Thanks for the shout-out, but especially because you continue to explore Nightwish's music. A beautiful analysis of the composition, this is your strong point, and I'm glad you do this, because you do it on the understanding of those of us (like me) who do not have a formal education in this field. As for the list of songs - there is no mandatory order to follow, maybe at the aesthetic level at most. Stylistic diversity is one of my criteria, plus good audio and video quality, for the band's most successful songs. I am convinced that you will find a good balance in time, also listening to the suggestions of the fans, sometimes perhaps more appropriate. The song is dedicated to imagination and storytelling, seen through the prism of innocent childhood, the lyrics including references to some of the most famous stories. Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland are explicitly mentioned. I await with great curiosity your next steps in this exploration!

Thing with Nightwish is that they are a band dedicated to the music. Everyone does their part, no more no less. That's why Emppu is very underappreciated guitarist since everyone is used to metal guitarists being up front and center. Nightwish is a machine that performs perfectly.

Hello I have some info on Floor Jansen for you here. She is married to Hannes Van Dahl, drummer of the Swedish power metal band Sabaton. Together they have 2 daughters (Freja & Lucy) Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 3 octaves (C3 to F6). Re-singing style ranges from opera to screams and grunts. She usually sings in English, in addition she has also sung songs in Dutch, German, Spanish, Finnish, Latin, Italian and Swedish. Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she cool singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016. From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020. Greetings from the Netherlands.

Marco exclusively uses Warwick Bass models, most often either the Vampyre or Buzzard. He's using the Buzzard here. When he needs a standard guitar he switches to an Infinity / Panthera double neck Tuomas once summarized Stoorytime, which is inspired by the 1982 movie "The Snowman" this way: "How would it feel to take a midnight flight with a snowman through the most wonderful landscape, like in the classic Yuletide film? The meaning of our very existence is created through stories, tales and imagination. They are at the very core of humanity" The lyrics themselves don't bring up The Snowman, but flow through storytelling, referencing Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland. It's central to the Album, Imaginarium which sticks to a central theme of storytelling and the imagination

This is hopefully brief but helpful background - from Wikipedia - "Nightwish is a Finnish symphonic metal band from Kitee. The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen, guitarist Emppu Vuorinen, and former lead singer Tarja" Tuomas and Emppu are the only remaining original members. The band has had only 3 lead singers in its history and only 2 drummers as of 2020. The two videos you have reacted to so far are from the Wacken open air heavy music festival held in Germany. At the time of recording in 2012 Floor was not even an official member of the band. She had taken over mid tour when the previous vocalist left. Floor was made an official part of the band in 2013. Tuomas is known as the "metal Mozart" in addition to being the keyboardist he is also the primary composer for the band. You guessed correctly in your first reaction that the symphonic instruments are in fact played from prerecorded tracks. The band works with the London Symphony orchestra and chorus. The drummer has a click track on his in-ears in order to keep the whole band in sync with the track. Welcome to the world of Nightwish!
@teckreactions

I would expect everyone to be on a click for a concert this size. Also a must for tracks. Thanks!
@ecbftl
@ecbftl 3 ай бұрын
@teckreactions I think they all are on a click track, but I think each member has a custom in-ear mix. There is a gear Gods video where the dedicated Nightwish tech team (aka Crewish or previously unemployed blacksmiths) reviews the stage gear setup and instruments from 2015.
@teckreactions
@teckreactions 3 ай бұрын
@@ecbftl That sounds right. They would all have to be on a click and tracks to make this production work. Each musician has a certain preference. My personal in-ear mix has CLICK as the highest, DRUMS next, LEAD GUITAR and BASS next, PIANO, and the vocals panned to where they're standing. I usually like my in-ears to sound like an album HA!

Tuomas (they keyboardist) writes all their songs and more than any other songwriter writing modern music the term "composer" very much applies. His compositional skills are among the best you can find anywhere. He writes the lyrics too. You'll notice recurring themes of a man who forever remained a child on the inside, someone who is too pure for this world, there's a lot of emphasis on this idea that the poetic and childlike are the best among us but the world is designed to tear them apart. One of my favorite things about Nightwish is the fact that Tuomas is VERY much so writing about himself in those cases. There's an extra level of emotion because it's clear this band is at least in part the way Tuomas processes things. His innermost emotions are put on display for all.

Storytime is from the 2011 Imaginaerum album, recorded with 2nd lead singer Anette Olzon , she has more of a pop/rock style. The operatic part near the end was done solely with the choir on the studio version, as operatics aren't in Anette's wheelhouse. Floor has taken over, or joined in , on the operatic parts that Anette didn't do. Themes of stories and childhood innocence are themes that Tuomas (keys/primary songwriter) likes, also he's a fan of Disney and composer Hans Zimmer. Yes, the drums are just right, all the instruments are just right. They all play just what is needed for the song. Yes, Marko is a Warwick artist. Empuu plays ESP, a custom EV-1, based on the Horizon model. Jukka played Tama drums. Tuomas plays Korg keyboards. Current drummer Kai plays Pearl drums. Troy , whom you haven't met yet, plays everything, lol, PRS guitar, pipes , whistles, bouzouki. You don't need to follow Gabriel's list in order, feel free to pick any song that you want. Using his links for whatever you pick is recommended though. When you want to meet Troy, suggest "I Want My Tears Back", live from the Buenos Aires 2018 concert, you'll also meet Kai there.

6:56 The story of Storytime is very much based around the 1982 movie "The Snowman." Nightwish did a cover of the main song, "Walking in the air" for the Oceanborn album waaaaaaaaay back, but Tuomas always wondered what a modern day "fairy tail metal" song would sound like, as he is very much aware of how tales, stories, and imagination are all interconnected. There really isn't a cohesive story per se in the lyrics, as the song instead refers to the wonderment of imagination in creating stories, hence the references to Gaia, Peter Pan, the "child-man" (Tuomas himself) sitting by a fire and looking into his heart for the story he wants to tell. It's a "meta" song if ever Nightwish had one that could be laballed as such, as it's about everything and nothing all at once.

Yes there is a reason for the order of the songs for sure. These first few show the different sides to the band and the different styles. For example Ghost Love Score is from the Tarja era and is a more old school sound of the band while Storytime was written with Anette in mind and was more in the pop style. If you are following the list I bet Romanticide is the next one up and that one is more Metal than the first two. The list also helps you build up to the most personal songs in their catalogue. I believe you need to take these first steps in order to fully appreciate songs like The Poet and the Pendulum or Dead Boys Poem. By the way Dead Boys Poem is my favorite Nightwish song.

My previous comment was short as I had to rush out - something along the lines of welcome and buckle up!! I greatly appreciate people like you who can break things down musically but also being super positive with it. I'm 56 and taking into account that I've seen many bands over 40 years including the greatest of all time - I'm almost ashamed to say that I only found Nightwish in 2020 due to the pandemic. I was lucky enough to see them a year and a half ago here in London. On a personal note I lost my Uncle to Covid and my Wife lost an Uncle too and Nightwish got me through that difficult time (along with a Japanese band called Babymetal - greatly misunderstood - some of the best musicians in the world!!) and I kid you not, there has not been a day in 4 years that I haven’t listened to Nightwish - and I'm very fussy about music. I come from a musical Family, my Father played the piano and had his own big band in the 50's. My Brother is a music teacher and myself and other 2 Brothers sing! A bit longer than my ghost love score reply. Apologies 😊 But do stick with Nightwish - they really are the real deal. Take care.. David 😊

After a long time I came to the GHIST LIVE SCORE on this show with FLOOR JANSEN. I did not know that they had 3 singers for all these years. I said wait it is not the singer I saw on TV. Let's check this out. And I was sitting with my jaw dropped during the all performance that time. FLOOR is a TREASURE. And she needs to be protected as the all greatest treasures of the world. Where much music (metal or other) can tend to be formulatic (guitar riffs and drum solos) Nightwish is anything but. Everyone does what is needed without having to be the “star”. Floor may be the front person and perceived as the star but she totally realizes and appreciates that it is the presence of all of them performing together at the very highest level that creates the Nightwish vibe and excellence. The juxtaposition of her insane range and presence and this bands hard hitting insane talent is incredible Absolutely kickass. This song is from their Imaginaerium album, a concept album based on an old composer on his death bed relieving the memories of his life. One of Tuomas's favorite topics or themes in his music is lost innocence. As a poet and artist Tuomas values the sense of wonder and imagination that innocent children have. In Storytime the composer is remembering the joy he got from childhood tales, thus the references to Peter Pan and Alice in Wonderland (Tuomas often uses literary references in his lyrics and as inspiration for songs). It is through these childhood stories that we discover ourselves and who we are (I am the story that will read you real). Song is inspired by a popular British animated Christmas movie The Snowman. Storytime was born when Tuomas wondered why no-one had made a remake of the film, and pondered on what his version of the score to the scene in which "Walking in the Air" plays would sound like. To quote Tuomas "How would it feel to take a midnight flight with a snowman through the most wondrous landscapes, like in the classic animated Yuletide film? The meaning of our very existence is created though stories, tales and imagination. They are at the very core of humanity." Walking on the Air is a very popular Christmas song in the UK and Finland and Nightwish did a beautiful cover of it with their first singer Tarja that is worth reacting to.

You mean Also sprach Zarathustra, from 2001 A Space Odyssey. I first ran across that song on the CD "Classics at the Movies." This song is about the stories we grew up with, so our imagination. Every Nightwish song is a new story. They are so talented, and so many different sounds. They do not make any bad songs that I have ever heard. This song was about stories, like Peter Pan, Alice in Wonderland, and Frosty the Snowman. It is how stories can take ahold of you and transport you to other places, and how you should embrace and remember the journeys they took you on. You have started your Nightwish journey so there is a little story about how they started working with Pip Williams when they made the Once album. Ghost Love Score can be found on the album. Pip Williams played a big role on all of Nightwish's (and also Tuomas' solo album) albums 2004-2020. Here's a clip from their book and timeline is year 2003-04: ---------------------- From the very start, Tuomas had a strong feeling that Once had to have an orchestra, come what ever may. After finishing the recording of backing tracks, the process continued in London with the legendary producer Pip Williams at the helm. Known for his work for the likes Status Quo and Uriah Heep, Williams was responsible for the orchestrations on the album. When the Nightwish guys heard what orchestra they would be working with, their jaws hit the floor. "As Ewo and I traveled to London at the end of November to meet Pip Williams, we had no clue about the orchestra he'd gotten for us", Tuomas says. "The only thing we knew was that Williams himself would do the arrangements and that through his connections, he would hook us up with an orchestra and a choir. The first time we visited Phoenix Sound Studio, Rick Wakeman (the keyboard player of the legendary progressive rock band Yes) opened the door for us. That's when we realized we're onto something big. As we were having coffee in the studio, Pip dropped the bomb: the orchestra in question had played on The Lord of the Rings, as well as on many other Hollywood soundtracks - all recorded in this studio!" It seems that Pip Williams wanted only the best for a band he held in great respect. "I have followed the band for some time, and it's been interesting to see how they have developed. Of course Rock bands like Deep Purple have previously used orchestras, but I really feel that Nightwish have combined the best of both worlds most successfully. They are a classic Metal band with strong classical and movie-score influences in their music." "It was important for me that it would not be just about over-dubbing a few orchestral parts on top of a Rock band", Williams continues. "Tuomas' compositions were brilliant also in the sense that choir and orchestra could be added naturally, so that they don't sound pretentious or contrived. This is of utmost importance. The songs must be structured so as to allow the orchestra enough space. In the end, the results were quite emotive. Also, let us not forget just how good all the musicians in Nightwish are. They are perfectly sympathetic to Tuomas' vision. And Tarja's (1st lead singer) wonderful voice has done the songs great justice." Williams knew his orchestra well. "I have worked with most of the players on different sessions for many years. Gavin Wright is a sensitive and authoritative orchestra leader, and together with Isobel Griffiths, the orchestral contractor, we were able to secure just the right musicians for each song. Anthony Pleeth, who has the lead cellist and played solo cello on 'Kuolema tekee taiteilijan', is one such example. These guys have done many, many big movie scores, as have the wonderful Metro Voices choir, and I thought this project required the kind of grandiose performance one would find on movie soundtracks by, say, Howard Shore." Tuomas could not have been more excited about the situation. "Using the orchestra was an earthshaking experience. I only had to lie on the studio couch for two days, listening to these amazingly talented people. During the first takes, someone said into the mike, 'Are these guys really serious?'. When we began 'Ghost Love Score', a positive kind of bewilderment took over the orchestra. That, as well as 'Dark Chest of Wonders', were the first ones we recorded." Williams was equally happy with his orchestra. "These musicians are such brilliant sight readers that it wasn't necessary to do more than a couple of rehearsals. Then we'd have a take or two of each song. It all went very smoothly. After the takes, I would check that Tuomas was happy, and then we would move on. If there was anything he wanted changed, it would be dealt with in a very short time. I must say, however, that we had prepared very well - I had been constantly on the phone with Tuomas when I was writing the arrangements. Yes, I ended up making a huge phone bill! But the groundwork paid off, as only a few small alterations were necessary." Tuomas and Pip Williams immediately hit it off on a personal level. "Tuomas is sensitive, caring, very observant - he's what the English call a musical sponge", Williams commends. "It means he is always willing to try new ideas and absorbs the musical influences around him like a sponge. Tuomas always wants to learn more about music, its origins and sound. He has very firm ideas of what he is trying to achieve, but he also leaves space for those working with him to express themselves. He is humble, appreciative and approachable, one of the most talented musicians or composers I have ever worked with. I really think he would make an original and effective movie score composer, and I definetely want to collaborate with Tuomas again in the future - in fact, we're already talking about the next venture. I would also love to collaborate with him on a movie score at some point." "Many times the players would come into the control room afterwards to listen to the takes, and according to Pip, that's something that doesn't happen very often," Tuomas says. "They're usually not that interested - they just do their job and leave, but now they actually listened to the songs. At the end of the last day, as I went down to thank the orchestra, they started applauding, standing up from their seats. It was one of those great moments in life." According to Williams, a Pop or Rock artist rarely receives a standing ovation. "The musicians respected the quality of the songs and the challenge of playing such intricate and well structured music. You must remember that these guys also do simple pop sessions, songs that are very easy to play. With Nightwish, they were able to play stuff that was often as demanding as many of the classical pieces they had trained on. This was so much more than just simple 3-chord songs in 4/4 time. And let's not forget that they also had great respect for people that were prepared to take such a huge musical and financial risk, all for the sake of art! Remember, these were very expensive sessions. I'm very satisfied with my own reward for the arrangements, too." "There is alwas a degree of compromise when mixing a Metal band with a large orchestra, as it's such a huge sound, but all in all, I'm really pleased with the end result", Pip reflects. "The main thing is that we have established a great identity with Nightwish and the orchestra, and our cooperation could be even better in the future. Seriously, Once is one of the most enjoyable projects in my career, and I've done this for 35 years!"

Great reaction again and welcome to the Nightwish Army. Be prepared to be amazed on each Nightwish song, as there is not one like the other. Enjoy and we will be with you all the way.

The bass player Marco is playing a Warwick vampire bass. He also has a Warwick Buzzard and a double neck with a Warwick bass on top and a Framus acoustic on the bottom.

thanks for coming back to Nightwish so soon! I enjoyed your reaction (again), it shows you have a thorough musical background :) You made me chuckle when trying to pronounce Zarathustra though (sorry) I love the fact that it doesnt matter how often you listen to a Nightwish song, it will still invoke the same reaction (or stronger) as the very first time. It really never gets boring! I am already looking forward to your next one, keep up the good work, sir!

Heya from Germany - I want to see your face reacting to DIMASH KUDAIBERGEN SINGING " OGNI PIETRA" from the Arnau Concert on his own channel. This guy has an 7 octave range and he is trained since the age of 5 years old. Never heard a voice like this. The song was composed for him and I am pretty sure nobody else is able to sing it in this beautiful way. ☀️ All the best from Germany 🇩🇪 Petra

Mate, I'm with you on that, in all my years of listening to incredible music, I hardly know the complete lyrics to any song. Like you, I am too busy listening to the arrangement, the chords, the musical fabric of the song. However, I totally appreciate the instrument that is Floor's voice (not forgetting the amazing Marko!).

Just look up the lyrics and it is self explanatory. Remember this is the Imaginaerum tour. This goes with Dark Chest of Wonders talking about stories and tales. As you noted Floor is a perfect front person for the band, truly captivating.

I had the lyrics on. It was not self explanatory. I have literally no context going in to these.

Fun fact, Floor has an older sister who is also a rather good singer too. They do duets occasionally, and neither of them disappoint.
