I bought my Alp D'Huez last week and I agree with everything you said. I've had many bikes over the past 38 years, very few of them felt incrementally better than the last. This is by and far the best frame I've ridden. I paired it with DA Di2, rim brakes, Pro Vibe stem and bar and, ahem, Lightweight wheels... which I only bought because it's very difficult to find reasonably priced quality wheels right now and I was able to find these locally with just a few miles on them. The bike came it at 14.8 lbs with Wahoo pedals. I couldn't be happier.

Thanks Andy, I enjoyed your review of the 01ADH. Ha, I had the same experience with the Time clipless pedals in 1990 I think it was. I use the xpro 10 (which Time told me was sold to SRAM) and they are nice but make an annoying squeaking sound like the early Look pedals did. This happens when riding up hill. I spray some WD40 on them and it shuts them up but two rides , but later, it is back. Sort of like checking the oil in an old VW every few drives... ANYWAY, I just received the ADH01 from Time in Slovakia, 50% discount and for 2000 Euro, wow what a beautiful frame. I was about to build it up and I noticed that the drive side chain stay has an indentation on the outside and also on the inside, as if the assembler squeezed the seat stay tube with their thumb and index finger. I thought maybe this is for chainring clearance and tire clearance but man, it seems more like a manufacturing defect. I sent photos to Merek at Time and he forward them to Max in their tech dept and in a day he wrote back this is an intentional indent on both sides to facilitate the clearance that I mentioned. Did your fame or does your fame also have these?

Hey Andy, interesting timing for your video! I’ve been having a lot of thoughts about Time in the past few months. Their older frame finishes didn’t really work for me and as I’m aesthetically driven I opted to wait. The new finishes are so classy! I’m after a frame for a full Campagnolo rim brake build. I’m not wanting to over capitalise on a rim frame as it’s more just to tick the campy box. However I’m also so impressed by Time that I’m considering a double purchase and getting a disc frame also. So a few questions: 1. Do you have any thoughts or experience with the Alpe d,Huez 21 versus the AdH 1? 2. Did you try the time carbon bars at all? I see you had an alternative bar on your bike in the video. They look pretty sweet. 3. Have you tried the regular fork, as opposed to Activ fork? Thanks for your review.
@AndyClarkRealReviews2 жыл бұрын
Hey Joel! Yeah, I spent a weekend on the ADH1 and it's really close but I could definitely feel a difference in the responsiveness column. The Time bars are amazing, but the bend shape didn't work for me (they are too deep). Lastly, stick with the Activ fork. It's the real deal and makes a difference for sure (you can also remove the damper to reduce weight, but it's only like 50g).

I’m still on a 2013 SuperSix Evo hi mod, which I know was a favorite of yours Andy way back when. Part of the joy of this bike of course is that in addition to its stiffness in the right spots and awesome ride, it’s also comically lightweight (mine is 14.5 with cheating titanium speed plays). I’m looking at these Time bikes as a possible new bike option so curious how you can relate the Time to that old Cannondale? Also, was the R5 a huge step up from that Evo, as that’s also on my shortlist….
@AndyClarkRealReviews2 жыл бұрын
I would step over the R5 to get to the Alpe D'Huez, and I actually did: I sold my R5 disc a few months after I built up the Time. The SuperSix is an amazing frame, but at the end of the day it's lacking the smooth refinement of the ADH. "Ride Quality" can be hard to define, but you definitely KNOW it when you feel it - and the ADH delivers the most vintage-steel like ride I've ever experienced on a carbon bike, without sacrificing any of the gains of a modern carbon frame. And yes, I stole that analogy from another commenter because he said it better than me!!
@lostincosmos2 жыл бұрын
@@AndyClarkRealReviews I saw in the video that you jumped ship for the ADH, yeah, and it was clear how much that meant to you. And really if this ADH is supposed to ride like my steel De Rosa Primato (the '95 with the Columbus OS tubing which is sooooo sweet) then that's pretty impressive and makes me very curious! but will it come with the same weight penalty and the lesser stiffness from, say, bottom bracket through rear chain stays that made this EVO so damn efficient? I admit I'm spoiled at this point and the thought of paying out many thousands for a bike that weighs 17lbs makes my heart stop a bit! I'm too slow to add further riding penalties :)
@AndyClarkRealReviews2 жыл бұрын
@@lostincosmos I'm of the opinion that at some point, lower weight equals diminishing returns. The ADH is 960 grams, and the SSE is 650. You can easily find 300g elsewhere, but honestly it won't make you either faster or slower. Aerodynamic and mechanical resistance gains can far "outweigh" the 300g. Wheel/tire setup alone can make up the difference, even if it's heavier! I'd recommend spending some time with the Marginal Gains podcast to better understand where I'm coming from.

What i would like to know: How about the weight of the frame? Is it yet a rim brake version? These days with almost every frame having disc brakes, the weights increased step by step. We are now at frame weights about a 1000 Grams, whereas just a few years ago people (including me) were looking for frames getting way beyond this line. With the „disappearance“ of rim brakes also the quest for the lightest frame seem to have disappeared. Nowadays marketers call a complete bike with just under 8 kgs „lightweight“, which is almost ridiculous i.m.o.

I'm a bit puzzled about that comment regarding tire clearance. Time writes on its homepage max. tire size is 28C - 30mm. I want to run Enve 4.5 AR Disc wheels and 28mm tires which I expect to balloon to 30mm. If these don't fit, then that is not the frame for me unfortunately. Everything else I'd really like about the ADH1. It is 5mm shorter than my Tarmac SL6 and has a higher stack. As I am more legs than torso this would allow me to run a longer stem and less spacers under it. But the tire clearance seems to be a dealbreaker unfortunately :(
@AndyClarkRealReviews2 жыл бұрын
Will they (air quotes) fit? (air quotes)...yes: to the naked eye, there appears to be plenty of clearance on a 30c when the bike is stationary or in the stand. However, when the tires, wheels, and frame flex (as they should) under normal use, the 30c tires will ABSOLUTELY rub on the frame. It's light, and imperceptible, but it happens (and I have the bald spots on my frame's paint to prove it). Go for the new ADHX if you want something with more range.

I rode a TIME RX Instinct in college and it was my favorite bike I have owned to date. Currently riding a 54cm Allez Sprint that I feel good on and comparing geo charts it seems like the headtube lengths on the Time are consistently taller which would lead one to believe a more relaxed fit (comparing the 54 Allez 133mm to a small Time 149mm HT length). The Time also has a much shorter reach and taller stack so I am wondering how "racey" this bike rides compared to the Allez if you have any experience. I am looking at purchasing a ADH 01 frame but am having a hard time determining size with no dealer close to me. Time's charts would lead my 175cm build to a medium but the geo specs seem way too big compared to my Allez. Any recommendations or experience here?

I would send this question to the guys at Time. They can help! Try info@timebicycles.com
@brianwestcoat2802 жыл бұрын
For what its worth, I just bought and built a ADH 01 size SMALL. I'm 175 cm and here is my current setup. Saddle height is 70cm, 100mm -6 degree stem with 15mm spacers, Power Pro saddle setback 8cm (standard saddle setback 5cm). My previous bike was a Tarmac SL6 Pro disc size 54, and after having professional bike fit I had it setup as follows, saddle height 70cm, 90mm -6 degree stem with 10mm spacers, Power Pro saddle setback 8cm (standard saddle setback 5cm). You can review the Tarmac geometry for yourself but you will see that the Small ADH01 and the 54 Tarmac are practically identical except for the reach in which ADH01 is 11mm shorter. At first glance at ADH01 geometry I would agree stack seems tall for a racy bike, but after digging into it I now think that its more that the reach is short because it is intended to be run with a longer stem as part of the overall design and one should be sizing down to match desired stack height. So instead of buying a MEDIUM and running with a 100 stem, one should be be buying a SMALL and running with a 110mm stem thus achieving the equivalent of a Tarmac size 54 with a 100 stem (stock). If you look on the Time US site and look at the "complete bikes", you will see that the SMALL size comes with a 110mm stem stock. Like all bike sizing charts its just a starting point, and probably for a beginner, the sizing recommendations are more applicable as they will sit more upright etc. For me personally, I actually debated between the SML & XS sizes. Since the reach was the same, it became a function on stack height, but XS was a bit too low for me. Again for what its worth, if your current Allez setup is similar to my Tarmac setup, I say go with size SMALL or even XS if you want to get really low. BTW - I have been out on a few rides and I will say the ADH 01 did not disappoint, it is superb in all aspects. I will post a more in depth review of the bikes performance on here in the coming days.

@@brianwestcoat280 great to hear! I would caution other readers to buy a bike that suits their individual measurements, though. Bike fit, as you know, involves more than just a height measurement - and like snowflakes, no two human bodies are exactly alike. Thank you! The 21 has a slightly less expensive carbon, with better overall compliance. I’ve ridden both, and the 21 is smoother and a little less responsive- but not much! It’s still an extremely agile bike.

What specifically do you like better about the time vs your Cervelo R5. The Cervelo is lighter and I can't imagine why a racer would want this time fork that adds weight. I am looking at the R5 and waiting bfor Willier and Colgnago to come out w new models. Curious as to what year your R5 was and what wheels you are/we're running on both bikes. I'm intrigued by the Time even though the frame shape looks dated and I wonder how much R&D they are actually doing now and if they will update this alpe de huez model in 2023 or not. Any insights you can share would be appreciated as there aren't many European made options left for carbon bikes these days. Cheers

Hi Mark, I was on a 2018 R5 Disc with ENVE 4.5AR's which was slightly more harsh across bumpy and choppy roads. The ride on the R5 was also more noisy and felt a little more like plastic than wood, if that make sense? The Time, overall, is a smoother more muted ride with quick but less racy handling. I don't expect a 2023 update, but I know they're deep in R&D for a refresh of the model in 24 or 25.

Hey Andy, i own the same cervelo r5 disc with the same paint, you mentioned that you decided to go with time ADH after only one ride, that to me it's quite surprise to hear; like you, i really like the cervelo r5 and to me that most two outstanding characteristics of r5 are 1.responsiveness in transferring power and 2.agility in handling, only one noticeable downside is its harshness on riding, you almost feel every little bump on the road, but i guess that's also another manifestation of 'responsiveness'... anyway, i would really like to know what's about the so-called 'ride quality' in your experience that completely out-run the cervelo r5 then led to such a decisive switching choice.
@AndyClarkRealReviews Жыл бұрын
You nailed it when you mentioned the noticeable downside: the harshness. The ADH replaces harsh with smooth, and doesn’t sacrifice any performance.
@willyturing1803 Жыл бұрын
@@AndyClarkRealReviews damn, that for sure is something, how about the handling, i noticed that the ADH actually got quite large trail compares with r5 at the similar size, i really like the agile feeling on R5 when getting out of the saddle, you can just rock the bike left and right smoothly with such an ease, unlike my trek emonda slr, it handles a little bit sluggish when out of the saddle and lacking that lively feeling, you can easily feel that when riding with no-hand, emonda slr can be kept straight really easily. do you think that the Time ADH is on the lively side like r5 or on the more stable/sluggish side like emonda slr?
@AndyClarkRealReviews Жыл бұрын
@@willyturing1803 R5 is on the nervous and nearly twitchy side of the spectrum, but that’s because it’s supposed to be; it’s an ultra responsive, pro-caliber superbike. From 25MPH to 45MPH it’s a DREAM. That was one of my favorite features TBH. The ADH won’t feel as muted as the mass-appeal Trek, but it’s definitely not as quick to respond to input as the R5. If this story was Goldilocks and the three bears, the Trek is too cold, the R5 is too hot, and the ADH is just right - at any speed.

@@AndyClarkRealReviews I think i'm gonna get the ADH, i haven't ridden the new r5(fully internal cable version), not sure what's the difference, but damn i just love this old version, not sure if i'd want to let it go though, i was actually considering new scott foil 2023 so that i have full reasons to justify keeping my r5, but it seems now the chance of me getting ADH is much bigger and doesn't make sense to keep two climbing bikes. And also not sure if the ADH 2023 version actually allow me to run 30mm tires(measured, 28mm claimed). Because i seriously couldn't tell the real difference between 2022 ADH 01 and 2023 ADH. @AndyClarkRealReviews2 жыл бұрын
@@PeterSdrolias that could be one of a thousand things, tbh, none of which are the frame. I would suggest a partial tear-down and thorough cleaning and greasing of all the contact points: skewers and dropouts front and rear, pedal axles, chainring bolts, rear derailleur bolt etc. if it’s all dirty and hasn’t been serviced in a while the creak may be from somewhere else. If that doesn’t work then pull/clean/grease the crank and BB. You should also apply a fresh coat of carbon paste to the seat rails, seatpost and stem for good measure. I do this at least 4x a year with all my bikes.

@@AndyClarkRealReviews I checked a lot of bikes (major brands and boutique) and as far as I know non of them has that high BB, even in biggest sizes. Majority are between 70 and 75mm drop. I pay attantion to this as I have Basso Palta 1 which has perfect geo for both road and fast gravel, except 65mm BB drop (same as Alpe D Huez). I can really feel it is too high in road bike mode, especially used with shorter crankarms. I cannot tell for sure that 5-10mm make a huge difference, but teoretically with 73 degree head angle bb maybe a bit lower for better security on descends. Thanks for the brilliant review. I'm hoping that as a TIME brand ambassador it ok to ask for your opinion/advice. I've pretty much talked my self into the ADH frameset, but trying to decide between 01 and 21. I had been eyeing frames from Chpater2, Factor, Open etc, but am intrigued and impressed with Time's manufacturing process and quality. My current bike is 2020 Spec Tarmac SL6 Pro Disc Force AXS size 54, Roval CL50, Pirelli PZero Race 28cc run tubeless @ 72/67psi. I'm 5'9" 170lbs. I don't race but do rack up about 150 mile/week on NorCal roads. I love this bike and am very comfortable with ride quality performance etc. but am looking for something new. I will be moving virtually all componentry over from this SL6 onto new ADH. Have a few concerns/questions. I'm looking for any excuse to buy the 01 but am concerned it might be to firm/harsh of a ride compared to my SL6. I know Activ fork is an option, but it seems not readily available in US and I'm not ecstatic about the additional cost and weight so I'd rather stick with regular fork (although my new authorized dealer in Berkeley, CA thinks they can get it not problem) I know from your review you had an RC5 which I believe to be similar to Sworks SL6, so just looking for your thoughts if you think that my ADH 01 disc with the above mentioned componentry will be similar in terms or performance/compliance but with with that extra refinement from the superior quality from Time manufacturing method etc., or if its just too racy and I'd be better off going with ADH 21. One other thing to mention is that per my fit, I have to run a 90mm stem on my SL6 and per ADH geometry, actually looks like will be a slightly better fit for me and I will be able to run a 100mm stem. ON a side note, I also have a 2020 BMC Roadmachine 02 Three as my more endurance/light gravel bike so the ADH will really be my "let's go fast/fun" bike. Thank you in advance for your time/thoughts/guidance.

Hey Brian, thanks for the note. I haven't spent any time onboard the Tarmacs, so I couldn't make a direct comparison to that specific line. However, I've spent time on just about everything else (Dogmas, Factors, Cervelos, etc) and the Time really stands out from the crowd. I honestly didn't know how rigid/stiff/chattery those other bikes were until I got on the ADH - one of my other viewers @MattTTT commented below that "...its the closest thing to a classic steel frame in feel except it has that light feel and rockets uphill with ease" and for me that sums it up; it's smooth and muted when it needs to be, but fast as a Ferrari when you punch it. It's truly comfortable and performant at any speed, unlike the Dogma or R5's which only come to life above 40kph/25mph. Will it "perform" "better" than your SL6? Maybe. Will it be an overall better riding experience? Hell yes. I say pull the trigger!
