With you 100% Jamie. I want my viewers to understand that what I say comes from a place of honesty. Anything else is advertising and they'd be paying me a shedload of money rather than simply sending me a box of plastic to review. The companies want honest feedback, my viewers want to know about any potential pitfalls and how to avoid them. To be fair, anyone who thinks I do otherwise is welcome not to watch, it isn't compulsory. I've told companies what I think, good and bad, yet they still send me stuff to review. If they expected anything else they wouldn't. My ultimate position is that, if these people think they can do better then it's easy enough to start a KZbin channel with a smartphone. But I, like you Jamie, know that what we do comes from a place of integrity and honesty and there is no point in anything else. Good to have a rant now and then, and keep the content coming mate, loving what you do!

Another aspect that I see in this context is the possibility of bit rose-colored bias stemming from the sheer excitement of a new kit or a new subject. To me that would be a far more likely explanation than the quest for freebies. Thanks for taking the time to engage with this topic and also sharing your experience

You are spot on Jamie. As a former journalist I am no stranger to that kind of warped thinking - “ohh you gave it a good review because they’re an advertiser for the paper you work at.” But no point arguing with such ppl, they believe what they want to believe. Was expecting far worse for a rant to be honest haha! I agree with what you say Jamie, and I imagine a lot of the criticism that people pipe up with either comes from a place of jealousy based on an erroneous illusion that print/video modellers get lots of money and free stuff (the vast majority don't); or, they have a pre-conceived notion towards a company or specific kit that then gets trotted out regardless if it is right or wrong. I think the vocal minority need to take a step back sometimes and just remind themselves what it is they get so worked up over. It is a hobby, where no-one forces you to do anything. If you don't like something, either try to give constructive criticism where it matters, or, if that isn't possible, then just don't buy it. It really is quite simple! There's far bigger issues in the world and this is most people's escape from it, drama just isn't necessary at all and a bit of perspective would go a long way!

It is like doing an appraisal of someone at work. You need to be honest and point out areas where performance can be improved but also where someone has done well. Reviews should be like that. Constructive criticism is fine. If there are issues with a kit it is better to know and be prepared than find out later.

Nicely done Jamie. The hardest thing for any reviewer must be to keep the language of the criticism constructive. Throwing your hands up in the air and screaming this is the worst thing ever molded never makes the design team strive to perform better in the future. Maybe people misunderstand or confuse constructive criticism for seeming to brush something under the carpet to keep those freebies coming. Anyway, keep up the great work with the channel. Yeh thats an odd one. it assumes reviewers are machines, they aren't they are normal people just like everyone else so a review will always be subjective and dependant on a point of view which will largely be based on the reviewers personal tastes which is a good thing. I always assume the reviews I see are fair and unbiased. The way I approach it is not to assume there is bias but to listen to what is said in context. What I mean by this is if someone loves rivet detail for example (mentioning no names eeek) and they suggest a kit lacks this feature I don't take it as a negative I listen to what else they have to say and use this to inform my decision, as at this moment in time with my skill set rivets are the least of my worries. I'm rambling now but if you look at the work a reviewer has done and you draw on the positives they say you should get a good overall opinion of the kit. We aren't really in an age where we can pop in to a shop and open up a box to have a peak so a channel or magazine with a review saves wasting time and money and as such is a valuable resource. just because two reviewers may come up with different conclusions it doesn't mean there is a bias, more that they are approaching it from there own personnel tastes and skill sets so lets not be critical of people who are devoting a considerable amount of there spare time to help us

The least enjoyable aspect of this hobby is what I call "the red line brigade". It seems like ten seconds after a pretty desirable kit comes out, there's a post somewhere with a rivet counter's whine about some contour being wrong - and here's the red line on a photo to prove it. Mostly I don't care!

Never understand the whingeing about kits. If you don't like it, don't buy it? If your not happy with it, start up your own company and do better. This is one of the reasons I got off of FB, my mental health is much better for it. The hobby is supposed to be fun. Reading a magazine review is just a guide in my opinion anyway, gives you some insight in to a kit.

Of course one can never speak for EVERYONE, but MOST youtube "reviewers" will say whatever it takes to keep the free stuff coming. Hell, that is what brings them to start youtubing. That and the money they make if successful. Smaller channels especially love the freebies. Say whatever you want, but it is simple human nature to be loyal to your supplier, even if subconsciously. The only way to gain my trust is to pay for the stuff yourself. I do enjoy watching all the videos, even the "reviews" of free stuff, but I see it as entertainment. Those youtubers should just admit it is just that, entertainment, and stop pretending to be doing some public service. It is just for fun. BTW, your audio is hollow sounding. You may need sound dampening.

Does not sound like a rant to me. I think this minority is always going to have something to complain about. If Takom releases a new tooled piece of armor, why didn’t they do this variant. The Borders Lancaster...too expensive, too big. The Kotare Spitfire...why no engine...not worth it without the engine. You're right, l think they are operating from a point of minimal knowledge. These companies, at the end of the day, have to turn profit. Research, tooling, design are not cheap. Add the recent supply chain issues, the war in Ukraine, and let's not forget our friend COVID 19. All factors that add to costs. I guarantee, if Kotare had done an engine for the Spitfire, that would have added at least $50.00 to the cost. That would cut into sales and profit. Reviewers like yourself, Nigel, etc may get things for "free" but l've yet to hear you kissing up or glossing over issues with the product. I think that prods the manufacturer to make improvements. Case in point...Borders ME-109 vs their Stuka. Are their kits l want to see done...absolutely but they have to be profitable to the manufacturer and a desire in the market. I will say this...the one thing that goes up me sideways is when a company re-boxes a kit that was crap when it was initially released. I am sorry but a new set of decals doesn't improve inaccuracies or poor fit. Keep up the good work

It's a bit weird - this sphere of a hobby isn't like the automotive world, where the brown nosing is still very much a thing. Press trips used to be ceased for the influencers that didn't give glowing reviews of a car maker's latest products. Model companies by comparison, are probably just happy their products are getting publicity that they aren't needing to pay for. At the end of the day, model kits are still buildable even if they're not perfect.
