Some will say that it was all overblown and that we wasted our time because nothing happened. When really, programmers and technical experts worked day and night so that nothing would happen.

My dad was one of the many engineers that worked on Y2K a projects. His project started 1997 and he was “on call” in his office building that night. My mum went with him and they had their own little 2000 celebration, when it all rolled over without a hitch. He was happy to see the end of it! I was 18, and out at a missive gathering partying like it was 1999 😅

I keep a book about Y2K on my shelf -- Time Bomb 2000 -- that I've had since 1999. I keep it as a reminder of how things don't always happen the way we think they will. Now, I also don't belittle or criticize Y2K preparedness. A good friend of mind was in the tech sector at the time and basically said things weren't going to get bad but that's because companies like his were spending tons to fix a real tech issue. So, had companies not taken action, while maybe not dystopian, midnight could have brought some major complications. So always prepare for the worse, pray for the best, and live each day like it's your last.

I have yet to hear reasonable logic as to why a computer turning a 99 into 00 would crash everything.
@EerieV23
@EerieV23 5 ай бұрын
@jasonr375 the problem was in many programs the date was tracked as mm/dd/yy. So, when 12/31/99 became 01/01/00, would read as January 1, 1900; not 2000. Think how companies track sales, workers hours, etc. It would cause major issues in every industry. The programers went in and changed it to mm/dd/yyyy so it would read the date correctly.

I remember (43 year old woman here) - my next door neighbor where I grew up in NJ (he was 6'5 200+ Defensive End for Penn State in the 1960s) - was warning us all before I went off to college in the summer of 1999 - the end of times was coming. He had a FULL set of guns and whatnot - and he was starting to dig a bunker - 'just in case'.

This looks like a bunch of hokum. I was a technician at MCI telecommunications and we had to swap out PROMs or EPROMS on controller cards on some systems and the programmers created software patches to include the digit 2 in front of the year, especially for customer billing, but that was done in plenty of time to keep phone and data service working just fine. I did have to sit at work that night in the Southeast Regional Long Distance Terminal just so that someone could say that we could respond to any glitch, but I was working the usual night shift anyway like every other night shift. After all, almost all work on the telecommunications grid is done at night when customers are asleep. It was the ignorant journalists who were they fearmongers.

When you grow up during the 80s with all the moral panics, you realised in the 90s that this was nothing more than an extension of that mass hysteria and to this day, people keep being easily manipulated by the media and excessively paranoid who want to sell you something in the name of survival but yet those people cant explain what use that money is to them if all the world is going to fall where money is useless. People have to learn to sit back, look at things objectively from the outside rather than getting caught up in the hype and hysteria.

It was boring because people took it seriously and thus programmers worked tirelessly to fix the problem *before* it happened. If people hadn't taken it seriously then, ironically, there would have been problems.
