I remember about 20 years or so ago. We had a bad ice storm here in central Oklahoma. All power, phones and internet was gone for a couple weeks. We didn’t have much for food. So I slipped slid to the store that was open. And of course it was cleaned out. We had no water since we’re on a water well. It was a real eye opener!! I vowed to never be caught unaware again. Because of channels like yours I’m prepared. Tornados I really can’t do much, but if I survive I will be able to help other people out. Food, water I’ve got. Thanks for helping keep me motivated to be ready.

I hate it when we get a heavy shower then the sun comes out Brite. So humid you can sell the air by the slice!!! The blizzard of 93, power was out over a week. Trees like you said, sounded like a war zone. My friend and I had to walk on each side of the roads so the power company truck could know where the ditches were.

I remember growing up in Hollywood,Fla. We would get hurricane maps from the newspaper and hang them on the refrigerator. We would get coordinates from WINZ 560 AM, and plot the storms path on the map.

I am used to observing the weather patterns where I am. Storms usually travel a certain direction southwest to northeast, following the direction of the Appalachian mountains I live in. Sometimes one jumps the pattern in the valley I live in and comes in from the south east and they are always massive and destructive. Hope you all tay safe through this storm season, it looks like it’s going to be a wild one. Just yesterday canned a bushel of half runner beans, some with taters (po-ta-tos) and doing more tomorrow. It’s storm season and canning season, people!

Well said Oste.. the majority of our weather also comes out of the southwest, from the area around New Orleans out in the Gulf.. good luck with your canning..! 🐻

After 3 years of summer drought we haven't had a week without rain since April. Sometimes it rains all week. People need to realize this when they plan to live off their gardens. Stew as well as chili goes well over rice. Pretty much like meat gravy over noodles. It stretches how far meals go. As the old folks use to say stock up on your staple foods so you can make it through tough times. That's what the old timers took west with them.

Guys, I've told you before I was in the US Army for 20 years. I spent time at Ft Gordon, Georgia several times. In the early 80s, while I was there, there was about 4 to 6 inches of snow with ice on top of it. I was living in Harlem, GA, and my buddies next, and I got up and headed for Post. When we got there, we were informed that the post was closed, and we were released to go back home. We went to the Chow hall and ate. Then, we did some running around there in Augusta. We were in my 4-wheel drive pickup with a camper shell that had a lot of weight in the in the bed. Also, all of us grew up in Missouri, Indiana, or Ohio, so snow and ice wasn't anything new to us. I heard some of the locals complaining about the snow and ice. I ask one how they drove on the dry sand that was always on the asphalt roads. He looked at me like I was crazy because everybody knew how to drive on sand. Then it dawned on him what I meant. He went out driving and came back to the diner all smiles, and didn't say a word to anyone. In 5 minutes he learned how easy it could be to drive on snow and ice, a little thought and some weight in the back. Take care. Ken Billings

Ken, I really enjoy when folks share their stories here.. they are always fun to read and contain outstanding lessons. Your story is no exception.. I love the way you taught that man to do something he never knew he was capable of.. driving on sanded roads in an "ice storm". Awesome job sir. Thanks again for sharing.. 🐻

Please do not refrigerate bread and bread products. The temperature in a fridge is just right for water to form condensate and the bread will absorb the water, hence soggy bread. Freezers keep the humidity quite low so bread and bread products are just fine for a couple of months. The best way to deal with it, in my own probably ignorant view, is to store flour, yeast, and powdered whole milk (yes this is a thing) in the freezer. Then get a camp/emergency oven set up, store the compatible fuels of your choice, and make bread while enjoying the surplus heat in a cold event, depending on the fuels you are using, I am partial to alcohol and isobutane as fuels for winter emergencies, though for breads using a Dutch oven in a pit with burning embers has its charms.

A valid point Patrick.. personally I've never had any problems with moisture in the fridge.. the freezer storage is a necessity in my home. My grandparents built it literally a hundred years ago. It's not very well insulated and gets warm in the summer. Storage in the cooler environments is a necessity to prevent spoilage..

Take Care and Stay Safe during these up coming storms. I live on a place called the Peninsula in VA in a city called Hampton. I know your weather conditions and more. The Peninsula sets between the James River and the Chesapeake Bay, then the lower is open to the ocean where these converge. We get wild weather here. It can snow on one side and the other get nothing. Storms travel any direction at times. I don't even want to think of another hurricane here, but I have some stuff prepared. When buying rice for the first few days of an emergency without water, get the Minute or instant rice or noodles. It will use less water to cook, but it isn't as good as standard rice. I learned how to cook rice with my emergency stoves in a rice cooker I got for camping. Do the same before so you know how much fuel you might need for a stove. Get water tight containers, if you can afford them, for all dry foods. (Old Mason jars work wonders.) Always wash off cans or containers before opening them if they have been in or around flood water. (Actually, do this always with the stuff that can get on them.) Practice what you might have to do, is my motto. My grandparents and momma taught me well and I try to get others to do the same. I always try to buy extra of something I like to eat. I even bought camping meals this time to last 20+ years. A first for me. Take Care and Stay Safe to all.
