Here we cut up and review a TIME Scylon 2018 frame. This frame was donated by James, it was new however it had the front derailluer mount in the wrong place and was replaced under warranty.
These are made using the Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) process instead of the typical bladder molded prepreg that we usually see. This brings different characteristics to the construction.
Time have videos of their process on their page.
On this channel we show marketing free, real information about the bikes that you ride.

Great review Raoul. The warranty defect was from the frame being slightly out of tolerance on the jig when drilling the derailleur holes - Time were great about it, easy to deal with and I’ve had 4x of their frames and this is first one there was an issue (they moved factory so probably a tooling setup issue). Since Time frames cost the same as a mid-upper range Specialized, I’d buy Time every time 😜

@@jamesyoung4453 i know the initial fault was with the wrong placed/drilled holes, but at 36:06 Raoul mentioned crack indication. The same kind of cracks seemed to appear at the junction between seatstays and seattube. Did Raoul get into further investigation about this? Haven‘t seen cracks like this on other frame cut ups. Don‘t think it was caused by cutting the frame, since he uses fine dremel tool to do so.

There's something truly magical to these bikes, an experience that you only understand when ridding a TIME bike. Yeah sure the BB's are round straight and parallel ( why wouldn't they be) and the frames finished inside nicer than most on the outside. Maybe it comes from weiving the carbon Kevlar and vectran in different direction or maybe it's from weaving a thread of narrative through the fabric of Time and some saviour fair. Chapeau

It looks good compared to some of the other frames we have seen. It would have been nice to see the fork as well because they use as resonator device in the for legs to dampen road vibrations. I think the technique is the same as that used in some skyscrapers and Japanese Pagodas to withstand earthquakes. The weakness does seem to be at junctions between tubes. At 34:49 you point out the cracks on the left side of toptube - seatube junction but there is a crack on the right side running the visible length of the tube. Maybe the cracks were caused by cutting the frame apart but that still shows they are weak points. Something I can't understand about the process. There is a wax mandrel that the fibres are woven around and the whole item is placed in a female mould. The resin is then transferred through the fibres. The melting point of the wax must be higher than the curing temperature of the resin otherwise it will melt during curing and not provide the necessary support. But if the wax melting point is higher than that of the resin why does the cured resin not melt when they are removing the wax? I have seen the RTM technique used by boat hull manufacturers but their process is slightly different. They still vacuum bag but they attach pipes to each end of the bag and use the vacuum to draw out the air in the fibres and then draw resin into the bag and through the fibres. I'm wondering if Time also draw the resin through the mould rather that inject. It would seem better to draw it through because that also draws out air. Could prepreg fibres be woven around a mandrel and placed in a female mould?
@Jeppelelle
@Jeppelelle 4 жыл бұрын
"But if the wax melting point is higher than that of the resin why does the cured resin not melt when they are removing the wax?" Epoxy becomes thermoset after the curing process between the resin & hardener. The exothermic reaction between some resin & hardeners produces enough heat by itself to start the curing process while other combinations require heat, Time uses heated molds when they "drag" the resin through the fibers, after the curing process the thermoset polymer can resist more heat than that of the curing reaction itself. So in the case of Time they use low enough heat to not melt the wax but high enough heat to start the curing process of the hardener they are using, after curing they take it to an oven to melt the wax & by that time the curing process have created a polymer that can withstand higher temperatures than that of the first curing process itself, so the resin doesn't melt at those higher temperatures, instead it keeps curing the resin As an example: www.lord.com/products-and-solutions/electronic-materials/thermoset-30067-epoxy-system That product can cure at 100C (low enough to not melt the wax) & optionally after curing it can also be used for post-curing at 150C (maybe high enough to melt the wax but still cure the polymer) (i doubt Time do a full post-cure, bikes does not need that high temperature resistance, Time most likely just use the post-cure heat resistens properties of the polymer to just extract the wax & then take the frame out again when the wax has melted)

On one hand the post-preg and mandrel process produces a clean interior and virtually eliminates the possibility of wrinkles and gaps. On the other, it increases the amount of resin used, as mentioned, and reduces the capability for fine-tuning the strength/compliance/stiffness/weight of the frame design. Of course, unless you're trying to set records in weight reduction, the fine-tuning might be overrated. 45 years ago we never fretted about which was lighter, a Cinelli, a Gios, a DeRosa, or a Colnago.

It is cool how they weave the carbon, but however, they use many more pieces to put a frame together, where as most brands whether they make it themselves like Giant and Merida or source it out like trek or or Bianchi, etc. put the main triangle together in one piece and then glue the rear triangle to frame after. I don't see how you can specifically place certain fibers where needed when it's weaved. Weaving is like braiding you can only weave or braid in a certain way.

I looked at Time's website and apparently there's some kind of moving weight element in the fork for vibration damping. Have you cut open one of these forks, and if so what does that look like / is it a risk of breaking?

they have done that for almost 20y, no risk. They branched out to the carbon fork buisness before they added their frame buisness.

Colnago uses lugged construction for their top of the line CXX frames whereby all the CF tubes and lugs are made separately and then assembled into a frame, unlike a monocoque frame which is cast as one whole piece. Isn't Colnago's method of CF bike manufacturing easier to control from a QC standpoint? I suppose they too would be using RTM method for the individual pieces. It would also be easier for them to check for voids/errors in the molding as well. Why don't more bike manufacturers use this method of construction?
@davidngqkalone88
@davidngqkalone88 4 жыл бұрын
Colnago does not use RTM for the lugs AFAIK. there are GCN videos on colnago lugged bike construction which clearly show they aren't RTM made. lugged contruction is not popular because of significantly more manufacturing processes and inventory costs. you have to have a set of lugs for each frame size, and you have to make the tubes for each junction. so You are essentially making tooling for headtube junction, BB junction, seat tube junction,. top tube, down tube, seat stays and drop outs. that is 7 sets of tooling per frame size as opposed to just one or two for monocoque construction. Not to mention you have to miter the tubes to fit well.cutting a piece of tooling like a mold is a six to seven digit cost item that wears out over several thousand pieces (depending on complexity)- so the costs involved are quite abit higher And then you have to glue them in place with a jig that fixes them precisely in place, so you need to make the jig as well. Also, lugs to some degree limit your design freedom.

@TheAntoine191 4 жыл бұрын
Each junction makes for wasted material and weak spot so you end up with an heavier frame. That's why there aren't more lugged carbon bikes anymore apart from Colnago and specific custom geometry needs. RTM for bike is Time property was co developed with french labs (military purposes if i remember well). It certainly does not looks easy to replicate.

@@TheAntoine191 How is it a weak spot if the parts are easier to check for flaws and you have tubes connecting with lugs like on a steel bike - so the junctions are twice as strong as you have double the material at the junctions.

Did you have a chance to see if this had a made in France tag anywhere? I had a close look at a Slovak made scylon disc frame today and didn't feel it compared favourably to the my French made 2012 RXR Ulteam. They moved to Slovakia to save on labour costs, but did take note of a change from a compressed carbon seatpost head to an aluminium one, perhaps they made other compromises?

I'm afraid I'll have to report this vid. This is pure engineering pornography. (All jokes aside Raoul, the sound of your voice seems a bit low at times on that one + a few buzz sounds here and there. Probably the mic's lacking in crispiness/clarity. Not a problem for native or well trained english speakers i suppose but trickier to hear you on a couple expressions for lesser trained ears.)

the best-looking carbon frame shown on this channel. still, it’s only carbon. it won’t last. it won’t survive impact. it’s only advantage as a material is weight.

@Steve King a steel frame with carbon seat post and carbon handlebar will ride way better than both alloy and carbon. I would go for a steel fork but you can also get a carbon fork. Will outlast you in longevity as well. Loose a couple kilos off the old gut and you're golden.
