Kirstie saying that was the best day of her life, and her win felt like an academy award. That’s a huge statement. It kind of floored me tbh. I suppose she was comparing herself to being a Tudor. But I get it. I did an archery shoot once at a medieval festival. I felt like Merida. It was glorious

You know you've watched too much Absolute History when you see spiral laces on clothes 30 seconds into the program and immediately go "oh, early Tudor period". (Edit: Technically the Tudor period started in 1485, so I was 13 years early in my guess. I still think that's pretty decent considering it was more than half a millennium ago and I guessed based on a doublet. 🤷♀️) I swear I'd have had better grades in my high school history classes if this channel had existed back then. But no, we had the wrestling coach telling us to read our textbooks while he planned for an upcoming match. I thought I hated history until I was in my 20s.

Loved this series - and Tony Robinson too, as always with his history/time team type programs. But with all the authenticity why are the women still wearing eye makeup? And at 11:53 was that a bit of aluminium foil I spotted? Kirsty - so much respect for her throughout the series, for her great attitude and resourcefulness, and also because she is e a rare Hollywood actress who has left her face to age normally. Also for Keith, the oldest of the men, who despite truly dodgy knees and back, keeps on keeping on, and even volunteers in one episode when the young guys are too tired, when he was exhausted himself, and in pain. Also stand out great attitude from the olympic long jumper. No time for the young weightlifter though, for reasons others have expressed. For all she began saying she'd give it her all, she never did. Goes to show that strength of character gets you further than physical strength for sure. Great series which I've recommended to my grandkids.

The medieval knights were the equivalent of the modern celebrity footballers. Just as half-wit, even more illiterate, and they used sharp blades instead of brutal tackles and did it much more frequently. And they got away even more easily with their violations of god's and human laws, especially if they ended up r[redacted]ing, raiding, robbing, crippling or murdering someone who didn't have equally powerful protector. Some of them even turned to becoming full-time rogues hunting merchants, travelers and even each other for monetary gain. There was little to admire about them, they had more to do with mafia hitmen than with chivalrous gentlemen. Except, again, favored by law rather than punished by it.

It always strikes me how in the book ‘ The Art of Courtly Love’ all these rules are laid out about the courtship of a lady....and then a chapter later the author recommends rape if she’s a peasant. Our perception of knights is coloured rather more by the Victorian’s than *themselves* I think.

@@theghostinthemirror8158 I think the problem is the manner in which this sorta Presentism commentary is done. It's always done with a very condescending holier-than-thou manner, conveniently ignoring that while we've certainly progressed as a society, these things *still* happen. More so, it's always done in a way that completely overlooks whatever positives may have come from what is being criticised. I've heard so much criticism about how Ancient Greece was sexist and racist and people always seem GLEEFUL to do that, conveniently overlooking the important positive things that came out of that time, as problematic as it is. Like that time period offended their mother. There is a big difference between thinking critically and recognizing problematic past attitudes that we can learn from and abolish in our time, and just being petty and nitpicky and preachy. This sort of stuff only serves to feed egos and puts off people from learning more about history, it makes people think that history is nothing but problematic and may refuse to study it with the care it deserves. They'll parrot what was wrong and offensive and not understand WHY it was that way and WHY and HOW we became better. It's hypocricy at its finest.
