The number of bags required always amazed me when I used 60 lb bags for a small project. 60 bags per cubic yard. 3"× 3' x 6" takes 10 bags. If I were installing a lift, I might be tempted to saw out a square and dig down about 18". Add rebar and J Bolts.

Yeah, I'm uncomfortable with the lack of depth. I would want that lift anchored on some large piers.

Stoked for this, but a little worried about that floor cracking out around the lift. Seems like real old concrete with not so great strength or thickness,. I would rear out squares and re pour 8 inch thick an make sure to tie in to the old 8 inch to help support since doing just the lift point areas,. We did it in our shop an had a good rep help us with the new sections to tear out and install new flooring , alot cheaper then a new floor an way safe for something that can really hurt you

Just had a flashback to "shake hands with danger" there when that bit slipped just after you were greasing the hole. Seriously though, it's a great way to lose fingers, you should consider using a bit of stick or something to put grease in dodgy places like that. It's easy to say "it'll never happen to me" but that's no consolation if it ever does.

Just a tip, for strong concrete use less water, enough to hydrate the cement, but yours is too runny. It’ll work, but a stiff mix will give you more cured strength. Good to see you getting your shop together, it’s a long haul, but you’ll get there. ❤🇷🇴

Back when I had an old tractor (Ford 850) I found an old 3 point mount, PTO powered mixer for small jobs. Sure beat mixing by hand in a wheelbarrow plus I could mix it anywhere then drive to the worksite and dump it with the pull of a lever.

Congrats on the shop and everything it will become. You may want to put up a quality camera system with both internal and external cameras. It would be partially for security but also to catch things done in the shop that was missed using go pro's or phones. Helps as a backup when the go pros die.

I was thinking the same thing. It's scary to see a repair done incorrectly on something that has potential to be deadly.
@ericschaefer6002
@ericschaefer6002 Жыл бұрын
It doesn't look to me like his concrete repair patch is load bearing, so I'm not too worried about the improvised rebar work creating any safety risks. (Driving over weak concrete isn't too scary, but if one of those posts were anchored into that patch, then there would be much more to worry about!) On the other hand, it didn't look like the concrete in the area that needed repair was very thick at all, which makes me wonder if that floor in general was thick enough to anchor that lift on its own (as opposed to cutting, digging, and pouring a much deeper footing for each of the posts to anchor into.)
@sanjosejeff
@sanjosejeff Жыл бұрын
Next time Rudy, just rotohammer sideways into the slab and sink rebar in 4 or 5 inches then tie an overlapping from the other side. You don’t want rebar to touch soil as it’s prone to rusting and not to code.

Typically, the footings should be at least 2x2 or preferably 3x3 by at least 2 feet deep to withstand the load of the machine plus whatever truck you lift. Personally, I would make it 3x3x3 with "J" bolts hooked to the rebar. That means the rebar must be place so the J bolts line up with the mounting holes on the machine. Alternatively, you can use all-thread the size of the machine's mounting holes with a square retro-fit plate and tow nuts holding the plate on the end of the all-thread. You can cut two peices of 1/2 inch plywood (one for each leg of the machine) and bore mounting holes the exact same as the mounting holes on the machine. Then you attach the all-thread bolts with flat plates to the plywood allowing enough all-thread to stick out above the surface of the floor to bolt the machine. The retro-fit plates should be about 2 inches above the dirt to prevent rust, but still buried in concrete. Look at google images for retro-fitting posts and columns. That will give a visual on what I elucidate above.

Not too warm Ruddy. When concrete goes-off, being too warm will cause it to shrink thus causing cracks or separation from the old slab. Keep the heat low to allow it go-off slowly allowing the moisture to evaporate over a longer period of time.

At a Kmart I worked at years ago, I had a job of repairing a bad section of the floor which apparently was just a borderline pour of the original pad. I got a bag of concrete that had broken open, sifted it with an onion bag, wet the surfaces, mixed the mud and poured the mix in the small hole that I had cleaned out. This was not load bearing area, as it was in a walkway, but it was a safety issue as it was a trip hazard going from one area to another.

Rudy awesome new lift buddy!! I’m definitely wanting to get myself one also hopefully very soon!!! That is what I built my 60’x80’x16’ shop for with a full 6” thick concrete and infloor heat!!! Yes it was a lot of money up front but I definitely did it Wright for sure!!! I definitely can’t weight to get my lift put in because putting lift kits on trucks with out a lift takes much longer by stacking blocks up to set the frames on so that I can use the jacks under the axels!!! By having a lift it will eliminate the use of about a hundred blocks that I used to definitely make it safe from doing any rocking or teatering!! Lol!!! I haven’t desided on a lift yet but I definitely want one that will lift a vehicle up high enough so that I can park another vehicle under the vehicle that might be on the lift!!!

Dad had one of these, in the early 70’s, we used to go get firewood in, and it was a ragtag, wouldn’t stay in second gear mess, but it would out climb and pull everything including the Sierra club Jeeps when they were up in the woods with us.
