I had a problem with intermittent starts for my 93 Honda Accord and after chasing that by replacing parts it came down to resoldering a small circuit board relay. The soldering joints had microscopic cracks due to hot and cold temperatures. I pulled the relay circuit board and although I couldn't visually see any problems, I resoldered all of the small soldering joints and that fixed the problem. It seems to be the little things that fix the BIG problems at times. Yeah, I'm all about maintenance for all of my tools. Thanks Jessie, that was a great video and I'm glad you shared it.

There is nothing wasted here, my friend. Part of the reason why I watch guys like you and Cody Wranglerstar is because you show puzzling something through even when it is hard. You've both inspired me to up my game when it comes to making old things work and work well. I've always had to make old things work, but I often didn't get to the work well point with them, and that is highly frustrating. I grew up on a farm where my stepfather preferred smoking pot to working, and nothing on our farm was ever in good working order. None of our vehicles had brakes, because of his temper. He would stomp brakes so hard he would burst the wheel cylinders and then he'd just leave them like that. I had to learn to downshift and then side swipe something low to stop, or put the bucket down on the tractor. We had one car that was fit to drive to town because mom was pretty much the only one who drove it. We spent far too much money keeping far too many vehicles around, because none of them worked right. We didn't have a way to sharpen tools, and we worked way too hard by being lazy. That isn't the way I want to live. I'm trying to get to where everything I have works and I can count on it. I'm not there yet, but I'm improving. Keep up the good work.

Easy fix if you own the equipment. You said you know it's that wire. Okay. Now run a bypass. Run a new wire from the top switch to the other switch down to the wire harness and put in an fuse in down by the wire harness. Eliminate that wire all together. Easy way to see if it will work is take out both switches. Make a quick wire lead to both switches and put in a fuse external hookup and plug it into the the wire connector down where it should go. Works, problem solved. Now just reroute. Hope it helps.

Jessie, a safe way of checking your circuit is to bridge out the fuse that keeps blowing with a 5 to 21watt lamp. If the short happens the lamp will illuminate as it will just use the path to ground (the short) as the ground for the lamp, it prevents using up your supply of spare fuses.

Ok you've made me offer you help. The problem your having with a wring harness is very common in older vehicles. Forget finding the exact spot of the short, Take and just replace the entire wire. Start at one end and go from connector to connector and put in a new wire, of course make sure you secure the new wire. Even if this issue is water this will cure the problem. Unless you have the hours and hours to tear apart the entire tractor and maybe by the time your baby graduates you'll find it. (LOL) Replacing the wire is the only way to fix it. BTW congrates on the new addition.

Jessie the video is not bad, as you are showing the reality of things. And the reality of things in this case is, that sometimes you have a problem that is frustrating because you cannot find it. And having worked on cars and things, I would tend to agree with you that you have a short somewhere that is resulting in an intermittent electrical problem. And here is the thing Jessie, you can always go in and put a bracket with a rubber grommet in to help reduce some of the potential rubbing on wires. But it might not hurt to buy a new wiring harness and replace the old one, as there seams like there is nothing else wrong with the tractor. cannot hurt, and all you are out is time, labor and the price of the new harness.

So often I wish my Dad was still alive when I watch your channel. My Dad was a plumber and heavy equipment operator. At one point he owned a dozen case backhoes. He was self-employed and he was constantly tinkering and working on stuff. He had no formal education past high school. When he passed away, everything mechanical in my Mom's life started breaking down, rather quickly. She replaced the gas dryer, the oven, the microwave, the water heater, and the engine on the tractor. She finally said there was nothing left to replace and everything was under warranty now. The next morning went to the garage and hit the button for the door...and the garage door went halfway up and fell off the tracks onto her car. Daddy had kept our world held together, seemingly with "duct tape and rubberbands". I learned a lot from him...but not enough to diagnose a backhoe problem. I have mad respect for what you all are doing. I see the haters correcting you in comments...but I'm here to say that I see you putting yourself out there to learn and try everything, sometimes fail, and try again, and eventually succeed. I loved this video. Good luck with the backhoe this season!

Simple trick. Take one of the old fuses and solder a 12volt tail light lamp across the tips of the fuse. This is a great way to locate shorts without wasting fuses. The low filament supplies about 1/2 amp and the high filament about 1.5 amps. By paralleling both high and low filaments you get a 2 amp resettable fuse.

Jesse, food for thought. I used to drive OTR. Having a freightliner over the road you run into issues. Driving in the rain i started to hear this hum. Then, i noticed that the washer pump was pumping windshield washer fluid. After many stops at the repair shops and being told i was crazy, a mechanic finally found the issue. The ECM is on the right side of the firewall on the engine side. It is housed in a box with a metal cover that has no seal other than a step in the metal cover. Low and behold, when it rained, the water would get behind the cover down onto the ECM. The water would ground out the pump as to turn it on. Some silicon on the lip of metal cover and never had issue again.

Replace the fuse with a circuit breaker that fits in your fuse block so you don’t go through so many fuses Once you figure it out then put a regular fuse back in. I would also just run a new wire temporarily to isolate different parts of the circuit. For example run a wire from your new connector to the front switch if the circuit breaker doesn’t pop that’s the part that’s bad if not then keep moving down the circuit until you find it.

A trick I use on problems like this, is to use a form of "Self Resetting Fuse" to diagnose the problem. I have an old 12V Headlight that I use for this. It gives a visual indication of the short, plus when shorted is still safely pushing current into the short. This is important as the voltage drop in the wires will cause the voltage away from the short to be higher than at the short. I have an RV that had a short in the house lights on the right side. Previous owners to "Fix This" just connected the left side to the right side (both sides with 10A fuses). Driving could blow both fuses.... or no problem at at! Finally parked it with the short still there, hooked up the headlight in place of the fuse (it lit up fully) and then checked the voltages on all the house lights. After just a few minutes, I could tell that the light just in front of the side door, and just behind it, were on either side of the short to ground. Pulling things apart I found not only a "Shiner" (isolation rubbed off of a wire) but also where they connected the left side to the right side. So fixed the shiner (caused by someone monkeying with the harness to add an alarm system), I removed the interconnect from left to right. So now I have no short... and if it does appears again, I'll only loose the lighting on the right side, not all the lights. And I know where to first look for the short.

Hi Jessie, That fault reminded me of a car my dad had years ago. It was a Riley with running bars, so you know how old it is, the front was all carved wood and all up the side was also carved. When he got it he heard a knocking noise, passenger front side, we had the wheel off the rack and pinion and wishbones all off and still we could not locate this noise. One day my brother came running in laughing his head off, he had been polishing the carving along the front of the passenger door and suddenly a bit moved and a little trap door opened and inside was a nut that had been making all the noise. We later found out that the little hatch was to keep a small toolset to help get the wheels off and there was a note in the manual telling you to wrap some cloth around the items to stop rattles.

Working on elevators for 40 years also teaching electronics and circuit tracing in the apprenticeship school. I was the guy you called when you couldn't find the problem. When dealing with an intermittent problem never move or touch anything until you are actually diagnosing the issue. Trust your meter it answers truthfully. Water is an enemy so put that machine under some cover. Unless it is completely water tight you can have those kind of issues. So replacing rubber boots and connectors that are cracked and brittle will prevent issues.

The wire connects to the solenoid right? The solenoid is on the back side of the coupler you replaced. The solenoid could be going bad. It is mechanical and could wear out. One other thing is that there could have been something metallic that was shorting but you took care of that when you blew it out.
@Burn3775 жыл бұрын
Keep in mind you don't need a short to blow a fuse, Poor connections such as corrosion from being wet/frayed wires at connectors etc can cause high resistance on both the live and ground side. These are generally the hardest thing to diagnose as you seem to have discovered :P I generally start with a resistance test.

I know there's a new boot on the button you replaced. What about the other lever? Also, what if you throw a ziplock bag over both levers to keep water from seeping into the buttons. At least until fixed. I know moisture will still creep in, however, mitigation isn't a bad thought. Also, some weather stripping along the floor panel may help keep the water from directly contacting that electrical.

Intermittents are a b*$ch! This was a GREAT video! I've had many pieces of equipment, and even a Duramax diesel 2500HD pickup truck that were put back in running condition just by wiggling a wiring harness. The main reason for this today is cost cutting. Back in the day, wires had nearly double the jacket thickness covering them, and not only that, the copper quality was much better. This same exact thing leaves alot of modern cars stuck on the side of the road. We're always taught to do all your testing before moving any harnesses under the hood for this exact reason - once you lose the problem, diagnosis is impossible. There's probably just a tiny part of one tiny strand of wire making contact to ground, either on the chassis, or through the ground wire like you said. If it's in the harness, sometimes it's easier just to run a new wire. As "backyard" as that sounds, sometimes even professionals have to do this in the interest of time for them, and money for the customer. NICE job, Jesse! You'd do great in this industry ... but, be glad you're not ... 😉 I enjoyed working on cars built before 1995. Some days, I wish I had become a dentist ... 😂

( 30 years repairing electronics ) IF you can identify the single wire in a loom that is bad - BUT you don't want to buy and replace the entire loom ( labor - time - effort - frustration makes it insane to do so ) THEN run ONE wire along that loom - and BYPASS that bad wire altogether. And zip tie the new single wire to the loom. And make sure it is new wire with good sheathing. And another trick - spray everything with WD-40 on a day you aren't going to be using it - and then allow to air dry. It displaces water - and prevents rust / corrosion. Even grease - dielectric or otherwise works. Or silicone. Tip # 2. Liquid electrical tape - in a can - IF you know- or suspect that you know where the "fray" exposed wire is. Tip # 3. Replace solenoid ( they're cheap and it might be it - intermittently acting up ) Tip # 4. Get a smartphone "endoscope / boroscope" device off eBay - for hard to reach areas ( inspection ) less than $ 12 Tip # 5. Keep it out of the weather or cover all the ( switch / loom ) areas with something - plastic tarps ? ( Build shed ? ) Tip # 6. Get an audible / wireless "short tester" off eBay - cheap as well. ( $ 12-25 ) And More Bugaboo !

I would start at the load; the clutch cut out solenoid. There should be a two-pin connector on the solenoid that can be unplugged. I would inspect the wires going into the solenoid for damage and frayed isolation. It seems that the fuse blows when you push the button on the cut-out switch, which would lead me to believe it is a load problem. Thank you I enjoy your videos not so much the music but enjoy seeing you have published a new video.

Intermittent failures are the worst thing to troubleshoot. The next worst thing is multiple failures in the same circuit. Think about looking at your grounds for corrosion and broken connectors. I worked military aircraft maintenance most of my life. Get you schematic out and mentally decide the circuit in half. Go to that mid point and try to narrow down the failure to one side of the circuit or the other. That will help isolate the failure. Continue to use the same technique to further isolate the failure. Sounds very logical, but you would be amazed on how many people just jump in without a troubleshooting plan.

This video is actually more educational than Jesse gives himself credit for. Take your time. Be patient. Take a break when you need it. Have a second set of eyes (or many in this case). Try the half-split method. Start right at the fuse panel itself where the fuses blow. Inspect how the wires connect to it. Disassemble the fuse panel and visually inspect it. You will see the true colours of the wires that is causing the fuse to blow. The second benefit to inspecting the fuse panel is seeing the direction those wires go in within the backhoe. I hope this helps.

Speaking from someone who has a kind of basic knowledge of electrical work, if you think you have found the problem area, try and disconnect the harness in two spots in the same line, and do a continuity check from one end of the harness to the other. That should narrow down to the section of harness that is giving you fits. If you have continuity, you know that section of harness is good. If you don't, then you have a short somewhere in that section.

If you buy a new one, get a heated cab and build a shed for it first ( shelter. ) 😊

The company I work for recently replaced a 2006 enclosed cab CAT 416C backhoe we had for a new 2019 enclosed cab 420F with AC, when I picked up, it had only 7 hours, we now have three 420 backhoes in our territory.

Our old machines get hauled away by a contractor and gets auctioned somewhere in the midwest, On the old 416C I replaced a bunch of hydraulic hoses, pins, changed all of the filters and fluids, new cabin filters, then the company decided to replace it about a month after I did all of that work.

Get a can of crc and spray all connectors switches and control lever on steering column, button switches. This is a water proof coating to keep dampness from corroding wires, Look for this corroding and lose connections. Modify any plastic covers to get better access to the loom.

move both levers that have the switches on them in all the various posistions and then try to press the buttons to see if you can get it to blow fuses..... maybe the wires are rubbing with the levers are in different posistions....

What suprises me is that you have not put up some kind of Shed to protect your equipment. Your more than overdue for something..
