Time To Fix My Original XBOX That won't Read Discs!

Thanks chap! I did exactly what this video said and my classic XBox I once thought was dead forever now finally works again. Now I can go back to playing my old medieval themed video games and continue on with Fable without having to start that game all over again. I got so far in that game and was dreading to have to buy another XBox and restart that game. This video was very helpful.

Great job fixing it man! Pro move. You should see which model that is, if it's anything besides a 1.6 you should pull the clock capacitor because it WILL leak on the motherboard, doesn't effect anything, just needs to be pulled before the acid leaks everywhere, not an issue of if, but when

Yeah this was a first for me. It wasn't bad but I edited it out i had to adjust the potentiometer like 4 times. It took hours to get it right. Cuz your adjusting the power to the laser and you have to be careful not to turn it up to much. If i had my multimeter at home and not at work I wouldn't have had to adjust it more than once but it wasn't too bad. Definitely was worth trying to fix. Honestly i didn't know how it was going to turn out but it turned out great. Its fixed. 😃👍

It's cool that you fix it. I've only 4 games on the og Xbox. Unfortunately I don't have the system but I have to make sure that it can be played on the Xbox One. I got Panzer Dragoon Orta, Kotor 2, Crimson Skies, and Jade Empire at a cheap price of $5-$8 each at half price bookstore. These 4 games are my smallest collection on any systems that I owned. I don't remember how many times I sold the og Xbox and I don't regret it at all. It's not a particular system that I want to collect anyway.

Yeah man, i really wanted to get this console working again. Its o e of the oldest models, i got it right after launch and never had any issues till recently. I had to try to fix it. And Panzer Dragoon Orta is a great game that I got when it first came out! It also has the 1st game on the disc. I believe I had to unlock it if my memory is not twisted! But its one of my favorites on the console and it was in great shape it had too work. And work it did man!😁👍

Only issue I have is the price connected to the rails rubs up against the wheel. Which causes it not to run the rail properly. Don't wanna buy a used drive just for that one piece. Not sure if that would fix that.

Glad I read all the comments, I was about to say, you are putting a band-aid on a bullet wound, but it seems the drive finally gave up the ghost a few days later. There were three drive manufacturers for the Xbox. Try to get the Samsung over the Philips or Thompson, as they generally last longer and perform better. Good try man! I did the same damn thing myself.

the best remedy is to just replace the entire laser assembly itself, I bought mine on eBay for about $20. I had tried numerous cleanings and tweaks of the pots, but I finally had enough. After replacing the laser my games booted up on the 1st try without read errors

My XBOX sometimes won't even recognize that there is a disc in it. It completely stopped playing Music CDs some time ago, but now some of my games (all actually), I have to insert and re-insert them over and over again just to get them to load. Oddly enough, DVDs work just fine since I have the Playback Kit. I am afraid my disc drive might just stop working all together at some point.

It's was so you could turn the potentiometer, it was a sort of seal. It's very sensitive so it's only turned the slightest bit.

My Thompson dvd drive has a weird problem, where is plays and read disc fast how it should without any problem and then out of nowhere after 30 minutes or even 2 hours it stops reading the disc and then black screen… but it still sounds that is trying again to read it but fails and nothing happens (and it scratched my forza and halo discs really bad by making a perfect circle). Should I replace the dvd drive or should I turn up the potentiometer

Hi WARTRAIN WINS, I have a same problem with Xbox DVD Drive too. Right now, I just used a Q-tip and some 91% Rubbing Alcohol to gently clean the laser lens, Used the Compressed Air Gun to Blow away the dust that's trapped inside the drive and replace the old driver belt with the new one because of the stuck lid problem as well. I haven't tried it yet, because I still need to put the Xbox back together before testing it. Although I was curious about your video. If cleaning the Laser Lens didn't solve the problem, what was something else that needs to fix in order to make the DVD Drive Read Game Discs again? There's I potentiometer inside the disc drive you can turn up. It's a very light turn. The part is extremely small. It took me a couple times to get right cuz I left my meter at work. But its doable without a multimeter. I go through exactly how to find it and what to do. But still a temp. Fix. Changing the disc drive is the true fix. I was looking for a cheep workaround. It's still working for me, but I bought a disc drive for when it ultimately fails.

Thanks! Very slightly to the right. Its very sensitive. If it's turned to much it will give you a warning about getting it serviced. That means its turn to far and just needs to be dialed back a little. It took me a couple times to dial it in right. I had edited it for the video but it only has to be turned a very slight amount! If you have to do this dont be discouraged if it takes 2 or 3 times to get it right. Just put it back together enough to test it in case you have to adjust it again slightly! Hope this helps! 😁👍

Yeah this happened to me at 1st and it will eventually stop reading disc's completely. The disc dive is on its way out. It's common for them to eventually go bad on original Xbox. Sorry man. I should have. It said to basically to contact the manufacturer and if I'm remembering this right some German writing as well. If that happens you turned the potentiometer a little too much. I had to keep adjusting it a little at a time and putting it back together enough to test it. It took me a few times.

Just a hair clockwise. You may have to try it a couple time wich can be a real pain cuz you have to put the drive back together to actually test it. If you go too much you'll come up with a screen to get it serviced. That means it's too high. If you have a multimeter you can check to see if it's at the correct value of around 3.7 ohms of resistance. It let's more current flow. Digital Powertrip has a good video that shows this. I had my meter at work the day I did this. So without one you have to try it out till you get it right. I hope this helps. Good luck! 😁👍

Man... you HAVE to buy xbox brand component cables! Some games support widescreen, most support 480p some 720p and 1080i! Edit: Panzer Dragoon Orta runs in 480p AND widescreen on older xboxes made before March 2004

It's a potentiometer it only a last resort and gives the drive more current. Only like the smallest turn. If it's too much it will give a warning screen message in German. If it was a clock only a 2 hour turn

Just by the screw. Just to expose it so you can be able to turn it just slightly. I turned it with a small flathead screwdriver.Your basically giving it a little more voltage. If you go to much it'll say that your Xbox needs to be serviced. If that happens then you went a little to far and just take it back a little. Honestly i had to adjust it more than once. So if you do it. Test it before completely putting the system back together. The part that sucks, is to test it, you have to put the disk drive back together. But it is worth trying if it doesn't read discs anymore like mine did.

Just a tips as i did this the other day. If your disc tray belt is bad. Run it under cold water and clean it and then soak it for 10 mins. It will work like new.

Lol, yeah I knew that. I was holding it in place. I had put it together just enough to test it. If I didn't hold it it would have fell apart and I wouldn't have even been able to test. It. Yeah, its very delicate. That's why I tested it without putting it back together and put it together just enough to do so. Like I said I edited the failed attempts or the video would have been way longer. I only turned it about an eighth of a turn and one time turned it up a little too much. It gave me a get console serviced screen with some stuff in German, lol. But ever so slightly turned it down and it worked. There is a better way to just put a multimeter on it to test how many ohms of resistance it has. That's the best way, I just didn't have my meter when I did it. I had it at work and wanted to see if I could do it without since not everyone will have a meter. Thank God nothing was damaged. If a a game got messed up, I would have been pissed at myself, lol! 😁👍

Not sure 🤔, it does sound like something is up with the disc since it reads the other perfectly. If you own a Xbox 360 I would see if it reads the disc to basically unlock the game on their since a good amount of original Xbox games are playable on it. Assuming that game is one of the compatible ones.

Yeah man, no problem. It was a learning experience for me too. I never worked on an og XBOX before. You just have to be careful with the potentiometer cuz your adjusting the power to the laser. I was trying to play Conkers Live and Reloaded, and my xbox has this issue. I put in a music disc which my xbox does read. I did this trick, but I dont think I screwed a quarter turn... not sure how much I need to turn because I dont want to ruin my drive. Hey Brennan sorry to here your having this problem. It is common for these to fail being the age and they were a cheaper part. It sounds like you did most of what you could do. Since it's only reading like one type of disc and most likely doing it poorly. Mine was reading like every 1 out of 10 or more discs and not even doing that good. At this point the potentiometer is the last chance before just ordering a new Disc drive for it. Like myself turning it is hard to know exactly how much to turn it and how much you did turn it. I actually tried it 3 different times. I regret not mentioning that in the video. I edited it for the sake of time. At this point I figured, well this is basically already broke and if it doesn't work I'll just order the drive. So the 1st time i turned it up it worked on a couple more disc's but not all of them. The 2nd time I turned it up too much and I got a screen in German basically saying it was messed up and needed to be sent in to be serviced, and the 3rd time I turned it down just a little and it worked reading all the disc's except the ones that were really scratched and probably wouldn't read anyways. This is a last ditch effort and really a new disc drive is ultimately what you need cuz this will ultimately fail even if you get it to work. Mine is luckily still working but the reality is it is on its way out and I just gave it a little longer. If you made it this far im guessing your mechanically inclined so it may be better for you to swap the drive but if your like myself and want to keep at it you could try turning it up a little more or the correct way is if you have a multimeter wich I didn't have that day cuz mine was at work is put it on the two leads coming off the bottom of the potentiometer to get the correct current 3.7 is what you want to see on your meter. Digital Powertrip - fix original Xbox disc read error is a great video to watch if you want to see this up close. But again, this is a last ditch effort and if it doesn't work you will need to swap it out! Hope this helps man and best of luck to you!

The potentiometer. It very small and covered in some kind of pink sealant. I worked off the pink seal with rubbing alcohol on a Q-tip. It took a bit. Then I turned the potentiometer very slightly with a small flathead screwdriver. Then put the system back together just enough to test it. Cuz it took me a couple times adjusting it right. I turned it like less than a quarter of a turn clockwise. Its very small. At 1st I turned it to much and got a warning in German but then just turned it down a little. It took me like 3 times to get it right

Hey, so I just got my hands on the OG Xbox. It was working fine and playing games until it started lagging really bad and so I thought it was overheating or something. I powered it off and to let it cool. Again because I thought it might need it. When I tried to power it back on the thing wouldn’t open the disc drive and I got an error screen saying I needed to send it in for maintenance. It pulled an error 11. I took it apart and cleaned everything. Motherboard and such. Then I took apart the disc drive and cleaned it as well as replaced the drive belt. Sadly not positive result. Still getting the same error. Any ideas?

Honestly I'm not sure without doing a little research. Sounds like you did a really thorough job trying to get it working. Definitely moves I would have made. I would say replace the disc drive but I've recently heard they cost almost as much as the console. I don't know your financial situation but may be worth grabbing another one. Maybe you can find one for a decent price at a Thrift store or Goodwill and use the one you have for parts.

Hey mate! All my games work except Simpson’s hit and run! It’s annoying me and it comes up with ‘you need to connect the dvd playback kit’. And the Simpson’s hit and run was tried and tested by the person I bought it off on eBay, he tested it on the 360 as it was backward compatible

That is really strange man! My Simpsons hit and run isn't working either but I got it at the Thrift Store and it is pretty scratched up. I need to try it again and also try on my 360. That is really weird man. I have never seen that come up. But I do have a DVD playback kit. I should unplug it and see if I ever have that problem. Sorry to hear that man, I can imagine the frustration you must be having. Especually after buying it and just wanting to play it.

Yes please try it. I looked on forums and ppl are saying older versions of the og XBOX are having problems scanning a select few games. Idk if that’s true or not yeah.

So I put my Simpsons Hit and Run on my 360 and after an update to my console it works in backwards compatible mode. The 360 emulates og Xbox games. So it reads that the disc is in it then basically downloads a version of the game and that's what you are playing. It doesn't run natively off of the disc. So the emulation had some screen tearing but it worked and was playable. So then I tried it on my og Xbox and now my Xbox isn't reading any disc's again. So now I'm going to just order a new disc drive. While I wait for it, I might take it out and try turning up the potentiometer again. Now I have my multimeter at my house so I can now dial the current to 3.7 to see if it works for a bit longer. But ultimately these disc drives are old and they all will ultimately fail. They had cheap drives in them especially the first models like mine. So your disc drive seems to need to be replaced as well. You could try the potentiometer as well. That is the only thing left you can try before replacing it. The channel Digital Powertrip does a good video of showing how to correctly dial in the potentiometer with a multimeter if you have one and want to give it a try. The video on his KZbin Channel is Fix original Xbox disc read error. Good luck man I hope this helps you!

I still have mine the only problem was that I had to fix the sensor other than that still works and all my games are still in perfect condition including my 2 treasured games ultimate alliance and halo 3

Awesome glad its still working! Always worth trying to fix it on your own. Its crazy how some people would just junk it and waste money buying a new one. I've saved a ton of money by fixing them when their fixable!😃👍

I personally see it as if it's already broken then the worst that could happen is that I break it more, nevertheless its still broken and if a fix works its a complete win and if i make it worse i may be upset but i know i tried. That's what mine was doing. The correct thing is to change the disc drive but I'm hearing now how expensive they have become and might be worth getting another console at a Thrift store or Goodwill. Doing what I did in the video slightly Turning the potentiometer slightly may work but is a last resort when you can't get through any games, wich it sounds like your at that point. But I'm not gonna lie its a process a little tricky, and honestly took me a few tries. But did work.

That really sucks, sorry to hear your already having issues. A new disc drive is the real solution. But you could give this a try. Turning up the potentiometer is got to be done the slightest amount otherwise will give a system error that it needs maintenance. Mine was all in German, cuz I went too far. I turned it slightly down and it worked. But still it's just a bandaid for a failing disc drive.

Sorry to hear that. It definitely sucks when this happens, but they all will eventually fail. The disc drive has most likely failed. Mine recently stopped working again. I ordered a new laser lens for it since I already put a band aid fix on it once. I figured it was time just to fix it. I only ordered the lens cuz the disc drive still works good mechanically, it just struggles reading the discs. When I get the part I'm going to change it out. I'll make a video again showing how I did it. But it sounds like it's stuck trying to read the disc and just won't. Mine does that too. Mine occasionally puts up a disc read error and says disc may be dirty to clean it and retry, but it usually is a black screen just trying to read the disc. When that happens I can just hear the disc spinning continuously! Sounds like your at the point where the disc drive needs to be swapped out or like mine where the laser lens needs to be replaced. Microsoft used cheaper quality parts back when they made these, so eventually they will all need replacement parts! Hope this helps!

Yeah im going to make a video swapping it. I bought it on Ebay. It was $18.88 with free shipping. The part I bought is SPU-3141 laser lens for original Microsoft Xbox.

Lol, yeah I know and I do play Panzer Dragoon Orta and other older titles on the newer consoles. But you have to remember im a collector as well as a gamer, so I want to preserve all my stuff and make sure its working. I would do the tsop mod and play games directly from the hdd. That DVD drive will eventually fail completely.

Yeah it definitely sucks! I'm waiting on a new laser lens I recently ordered. Cuz by trying to help someone in these comments by checking a game on my 360 and original Xbox, I found that my Xbox wasn't reading the discs again. Wich I knew it was a matter of time since it has already been on its way out. So when I get the new part I'll most likely make a new video replacing it. By turning up the potentiometer and cleaning the laser lens it definitely bought me some time playing games on it, but was just a band-aid to an inevitable failure! It sound like the laser lens. The same issue im having. Replacing the whole drive will do it. But as long as it works mechanically fine wich it sounds like it does, you could just change the laser lens. But it could mechanically go down the road, so it's up to you. But it's definitely going bad slowly but surely. Eventually it will stop reading more games until it won't read any.

Yes, clockwise. You may have to adjust it a couple times. So don't close it completely, just enough to test it. This took me a couple of tries I had just edited that out for time. The second try I turned it up a hair to much and it gave me a screen in German to get it serviced so I had to turn it back down a hair. So on the 3rd try it worked and then I closed it back up completely. It's a band aid fix just to get maybe 6 months to a year out of it ultimately mine failed Artound that amount of time and I purchased a new laser lens and will be making a follow up video replacing it. If you try this it's make sure plan on eventually changing out the laser lens or complete disc drive eventually. But if your at this point like myself it's a last ditch effort! Best of luck and hope this helps like it did for me and countless others! 😁👍
