How was Y2K? Who was Y2K? And also, where was Y2K?
These are all terrible questions.

My dad was a computer programmer up to a couple of years ago when he retired. From 1997 to 2000 he spent over 3 years fixing code and editing records to fix Y2K. Our next door neighbor buried 10K and all his family's jewelry and valuables in his backyard on Dec 31. My dad woke up to him digging it up on Jan 1, and laughed at him. Good times.

I remember applying patches for Y2K in the months leading up to it, and managing some systems that were never Y2K compliant for years after. Y2K was real, the problems were just patched or assessed to be trivial largely. Plus, many critical systems used UNIX epoch time, which records time in second since 1970. UNIX had a Y2038 problem, where the register would overflow. UNIX has long since upgraded to a 64-bit register for time, so should be good until after the sun dies. Thanks to OP's dad and others, the money wasn't wasted, the problem was fixed.

The funniest story I heard on the Y2K bug (or maybe more appropriately, the Y1.9K bug) was in the late 90s, a 105 year old man in Germany receiving a letter in the mail addressed to his parents. The letter said that he was required to be enrolled in school. And it was because the local government still had birthdays in 2 digit year format, so it assumed he was only 5 years old.

Ironically, one of the best ways to form a stable relationship is to (A) be basically tolerable people and (B) for both partners to be aware that the other person really does not mind walking away. I've found that kind of situation tends to force partners to be more appreciative and respectful. It's nobody's ideal, but it's durable.

My favorite Y2K story is one a teacher of mine told me... He was in college and had gone to a huge party hosted by his friend for Y2K. He and another friend snuck away to the breaker box and waited for midnight. The moment the clock hit 12, they cut the power to the house and laughed their asses off as they heard people screaming from the main room. They rejoined the group just in time to see one dude dart out of the house and run down the street screaming, "It's the end of the world!" You would have the street lights still being on would have tipped him off. Anyways, thanks Mr. A, your class was awesome!

They emerged in 2007, reasserted control of the actual government behind the scenes, and ran everything ever since. It's how we got Obama. BUT, They couldn't entirely reassert power. As a computer programmer, this was an apocalypse we all found especially ridiculous. 1) The vast majority of systems use UNIX time internally, for things like automatically running a program or storing date & time. The equivalent of the Y2K issue won't hit for those systems until 2038, and that only for the old 32-bit systems (largely replaced already). 2) Almost NO code, even for critical and time-aware logic, actually depends on the exact year or date. Your power grid, plane flights, etc. all work just fine if they think the year is 1900. Even bank transactions, in principle, only care about relative times. For GPS this is literally the case. 3) Most software written after the early 1990s didn't even have the bug, anyway. The extreme memory limits for computers were gone by that point, at least for non-embedded, "normal" computers with a recognizable OS and such. And Y2K was an annoying, easily avoided bug in new code. Truly ridiculous things were fears like nukes doing off or planes crashing. The nuke launch system isn't fully computer controlled (for very good reasons), and planes' flight software doesn't need good date code to fly. It all came down to this public fear that ANY significant bug in a piece of software would totally break it. As an insider, I can tell you that IF that was true, none of your laptops or cell phones would EVER work.

Considering the fact that some systems are STILL using the 60s era tech that would have caused issues, I think you have far too much faith in the fact that all 32 bit systems will be replaced. I mean up until recently the air force was still using freaking floppy disks for launch codes. And the ONLY reason they stopped was because they couldn't get enough floppy disks to continue doing so
@azusattack
@azusattack Жыл бұрын
@@Demonslayer20111 60s? Floppy disks were invented in the 70s. And 32 bit machines weren't really commonplace until the late 90s and early 2000s. But 2038 is coming up soon...

My grandparents(in their 70's at the time) sold their land in Santa Fe and bought a farm in Florida in preparation for Y2K. Got chickens, cows, and horses for post apocalyptic society. Grandpa built a water tower, a generator, and stored several thousand gallons of gasoline in old apple cider barrels in his barn. Y2K came and went, but that apple cider tainted gasoline destroyed every fuel injected vehicle they owned. Only the 1940's Ford Tractor and 1960's Ford pickup survived the Apple Cider Gasoline debacle of Y2K. *Update* 11/2020 I sent a screenshot of this to my cousin who actually lived close to my grandparents in florida, this is his reply: "LOL. Fucking Y2K. You know the story about New Years 2000 right? Grandpa was all locked, loaded and prepared for Y2K. Gold buried in the barn (not kidding we dug it up when they moved to Texas) and about 10-20 minutes after midnight a drunk driver struck a power pole on *Redacted* Road knocking out power to the whole area. Apparently Grandpa never talked about it, but you can just imagine. 😂"

Things like time-based authentication, file system timestamps, SSL certificates for websites, etc. all rely on incrementing timestamps. But Y2K was never going to be this massive apocalyptic event. As this video shows, it was blown _way_ out of proportion by the media and misunderstood by non-technical people. While everyone was busy freaking out and generating hype, engineers all over the world were silently and diligently getting things fixed. And thankfully, due to their work, nothing really happened in the end.

The best part of Y2K, is that no one, in any company’s IT department, ever thought, “why don’t we just try implementing this on a small-scale, shadow copy of the current system. Change the system’s clock and date settings and see just see what happens.” Think of all the time and money that could’ve been saved! But nope the basic task done before updating any programs on any system wasn’t thought of.

indeed. I worked on several systems that definitely would have failed had they not been fixed. While not systems that'd directly cost lives, at least one of them would have made communications a lot harder for emergency services had it gone down, and another would have caused a lot of people to lose their life savings had it failed (which traditionally causes an increase in suicide rates).
