Time Magazine is pushing meat again and now hypocritically calling Veganism a counterfactual crusade. So the battle of starch vs. meat in brain evolution ensues.

Eating crickets helped us get a better sleep cause it made the area quieter, thus allowing our brains to rest and double in size every day until the great cricket apocalypse in the year 17.

Buds420King What are you even talking about? It's always the same thing. B12, protein, and human evolution. I really haven't seen much else, have you? There is also usually no scientific research to back them up, just the industries propaganda.

Buds420King Average doesn't mean good or healthy. I mean look at the U.S. now, they are on a standard American diet and 2 in 3 adults are overweight or obese. And as for restricting meat is the best thing to do, I don't know if you realize everyone is trying that, but the population is fatter then it ever has been. When your vegan you don't have to restrict food, or at least carbs, so you don't have to deprive yourself and think about food 24/7.

As a committed vegan, I find your arguments are compelling and well supported by a massive amount of research. I think the Time article is based on the conjecture and assumptions and research designed to support theories as opposed to being derived from direct evidence. There is yet another point, not often made in the debate about meat and brain development. This simple point goes directly against the idea that eating meat makes for a big brain theory. If the protein and fat from meat stimulated brain growth, then true carnivores would have massive brains and the data processing speed of a supercomputer. However it seems to be we starch eating homosapians have the biggest brains and highest IQ's - although IQ alone doesn't seem to matter considering the often flawed logic we seem to follow.

Stewart Bright I do non-competitive powerlifting sometimes which requires a lot of protein. I also have a bad digestive system, so while I don't mind getting plenty of that protein from beans and seeds, their digestive difficulties make it difficult to get protein from them alone. Whey protein powder, eggs, and fish are much easier to assimilate
@stewartbright1928
@stewartbright1928 7 жыл бұрын
Obviously you know you can get all the protein you need to be a non-competitive powerlifter so that isn't really an issue.. I'm unsure of your digestive issues you have.. Could you please elaborate? I am aware that going vegan can change digestion due to a lot higher fibre intake but I'm also aware that after a while your body becomes used to the high fibre and digestive issues no longer prevail

Okay may have been wrong in my research, showed how often Time Magazine featured Mr. Hearst and often went together to file lawsuits, but it terms of owning, Time looks to be its own entity, Hearst owns many of the magazines that often bashes vegans, and Hearst even owns several of the times newspapers probably how the research got mixed up saying he owned time, but a newspaper not the magazine. Still something that wouldn't surprise me as many corporations buy things secretly all the time.

Stop thinking of humans as a mass of people, but instead as the people you love and care for. The people you admire. When you through mankind through your family and friends then I'm sure there's something to be proud of there. Generally, people are naturally good. We can't help the endless feed of lies we've been taught that dictate our decisions. We all begin innocent and loving, society just slowly ruins it...
@Patralgan
@Patralgan 8 жыл бұрын
+Stephanie Stiller I agree with you. Individually a person is good, I always believe that, but we don't always act upon our values and meat eating is one example of that. And since most people eat meat, it makes human kind, as a whole, evil in the planet's and its creatures point of view. We are also destroying our own species' future by polluting earth. I'm also contributing to that with my own selfishness but I try to minimise that and being a vegan is a key part of that.

Cooking and agriculture resulted in the biggest jumps in our elocution when it comes to diet. Cooked food was easier to digest, needed less energy for better nutrient absorption while agriculture meant a more reliable food source. Most common people didn't eat that much meat until after the 2nd world war. It used to be a luxury, reserved for special occasions (hence the idea of a Sunday roast) and the aristocracy. That's why the pales diet is wrong if you look at it historically, as is the raw vegan diet.

I think you should've answered this question (Did meat play an important role on our evolution?) with an explanation about why it isn't even important or relevant to veganism. If we consumed meat in the past to survive or not isn't important, since we don't need to do it anymore and animal agriculture is an activity that is destroying our forests, poluting our air and oceans and causing needless suffering. Discussing wether our brains grew thanks to meat or potatoes is a waste of time. We should be concerned about our future, not our past.

That argument never flies with me. We did rely on the proteins from meat to help us evolve and hunting helped us expand across the world. However, we are now cognizant of other animal's emotions AND have other options for protein and can be even healthier without meat. Human ancestors didn't wear shoes, but so what? We adapt as we learn, THIS is what kept us thriving as a species.

My brother and I have been strict vegans for about 6 months now. We went on vacation with our parents and at a fancy dinner we decided to cheat and order some meat. We were shaking in a cold sweat later with our stomachs doing flips. The rest of the week, my mom started eating mostly vegetarian. She saw first hand what meat does to you if you aren't use to eating it. As miserable as it was, I think it was worth it for her to finally second guess her diet.

It is easy to see that even though there is little change in my activity levels I am lighter happier and can play for hours with my son, far longer then other Dad's I see that are at least 10 years younger. Before going Vegan I was not looking forward to the rest of my life as it was all hard work, now I say bring it on baby!!! its all cool man! :) Your videos are great man, I tend to lead by example as I find this is the best way for most people to come around to the Vegan way but if I get any sci-ency types I will send them in the direction of your videos man. I think his points are good but not quite nuanced enough. There is energy, which needed to "power" the brain. But that does not drive intelligence per se. You need Vit B12 for example for neurotransmission. So it's probably the vitamins in meat that made us smarter, not necessarily what powered the brain terms of fuel. Think of it this way - starches were like the power that a computer needs to run, but the cooked meat help enhance the coding / algorithms, ie it made us smarter.

My mother was born on a farm on the shores of the Firth of Forth , in Scotland. Near the water was what was called the Shelly Bank. It was a massive stretch of cockle and other sea shells - not a natural phenomenon , but an accumulation from many hundreds of years if not a thousand years of marine animal consumption , with the shells being discarded in a gigantic midden that existed for thousands of years thereafter.

I would like to know which tubers Mike was referring to in this video, because potatoes (the most popular tubers) actually originated in what is now Peru. Although, the natives who lived there have been cultivating potatoes for thousands of years before the first arrival of the Europeans, it was this arrival that actually led to its introduction to the Europeans.

I believe the consumption of meat in itself didn't directly kick start the brain size by nutrition. I think that meat was more nutrient dense bang for buck than plants, there for the digestive tract shrank (saving energy) and then gave us a surplus energy in order to facilitate bigger brain size.

Thank you for coming at this topic this way. I have never heard the evidence of this side. I have only ever heard the "humans didn't evolve to eat meat" but we were clearly eating meat as we evolved- something many vegan activists try to just deny this absolutely fact. This makes so much more sense to the reasons we show the kind of dentition and digestive tracts we have, that allow for processing meat, if necessary for survival, but definitely lend toward a plant based diet. And I fully believe with the last fact which was a huge factor in my veganism. Even if we did need meat to survive and evolve. There is literally no reason for the vast majority of the world to be consuming animals.

We leveraged our ability to defend our tribe with weapons. Tribe protectors needed to be well practiced, coordinated, and brave (all through hunting). There is no argument because virtually all examples of human culture came from predecessors who hunted. I personally believe a vegan diet can be healthiest, but that is no excuse to rewrite our past.

I've been saying cooking and starches was the driver of our evolution forever! What makes us so different from other primates are the extra copies of amylase we possess to digest starch, and our ability to utilize fire! If meat was so beneficial to our "big brains", why aren't true carnivores the smartest of all? Or considering that we know plenty of apes including chimps eat a varied amount of meat, why is it us studying them and not the other way around? As you said, plants don't fossilize like bones do, but new DNA testing tells the tale! Shame on Time for pandering to the animal industry profits, I have totally lost respect for their BS agenda! Another very obvious issue is we share almost 99% of our DNA with chimps and bonobos, besides the loss of hair, the most obvious difference is our lower face...our lips, jaws and teeth don't have to work nearly as hard as chimps do to chew our cooked food, so they have reduced dramatically in structure. The meatheads that can't acknowledge these obvious facts maybe need to evolve?
