I usually move 10-20% of my portfolio into cash after a few years of "good times". The rest, I just stand pat in a balanced portfolio. When exciting times like these come, and its a good size dip, that's when I throw about half of the cash back into the portfolio. The other half of that cash is saved to buy back in for when the drop continues to "stupid" levels (e.g. your 2008's, your tech wreck, etc.). Sure, that cash isn't making as much during the good times, but when things turn for the worse, it gets my mindset out of panic selling mode, and into "when do I buy?" mode. And that's a healthy mindset to have. Can I time those 2 purchases perfectly? No. But at least I get to see that portion have a quicker recovery than the rest of the portfolio. If you like this idea - remember - take your time, don't rush - if it bounces back before you buy back in... well, you were still 80% invested, so why complain?

I have a large amount to invest, $500,000 from the sale of real estate. I am a buy and hold, blue chip, dividend investor and I am retired…I decided to split the amount into 3 and invest in same 10-12 stocks every 3-4 months time, so if goes lower I will get a deal or if higher I’m already in and enjoy the gain…in other words, dollar cost averaging investing. I’ve been investing for over 25 yrs and been through many ups and downs. I look at this time as an opportunity to get in. I do keep 15-20% cash on hand for comfort and to cover any expenses without having to sell stocks. At this point in time I take my dividends in cash to keep a cash flow, when younger and growing my portfolio, I reinvested all dividends.

Nice vid, Marc, thanks. One thought: you said an 80% drop takes a 500% gain to recover. It is actually 400%. Magic formula is if price is divided by N, it takes an increase of (N-1)*100% to recover. N=2, Gain=100%; N=3, Gain=200%; ... in your example of dropping 80%, N=5, Gain=400%.

I saw a video recently that basically explained that while institutions are selling, the retail investors keep buying the dip, which sort of gives mixed results in the market, that’s food for thoughts. As for myself I’m gonna keep buying a few stocks every day on the way down. In fact I’m a little sad when we get days like today where everything’s on the green because I don’t really know what to buy lol!

Hey Marc, With the recent dip I've adjusted my portfolio to be alot heavier in REITS(Riocan) due to the ~5% dividend and 20% off its recent highs. A small percent in QQQ and VFV and the rest In Canadian banks, telecoms, and algonquin/Power Corp. I feel like it's a safeish play...with solid overall dividends and some upside growth wise due to the recent correction. What is your opinion on being 50% riocan in my portfolio for risk?

At the 2:00 mark when he said the start of something much worse and much longer nails it. Interest rate in Canada is just 1% at BOC and across the west has been next to nothing since 2008 at a time when insane government spending and inflation is just beginning to catch up to us. This doesn't sound like the floor is near.

I don't know if the dip is over ( kinda short! I'm expecting something longer), but I bought FOUR whole shares of Disney this AM. What about their business justifies such a steep long drop? I propose that it is not justified at all.So apparently I think it is time to buy, if it makes sense. I still plan to put all dividends into something each month. Was hoping CU would come down, but no luck!

What do you guys think of bond ETFs? Specifically (ultra) short-term bonds as the interest rate uncertainty is looming
@beaviswealth2 жыл бұрын
Bond ETFs play a role in a portfolio, as far as I'm concerned. I realize that's a very unpopular statement given the curent times, but I always look over a longer time frame. Short term ETFs would have been better over the past while. Going forward, when you think the rate hikes have peaked, probably adding some longer duration bonds will prove profitable, especially when rates (eventually) start to come down again. Lots of uncertainty now... balance is the key. - Marc

Thoughts on selling a position for a loss and simply moving on??
@beaviswealth2 жыл бұрын
Hey Rick. Sometimes, that's the way to go. I can't comment on your situation specifically, but if you've got a holding that doesn't show much hope for the future, holding on just to avoid a loss doesn't make much sense. If there's another investment you feel could make better use of your money, that's something you might choose to do. Factor in capital loss/gains if it's in a non-registered account. Not sure if you're a member of our Academy or not, but if you are, there's a lesson called "Knowing When to Sell & Cut Losses" in our Master Course. Thanks for watching our channel! - Marc

You think raising intertest rate can resolve the Inflation? IMO our situation is more complication than what we have in the history. i.e. Ukraine and Russia world, US and China conflicts continue, supply chain big interruption, pandemic is not over and we don't know when. A lot of issues more than just raise interest rate. The worse thing is you do see if there is any solution. Looks at the retail companies result, Walmart, Target, Dollars tree poor Q1 result and stocks dropped more than 10% and continue falling. OMG Target down 24% today Costco drops more than 10% today. Any thoughts? Should we hold more cash or should we buy now during the down turn now?
@beaviswealth2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jeffrey. IMO, raising interest rates alone will not resolve inflation, no. The other issues you've listed need to be addressed as well to get us through this. Your cash question comes down to your tolerance for risk, and a strategy that might see you buying into the market at lower prices, if the markets continue to drop. I think it's always a good idea to have cash on hand, and in times like these I typically would buy in stages.. not committing everything at once. Hope you can factor this into your decisions going forward. - Marc
