Great video - many thanks. I just set this up using the SPD-SX Pro and it is pretty much the same. The only thing I would add on method 2 is that if you use the 'trigger reserve' option (not sure if SPD-SX has this) then it will start the backing track exactly on cue with the next inbuilt click. So as long as your backing track is exactly the right BPM then this makes method 2 a lot better. It also offers the option to using a click for the whole band and perhaps switch between several different loops. I found that I ran the actual backing track from the balanced master so it would be the same volume as my SPD-SX in the front of house mix and then used one of the direct outputs for the in ear mix which i send to our mixing desk for the rest of the band. One question though: Is there anyway to lock the pad when it is 'playing' the backing track. In the options i swapped from 'oneshot' to 'phrase' which means the pad goes from being 'poly' to mono but it still means if you hit it accidentally then you stop the backing track.

In a small venue format where you maybe don't want to rely on an underpaid sound engineer, this is my suggestion: Run your backing track on one of the small pads on top (the "true" backing track that contains ambient synths, specifically cued samples, swells, etc... basically stripped of all live instruments/vocals), then on the small pad next to it, run a duplicate of that track but with a click from your DAW. Program the output of the true backing track to the monitor output and the copy with the click to HEADPHONES ONLY. You have the option to link them so when one either one of them is triggered, the other also starts but now only you hear the click. But this will ensure that everything within the interface is in time. PROS: - you can now enhance your set very simply by introducing sounds that are either impossible to time or even just a pain to trigger while playing in real time - In my opinion it's easier than fussing with the timing of the in-unit click track. CONS: - the drummer is solely in charge of following this track, meaning the rest of the band needs to make sure they're following the drummer's cues if there are dynamic "breaks", trickier intros to songs, or softer parts between sections. - it seems lengthy but honestly takes 5 mins to create, export as sample, and program in the SPD-SX. But this has always worked for me smoothly as long as the band rehearses!! haha do not forget to rehearse, kids!

Really great video Tim! I did some songs recently with a band and they had some tracks where the stereo right track was the backing ... and the left channel was the click and a 'little' bit of the backing... easy split for headphones and 1 channel for out front. I need to set some tracks up for my band ... would this be an ok method or would you still recommend the pad link way?!!
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 2 жыл бұрын
Kev - panning click left and tracks right will totally work. It does have two limitations: 1) the track can only be "mono" which means you don't get the same fullness and stereo spread at FOH 2) the routing (to me) is a bit less clean. I love the pad link option because you can have stereo tracks and mono click and it gives you a few more options for routing. TL:DR - yeah that'll work, but I would still do the pad link haha

I know this is an older video, so my input might not be as relevant. The second method I wouldn't have even put in the video...pointless method. 2nd, if you are running vocal cues and a backing track at the same time, why wouldn't you import them as one wavform instead of linking pads? Vocal cues and click panned left and backing track panned right on the import track. I'm sure you are not doing a stereo mix live. That would be unorthodox. Route your click and vocal cues to a headphone amp mixer. So the drummer can turn up what they need. Everyone else can make their own in-ear mix.
@TimBuell
@TimBuell Жыл бұрын
Hey! Definitely see your point. A few reasons I still keep them separate: - churches doing live stream feeds might want stereo tracks - having them in one file sometimes leads to a tiny amount of bleed depending on the daw you use - having the click and track on separate pads gives more flexibility for volume and routing from the SPD-SX Again, you can do it in slightly easier ways but I’m a “safe not sorry” kinda planner.

Can you send the output of an individual pad to a sub or aux output, or even the headphones? If so you could use method 3 and send the backing tracks and played percussion to the front of house while sending the click track straight to your own headphone mixer, no need to get the sound guy involved. Or if your not concerned about your stereo image, mix your backing tracks hard left and your click track hard right in your DAW. Then export it an load it all onto one pad. Send your left to the house and your right to your headphone mixer.
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 5 жыл бұрын
Generation Empty yep! You basically have 4 independent mono outputs (main L/R and sub L/R) that you can send any .wavs however you want. The catch with the headphone out is that EVERYTHING you are sending. So even if click is only being sent to headphones, you can’t take out the main and sub sends from headphones. It is a little strange.

Well put, well educated by you Tim Buell and a great lesson as a usual user of this great device. One question, a friend/colleague has backing tracks running from his laptop in case he needs to make alterations on the go. I wanted to link my SPD-SX via midi, so I can plug in my headphones direct rather than using the packs from the engineer because the natural source from Roland is harder, battery from packs can run out too. Also as the second, third track plays the program change will change tempo. Can all of this happen. I mean is there magic in the air? Bless!

Hey Jose! I wouldn't use the Roland SPD-SX as a "monitor source" if that's what you were asking. I would rely on the belt packs. Just make sure you, the monitor engineer, or the tech checks batteries before your set and you should be good!

Cool tutorial, I use a jam hub instead of a mixer. It’s much cheaper and the sound is great. Stereo adapters for stereo mix with every input having full mix control. These are completely portable, one of my old bands did headphone jams for years to save time and money. VKit required... or mic your acoustic kit. I also have a rack headphone amp that will also do the same thing with monitoring. I’m trying to trigger the backing tracks with a boss double foot switch. Click and track linked but it’s giving me issues. Trying to get that going so all the pads are free and click from daw and track starting together with the foot switch. For some reason I can’t them since but they both play independently... working on that. Thanks for sharing your knowledge Pete

I have my band cues(panned right) and click track(panned left) so I can use both sub outs and run them into the mixer. The backing track itself exits through the master outs that go to the mixer. Both pads would be linked and boom! Everyone can adjust their mix of band cue, click and backing track. Another method is to use a DAW with your SPD-SX. I have it set up now to play the backing track directly from the DAW. The band cue track is on a pad and is triggered by a MIDI note. I am the only one that hears the click at the moment. I can of course output that from the sub left for example and pan it all the way left. The band cue would be panned all the way to the right. Only down side to it all is hitting the click right on the nose. Practice practice practice :-) I feel that the first method is the best. I have two pads that are linked, like you also mentioned and i am outputting 3 different sounds for the band. I also by the way use the SPD-SX as my monitor amplifier. I throw it into the Audio In and route just to the headphones. On the mixer I drop my Aux's coresponding faders to zero, so the sound isn't doubled. It is unfortunate that you cannot set up a pad to JUST go to Sub out or Master, then my amplifier trick would be even nicer, because then I could actually use my Aux's faders. Nice channel! Cheers!

I've toured with mine for several years, used it in a ton of situations, and it just keeps working. So even if it is more expensive, the durability and popularity of it make it still the most logical product in the space. Even if you have to save a bit longer for it, I think it will be worth it in the long run. You can send the tracks out the main outputs on the SPD-SX and then only send click through the headphones out. You don't actually need a separate headphone splitter.

Hi and thank you for your video! I have a question or maybe two ...three :) For this moment I use some program in my iPad to start and stop my backing tracks in that situation I make it like from a stereo backing track I make it in MONO and after that I put in my right side only click. Can you tell me with SPD-SX how is it the situation? Can I leave the backing tracks like stereo and how I can add the click? Hope you understood what I mean :) Regards

Hey, I use the spdsx the same way, I pad link. My only problem is I send click and track to the headphone output on the machine itself and the track only to main out/mono, however now my band want a feed from the click track but not sure on how or what other tools I need in order to do that? Would a simple headphone splitter do this? I also use a headphone amp just for myself to have closer to my side.
@TimBuell

If your headphone amp has multiple outputs, I would just run headphone extensions out of the amp over to your band mates (if I'm understanding your set up correctly).

You can send the one click pad to the headphones and Sub outs. Plug a quarter inch cable from sub out L/mono to your mixer and then they can adjust their Aux Outs.

If you’re running a click that’s been uploaded as a track, how do you split that out of the mix to FOH?
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Matilda! Great question! You can route whatever pad the click is on to an output that isn't going to FOH. For instance, you can route your pads with tracks and samples to "main out L/R" and then the click track pads route their output to "sub out" or just the headphone output if you want. Hope that makes sense! I'm sure I covered this in one of my SPD-SX videos but I have no idea which one! haha

Thank you Tim! Most of my gigs are playing at churches. I typically launch the tracks using Ableton Live. I've been wanting to launch (start & stop) the tracks using a SPD-SX but I'm unfamiliar on how to use/set it up to do so. Instead of Ableton playing the drum loops, I'd like to play the loops on the SPD-SX especially if there are sections where there are no acoustic drums happening. 1. I'd love to see a video on how to work with the sound guy on how to set up the SPD-SX like you mentioned in this video. 2. In-ears on live gigs (outside of church). I typically bring my own small mixer so I can use in-ears. I get an aux feed and use a click which no one else because I'm the only one that has in-ears at the moment. I can never get my in-ear mix right. Do you use a crowd mic plugged into your mixer? So...would love to see a video on how you do that. Wow....that was a long comment.

Thanks in advance!
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 4 жыл бұрын
Tato - great question. Sounds like Reaper might be adding a bit of space at the front or end of your clips you are bouncing out. Which, over time, is going to cause sync issues. I'd start by trying to see if you can get that super tight before moving it over to the SPD.

Great stuff! Love the options on the SPD-SX, not super stoked about the controls and menu layout.. 2018 Roland! That being said: Next challenge for me; use method 3, but cut up intro / verse / chorus / bridge / outro and dedicate these to different pads, enabling me to hit pad ‘chorus’ when in let’s say the middle of verse 1, so that by the end of verse 1 track section ‘chorus’ starts! But.. when not hitting the ‘chorus’ pad, the tracks just follows natural order, verse 2 or chorus after verse 1! ..and all of this with countdown cues and spot-on clicktrack! 😃 I believe this is possible, but didn’t invest the right amount of time yet 😉 Do you know if this can be done?? This would be great for worship, spontanious parts, repeating sections etc. Do keep up the good work, love your channel and what you do! 😊👍🏻

Tim, this is because of the time required setting this up in the SPD-SX vs. simply using MIDI and trigger the sections from Ableton? Not used Ableton much, does it have the feature to trigger a chorus halfway a section, starting it after the section playing? So I’ll have to get nerdy with my Ableton-expert buddy, love it 🤓😉 Thanks

Yes! Ableton is SO flexible. You can trigger from your computer keyboard, a MIDI keyboard, a drum pad. And you can jump where ever/when ever you want in a song (if you set up tracks using Arrangement View). I have a whole course on this www.timbuellmusic.com/ableton . The course covers everything from getting started, to setting up tracks, to advanced things like live looping (using live recorded audio) and a ton of other stuff. Over 6 hours of video lessons. Method #4... make your backing tracks mono and have the track panned one direction and the click panned the other direction. Then you're not eating up two pads for every song.
@TimBuell
@TimBuell 4 жыл бұрын
Very true! If you want to rock mono tracks that is the way to go. Even so, I like having them across two different pads for the ability to control the click/track level independently and have a bit more control with things like that.

Steve Osborne 100% agree. And I’m of the opinion that the more you give a FOH engineer to remember...the more likely they are to forget! haha Definitely depends on the situation, but mono is the way to go to make things easier and more foolproof.
