A number of years ago, we took in two dogs that had mobility issues. We had a paralyzed Irish Wolfhound (paralyzed in his back end; not an easy task caring for a paralyzed 180-pound dog!) and a Great Dane that had been hit by a car (before he came into our rescue group) and had had a spinal injury--he could walk, just not normally--he kind of goose stepped and fell a lot. We had a ramp built for those two and that made a huge, huge difference for them (and for us). Don't know how you'd feel about installing a ramp, but that could make a big difference for Maxxie (assuming you could get him to use it!!).

My dog is 16 and the stairs are a big focus, be cautious if he is starting to lose sight or hearing. My dog has vertigo and has even fallen in our pool, so I have to keep my eyes on him every bathroom break. Enjoy your fur baby for the journey they have walked along side of us is their joy ❤

Yes…the pool can be a hazard for elderly dogs. My sister in law’s 14 year old chihuahua had lost a lot of her sight. Somehow she escaped and went outside without her knowing, and fell into the pool. She ended up drowning.😢
@GenericAccountVLRАй бұрын
The dogs would more readily accept treads which are just indoor-outdoor carpeting. The holes in the ones you have, are likely deterring the pups; they could break a toe or claw. Mine had same issue. They took right to the carpeted stairs, though. Gives them grip and certainty, and their little paws don’t get caught in the spaces of treads. Because there are no spaces. :)
@dianebaum5194Ай бұрын
I agree. Going to catch a toe . Could break a knee or hip .
@torigillispie9823Ай бұрын
Renee, just a suggestion, either get more black step things and cover all the steps, or I would cover all the steps with outdoor carpet, it’s a good thing to keep Maxie from slipping and humans from slipping. As we ( as well as dogs) get older, those stairs could be a hazard, just my 2 cents.

We trained our little Schnau to go up and down dog stairs by putting treats on the steps, and a little later just holding the treat out as a lure. High-end ribeye works the best! It took a few days for him to choose that instead of jumping off the bed, but now he knows. Maxxie is so adorable. I’m always hoping to get a glimpse of him.

Love the new vents, so cool. We don’t have those in the Uk 🇬🇧, we have wall radiators…and it’s super annoying… because having those on the walls means there’s less wall space for furniture display. If you are lucky enough…. Your home will have underfloor heating. If it’s a new home, posher home, or if doing a renovation. Years ago my fridge freezer, the rubbers on the inside were white… after a few years those became stained, no matter how much I cleaned it!….to much of my annoyance. When I replaced the fridge freezer I made sure the rubbers were all black. I thought I was amazingly clever…. But actually…. These can be bought on its own and changed too. Now I know for the future. 😅 When I buy big items for my home…. I do intensive research, hate buying to throw away faster than needed. So I tend to wait and wait until I’m happy with the item that I found. Sometimes I put things in the cart and leave it…. If a week or two later I still feel that I need it, I’ll get it, otherwise I won’t, stops me from impulse buying anything 😂😂.

I see that Pollux and Lola are getting closer. So good to see. When my dogs got older I actually had to build them a ramp, not that I’m suggesting you build a ramp but I put outside carpet on it and they never slipped on that. Of course, you could buy two more sets and cover the steps completely because I’m pretty sure at his age he is not going to change his ways.

Love your pups, and so appreciate your care in making steps safer for your senior to live his best life. I had a similar situation and found some non-slip tape that i ran across the whole step. Your option is much more attractive. I love the joy you had in the first pee on the walk! You are resonating with a lot of dog owners here. We've had both: dogs who want an audience, and like yours, dogs that took a LONG time to be willing to do it in front of you. Great job Dog-Mom!

oh girl, can I relate? I have three dogs that belong to my granddaughter in the house all day long with me. I have had exactly the same experiences with mine. In fact I’ve gotten to wear. I send mine outside and shut the door on the deck so that they can go in the backyard and don’t let them in when they’re horsing around like that. I just tell him to get out of the house for that, just like they were kids horsing around in the house. LOL can I relate? I can’t wait to see that video where you have that special thing, if it works.😊

Renee, thanks for showing us how to change the front door weather stripping. Regarding Maxxie and those black mats, although a great idea and lovely looking, that cut out style is uncomfortable for a pet. I have a large cut out mat at my back and front doors. My cat of 13 years refuses to walk on them. She too will walk around them. It's the cut out pattern that is disturbing. We like the pattern but to ask our pet to step in it with a little paw, is asking too much. Try a solid mat, no cut out pattern, for Maxxie. Like us folks reaching our 70s, our joints are getting arthritic (harder to bend) and our eye sight is not as sharp (to focus on a cut out when dashing). Happy holidays to you and your precious family.❤

Good Morning Renee! I look forward to Vlogmas every morning. I am going to miss it, once it is over. But, you will probably be relieved to NOT have to vlog every day. LOL! One of my dogs...when he was a senior...I was carrying him down & up the stairs near the end of his life. I live in a bi-level house...and it was just too much for him...and I didn't mind. I have always had small dogs. He was healthy til the end of his life. But, near the end...in his 11 1/2th year...I had to do that. He loved his backyard regardless. We love our sweet fur-babies to their last days....and because I loved him..I didn't mind doing that. :)

We are having colder weather here than usual. We blaming it on the hurricane that came through in September and tore everything up. We are still cleaning up and repairing and will be for months, possibly up to a year here in Evans, Grorgia and the entire Augusta area. There just isn't enough carpenters or tree and lawn workers to go around. We just had some more trees cut down yesterday that were damaged. Insurance does not cover this so a lot of people will not be able to take care of it. Our neighbor's huge pine fell and tore a big section of of our fence down and hit our car and truck. Guess what? Insurance does not cover so we had to pay for those too. Our insurance company rep told us they are going out of business in January so we have to get a new one. The insurance adjusters told us they have never seen worse damage. We didn't have the flooding like western N.C. only wind although we had 15 inches of rain.

My oldest dog is nine. He used to hit the top step off our back porch and jump down the rest. We’ve been here over four years. He now goes down a few steps before he jumps the rest of the way. But I have a plastic planter on my back porch. So if he doesn’t feel like going down the steps, he will pee on it. Then we have to clean it off. We have a transom window in our master bathroom that I know has some kind of hole in it. But we’re not sure how to get to it. We have lady bugs come in all winter long. It’s over the bathtub and up towards the ceiling. So it’s still there. And the lady bugs are starting to come in. Which when I find them I just flush them down the toilet. So now they’re in our septic tank if they go down alive.

Hi Renee..a suggestion for your steps. Why not get the long grip strips that stick on and put two on each step along the whole width? I think you can get them in a color close to your steps. I'm not sure what this says about me, but I'm able to tune out dogs playing when I'm trying to do something. Perhaps it was my time in graduate school (in the 1980's--noise-cancelling headphones didn't exist back them). I had dogs and I had to study; I wasn't willing to get rid of the dogs and I wasn't willing to drop out of school, so I learned to tune out the play noise. That worked well, too, because if I heard something that wasn't playing, I could see what was going on immediately. I think you'd find you habituate to the noise pretty quickly (habituation in "learning theory terms") means that you tune something out and don't even "hear" it any more because you don't pay any attention because it isn't pertinent. It's like the hum of an appliance. You don't really "hear" it while it's running. Now if it starts making a really strange noise, you're going to "hear" that, but if it's operating correctly, you don't "hear" it.
