granted, they’re your greatest asset.

It's a lot of work for mostly 1 person Chris, so everyone should understand how much extra work it is to film especially on them cold rain filled days. I could sure tell you weren't enjoying the stone walls build on the rainy days so Thank you for taking the time to film. I do wish you would of put a couple steal rods in the base concrete though just to hold it tight as it cracks over the years. 😊

Hello Kris, sealing the wooden beam on both sides with concrete is a huge mistake. The beam shrinks and a gap forms between the wood and the concrete. This means you have a tub from which the water cannot escape. The beam must always have a drip edge where the water drips vertically. The concrete must be narrower than the beam.

Also, the concrete will detoriate the wood, if it is not specially made for this kind of work. We do have a lot Fachwerkhäuser (medieval houses with wood skeletons) whose owners renovated and realized too late it was the false kind of concrete.

Will the eaves of the barn roof keep enough water off of the beam to prevent this? I suppose they won't help with the gable ends though, will they?

Kris uses lime, not concrete (cement). Lime is more flexible. And I guess Tudor (and Fachwerk) houses were built the same way, using lime, so it should be all right. Drying time in these wet conditions will be long though.

​@@mbuster6769 tudor houses were build with hot earth lime and hot fat lime mixes that's why they have lasted so long, NHL and especially NHL5 which was designed for sea defences sets way too hard and doesn't have anywhere near the performance, it gets harder and harder over time and can't breathe, without constant wetting it will crack, there is very little free lime content in it. Natural stone requires traditional methods and an immense knowledge of mortars and how to mix them correctly.

I wouldn't have bothered with those sills. I would have just framed it inside those sections and left the bottom of the frame "floating" just above the finished wall. Then when the cladding goes on water can run down the face of the building on to the wall where hopefully it will drain away, but if it doesn't it won't be in contact with any of the structural timber. Essentially keep the timber part of the building "floating" above the masonry, like the posts currently are, but with the cladding going all the way to the bottom.
