I also have speakers with 15" woofers (Marantz). They just have a smoother vib. The 5" mids are great but what really blows my mind is how clear and detailed the 3" paper tweeters are behind the reflection manifold. They are as crisp and clear but sweeter than my titanium tweeters and silk tweeters. I keep my sub gain low enough that it just enriches the bottom but doesn't draw attention to itself. Usually, that is around 1/4 on the dial.

@@keplermission4947 I don't think you've understood what was being discussed. It's high db/ watt meter sensitivity (SPL) and low excursion (Xmax). This results in a controlled frequency response (relatively linear) and an extremely fast impulse response (fast reactions to dynanix swings in music), pretty much the opposite of what you've described. The added benefit is extremely low powered amps (1 watt even) can drive this type of setup, this type of speaker demonstrates extremely low levels of distortion (woofer noise) and it sounds incredible, real, magical especially when driven by valves 😃.
@MusicLover-01
@MusicLover-01 2 жыл бұрын
@@keplermission4947 I will caveat that I am no expert, but you actually need an incredibly powerful magnet (high Tesla), if ferrite it would usually be large and heavy, neodymium can be smaller and more compact. The power rating of the voice coil however needs be be fairly low (fewer windings) in order to be more easily driven by low powered amps, I believe this is what you made reference to. This hobby is about finding your sound and having fun, not being right or wrong, just remember that, all the best 👍
@stimpsonjcat26
@stimpsonjcat26 2 жыл бұрын
@@MusicLover-01 "Fast reactions to dynamix" The push and pull speed of the voice coil does not change due to excursion or voice coil weight. These things can affect the distortion but it has nothing to do with impulse response or speed. More coil and excursion create higher eddie currents. This can add distortion but is usually greatly reduced by shorting rings in the motor. Higher excursion creates more intermodulation distortion and can also cause the cone to flex creating more distortion. These issues are usually easily mitigated with multiple normal sized subs.

I had a friend in the late 1980’s who had twin 21inch Hafler’s build into brick wall cabinets. He had home made electrostatic full range panels that was driven by Luxman valve pre and power amplifiers and the source was a Lin Sondek Lp12 with Grace 707 arm. It was an amazing system, particularly when playing organ music which is what Otto like to listen to as well as classical. Big have been around for many years they don’t work for many people because of the space they need. There not exactly wife friendly. But the sound they make is incredible if implemented correctly. I love what both of you do, So keep it up.

I'm never surprised anymore at the negative reactions. If people can't understand what Devon is trying to do, or have to try and tear it down, good for them, have at it. It's just noise. I like Devon's enthusiasm, inventiveness, approach, and calm, clear ability to convey his thoughts. This thing is obviously not for everyone and as much as it could be for people with enough room and money (I think the driver alone is over $5K), it's a fun experiment to see what can be done and learn from it. It's just unfortunate I don't get to hear it! And I'm not talking about over KZbin.

I just have a couple 15" woofers in my small living room. What Devon said about low excursion is definitely true. Part of the recipe is tuning port lengths to take advantage of cabinet resonance and smooth out response. My port resonance is lower than my cabinet natural resonance. Both of those are below cone resonance.

In doing large scale sound reinforcement in my youth, using a lot of Altec and JBL speakers, it was a known thing that mid and high frequencies "Rode" on low frequencies. This was important in chasing feedback in the day. When you are discussing how the mids and highs sound more apparent with the sub, this is a known thing. The harmonics are surfing the lows...

Articulation and blending are the achilles heel of the majority of subwoofers on the market. Paul klipsch called the phenomenon when using woofers that have to move a lot they generate Frequency modulation distortion. Another issue getting the woofer to come up to speed quickly or rise time. So I am glad you found a woofer that integrates with your with your Altecs. Having used Altecs for discos I used Klipsch MWM enclosures as the subwoofer, but I had to use 16 inch Altec woofer with the edges cut down to 15 inch to replace the Eminence woofers. For highs I would use the MR=902 16 hf as a super tweeter or the Altec UHF 950 -16 ring radiator they developed for the Japanese market. They were flat to 22,000 HZ. Something a JBL 2405 could never achieve. The Jubilee uses a new HF driver with a 2 inch throat that is flat to 19,000 HZ, but to prevent throat emissions from generating turbulence Klipsch has designed vanes to go into the throat to prevent that turbulence. So you don't need a super tweeter. The driver s efficiency with the Klipsch large horn is 109 or 110 db with 1 watt at one meter.

@James Trower If there was a high-pass on the left/right speakers I would understand that, but my understanding from Devon’s description is there is none, which is why I find it interesting. I presume it is something related to the human ear as the sub is adding without changing what the left/right are reproducing (Devon explained in Ken Micallef’s video that he buffers the left & right into one channel and amplifies that for the sub, so there’s zero impact on the left/right output)

@@patrickrosington1174 Horn loaded drivers are very efficient since the horn does a great job amplifying sound (due to constraining the amount of air the driver has to move). This means that the driver in the horn doesn't have to much much to make a lot of volume and can therefore focus on moving more precisely at a given price point. Subwoofers, unless they're really expensive and have enormous magnets, have a general hard time having the nice and fast response that a horn has, and therefore tend to have a wavefront that is out of alignment with a horn in the time domain, and even if they were in time, don't have the same quick transient response.

The MINIRIG sub 3 is a good example of an extremely small subwoofer that was designed for the primary purpose of listening to music and articulate sound reproduction. The drawbacks to a small high excursion subs with a port that you speak of are all true, the Manufacturing company Pasce really did manage to maximize the potential of a small portable, battery powered sub. I had no idea they made 30+ inch subs and that people actually used them. Hope to give some a listen when I get the opportunity.

Interesting. Would have enjoyed hearing a description of the sound of the system with and without the sub by Steve. I use 18" 98dB efficient drivers below 100Hz and they barely move. The surround has a significant impact on sound. I regularly apply brake fluid to the cloth surround which makes the bass even faster. I could imagine adding sub bass like these 30" to my room as infinite baffle. One wall of my 22x20' room has a similar sized garage on the other side. The garage would make a fine enclosure. Not sure what the neighbors would make of it. They'd be hearing just a little low rumble now and then with little to reveal it comes from my place. I'd cross them at 40Hz and drive with plate amps. Given how much my 18's add to the sound stage this would add a lot without filling the room with big sub boxes. They 18's only work down to 34 and start rolling off at 42.

My 21" and 24" sub's have high excursion capability (3" linear) but they don't visibly move at the level I play them rather they just vibrate if you touch them. The surround and suspension is fairly stiff so it has somewhat the benefit of low excursion types.

@@keplermission4947 Listen, I've been designing and building Home Theaters for over 35 years and have acoustics experience for 29 years so I know what I'm talking about. High excursion subs have nothing to do with cheapness and highly compliant suspensions in sub drivers will relegate them to sealed enclosures where the air spring becomes part of the suspension. I think you misunderstood my point. Stiff, minimal excursion drivers will never a sub make. The 32" driver in this video isn't a sub as the owner stated. While what you stated is true in a general sense, it is irrelevant to my point. Also the stiff stage speakers you mentioned generally don't reproduce low bass. Sound reinforcement speakers are designed for relatively high sensitivity and can crack plaster at 50Hz but meaningful 18Hz they won't.

I've been in this game for over 40 years, I know what I'm talking about. The Fostex starts rolling off at 50Hz and even in an appropriate box is down 15dB to 20dB at 20Hz. Today a sub must be flat to 20 Hz to be considered as such, anything above that and it's considered a woofer. Many serious subs today can do 10Hz to 15 Hz at loud volumes. The Fostex in the video is a large woofer, not a sub, and was designed to be such. I hope this clears up your confusion.

Definitely right about finding suitable off the shelf drivers that can do this sort of thing. For musical fidelity faster moving PA drivers are a better choice but yes they don't play as low as dedicated high excursion woofers without having to use dsp to push up the low end. 18inch BMS drivers are a pretty good choice and if you have the space for 2 to 4 of them they don't need to do as much work as a single sub. Its the reason you see those crazy AVS home theatre guys with a wall full of subs. Its not because they necessarily need more DB's but because the extra headroom provided by that many subs means that each driver barely has to move at all to get to the required level. The more cone area you have the faster the setting time of each drivers cone resulting in a faster more effortless and dynamic bass response.

You need to keep in mind that back then speaker power ratings were based on continuous sine wave power. Thats why EV, Altec, JBL etc. had power ratings of 20-30watts. They use much different rating methods today. Those classic woofers would be rated higher with todays rating methods.
@devonojas
@devonojas 2 жыл бұрын
Most of the newer drivers I have worked with are still tested with a pure sine wave (I assume) but then also include a spec for “music power” at more than twice the rated power. Regardless, the VC on the beloved vintage woofers is minuscule compared to most modern sub drivers, which makes them work much better with a lower power amp.

High passing is the best way to go so long as you have your sub to mains very carefully time and phase aligned, but that goes for supplemental sub addition, supplemental sub addition can be more difficult due to drivers having very different responses, so crossing over should actually improve group delay issues, but it’s all to do with time and phase aligning which is so often when not wrongly done then often not done at all, I know what I’m talking about because I used to set up sound systems for arena/stadium size Konzerts, and it’s no different for small rooms, physics is physics, obey the rules or bullshit

Great speaker and discussion! For somewhat more conventional solutions, there is an obvious alternative not discussed here: sealed, big boxes, with big subs (I mean 15 inch or something like that). It's clean, precise, it goes down very low and has none of the huffing and puffing of conventional ported subs, rightly mentioned. I have one for each of the two main speaker, built in as part of the speaker itself, crossed at 40 Hz, with no high-pass for the woofers. They barely work most of the time, but when the content is there, they integrate seamlessly with the rest of the speaker and go down very low, giving also a soundstage depth that would not be there without them

I really like 15-in subwoofers with passive radiators. I use a mini DSP / crossover to dial everything in. My ESS mains are a high passed at 50 HZ. My subwoofers play everything below.

Really fun and informative video! I have four Deepseasound Mariana 24" subwoofers in my system. Very, very musical and fast with very low distortion. Large subs are wonderful for music and highly recommended. And of course, if you can have 2-4 spread through the room, it is possible to decrease nodes/nulls and have very smooth bass across the room. This is the age of larger subs! Bigger is better for sure, even for music!

I wonder about a big subwoofer vs multiple , 15s or 18s. I think the other misconception about bigger woofers other than "plays loud" or "needs a lot of power" is that the bass doesn't sound tight or defined, whereas smaller woofers will produce bass like a great pair of headphones. Truth is there are large woofers that produce accurate bass and small woofers where you can't tell a double bass from a synthesizer and kick drums sound like pillows. That's really more about the enclosure, the mass and electrical Q of the driver, but mostly the listening environment.

Too bad this isn't shot in NTSC interlaced... that jacket would be a riot on screen. Around minute 13 Devon is spot on about bass for the various setups, he's quite good on all of it, actually. At minute 19 you talk about how much better and more amazing soundstage is with a proper sub properly dialed in, and how it effects all the way through the frequency range and amazingly enough -really- impacts in a good way the highs. I, too, have found this to be true (the room acoustics have to allow it, bad acoustics and it can't be done). Cheers.

You could check out the Clarion SRW8000 with the double 4 Ohm voice coil. Much better specs. If the specs hold up in series configuration you will have a minus 3dB point at 17Hz with an SBB4 bassreflex alignment of 1900 liters. Closed kabinet 30 Hz Qtc 0.71 at 1330 liters. Greetings from the Netherlands from an impassioned diy-er.

I looked up the specs and it does look like it would be very nice for infinite baffle though Fs is only 25Hz though so it would definitely be rolling off for the last 8va of the 32' pedal stops. With room gain it should be fine but I have trouble seeing how a single 30" is any better than two 15"s. It simply gets harder and harder to avoid cone flexing and break up as it gets larger. There is also more and more stress on suspension components. I have to admit the sensitivity is impressive.
@LikerVann
@LikerVann 2 жыл бұрын
You need approximately 4,25 15" woofers to get the same cone area. Agreed on your other points 🙂
@mkshffr4936

Just for fun I simulated an IB in hornresp. I have to say I am impressed.It is only down about 6dB at 16Hz. In fact my room is small enough that I would have to add some low cut to compensate for room gain as there is too much output below 40Hz. I haven't looked up price but I suspect these would be just the ticket for large rooms if you have the scratch. So although my other points are I think still valid the performance is likely much better than I initially expected. Mea Culpa.

It's all about sheer displacement. There's no substitution for what this 31.5" Fostex displaces
@mikaelmllersnnichsen539
@mikaelmllersnnichsen539 2 жыл бұрын
Numbers and spec'ed extension only tells you so much. It's the way the bass here is produced, and the 30"-something cone of the Fostex driver moves very little so that flexing won't be an issue in practical use with predominantly music. It's the very opposite type of driver compared to more modern 15" or 18" high excursion (i.e.: 3-4" peak-to-peak) units with large, heavy voice-coils and cones in addition to higher loss rubber surrounds.

Good fast sub bass really adds a foundation that everything else is built on. I have heard complaints that my ESS amt-1bs we're a little lacking at blending in with the lower mid-range. It's very difficult for any woofer to match up perfectly with a lightning fast air motion transformer. Since high passing the speakers at 50 HZ and adding stereo subwoofers the lower mid-range has really opened up and bloomed. I use vmps larger subwoofers with a mini DSP / crossover. This is probably the most coherent system I've ever heard, and I've heard about everything. It's really holographic with well recorded music. I think it's better than any electrostatic system or horn based system that I've ever heard. I've never really heard a highly dynamic electrostat-based system, and any horns I've ever heard always have that irritating horn sound, regardless of the system. A good air motion transformer will do everything that a horn system will do and sound more smooth and coherent doing it. I've been down your road, just not to the extent that you are. Congratulations on an awesome system though. I wish I lived closer. Nobody out my way is really into audio, at least not the way I am.

I think you've hit the nail on the head. A local electronics guru that works on Citation 16's, McIntosh, and more, day in day out, uses a pair of ESS AMT-1's on a pair of large boxed woofer. The only difference is that he hopes to incorporate a ATC 3" Soft Dome Mid between them.

Bass can bring out the highs cos we can hear the contrast between the bass and treble (I reckon). I noticed that with just speakers, building speakers and tweaking the crossover for more "punchy" bass and the treble seems to improve. Crazy.

Turn the subwoofer off for jazz? Hmm. Got the Martin Logan Classic 9's and the Dynamo 1600x. The subwoofer is VERY integrated in this 2.1 system, xover at 35Hz. it hardly ever plays, but have something drop into that 30 Hz. range it speaks up! Pedal pipeorgan and symphonic bass drum hits are pretty much all it does.....musical. I would never shut if off for any reason. It is silent until the source calls for it which is really how you would want it in a STEREO situation. Home theater and the LFE is a whole different animal - agreed.
