I bought this Original XBOX from eBay for £26. It came with 13 games and 2 controllers. It was listed as "Not Working, Spares & Repairs". Will it turn on?... Well, no it won't... But is there anything else wrong with it?
Hope you enjoy!

Yes, I know I said it hadn't been powered on for years literally 2 minutes after plugging it in, but that's because I'm stupid. I checked all the capacitors on the power board and they were all in the microvolts, just to make sure it was safe to work on. 😬

shit happens ;) If you want to do a Recap, pls use 16V/3300µF Panasonic FM for the 3300µF/6,3V Caps. 1500µF/6,3V Paasonic FM seems to be a decent replacement for the Nichicon HD around the CPU Socket. in Voltage Regulation Circuits, the Impedance of the Capacitor is as important, if not more important than the Capacity....

Lucky you that one of the power pins was loose and disconnected, otherwise those capacitors would've been live and dangerous.

It's a shame that so many Xbox's have so many problems, who knows how many consoles throughout the years have been tossed because they stopped working, or something as simple as the disc tray stopped opening. The xbox original is one of my favorite consoles and it has so many classic games. If you became quite familiar with them, one could probably make a decent living fixing them, since 90% of the problems are either with the fault disc drive or the clock capacitor. Thanks for fixing up this great machine!

What a nice lazy Saturday afternoon treat. I just worked on one of these, a first generation model bought in April 2003. It used to power up and go into the menu a few months ago but now has the flashing red and green light with error codes 11 & 7. I need a new drive. Removed the clock cap, which was surprisingly okay. Mine is October '02 also but has a Phillips DVD drive and a Maxtor HDD. 13:39 the spot welded tabs show polarity.

Love your videos Steve and you are correct, like others have said, its basically a dongle or a way to bypass the main menu so you could watch DVDs on the Xbox. It originally came with a remote and you had to buy it separate from the system itself. You couldn't watch DVDs without that dongle. If you soft-mod the Xbox and put XBMC on it, you can watch DVDs / DVDRs / CDRs without the need of having that dongle.

There are many texts and videos out there about this faulty clock capacitor. It should be removed in all older XBoxes since it's known to damage stuff around it. A mod chip might also be a great addition to it. That way it might make a cool media center device. These XBoxes are incredible fine consoles. Even for today. They deserve to be repaired and preserved! Good job on this one, Steve. I love all your repair videos. They gave me the impulse to finally learn soldering etc. Thanks for all your amazing videos!

I've got a modded one sitting in storage that I fixed after I messed up loading XBMC. I managed to get the hard drive unlocked and readable by the pc I used to fix it by booting the Xbox and unplugging the hard drive data cable from the Xbox during the boot splash screen. Then plugged it into the PC when I had the bios boot sequence paused. This allowed the PC to see the drive as a native drive and allow read/write access.

just blows that all of them will die due to leaky Caps... So if you have an OG XBOX, you have to open it up and replace the Clock Caps and the high water containing Ultra Low ESR Caps with suitable replacements (Panasonic FM! and ONLY those are suitable. As they are the only ones I found with similar Impedance to the Original Caps)
@stevenbenson9976
@stevenbenson9976 Жыл бұрын
Don’t remove the clock cap in the 1.6 as it will NOT work without it. It also is a better quality and rarely if ever fails. You have the best xbox model which is 1.1. It has a 1 Meg bios chip on it. It can be TSOP flashed without requiring any mod chip at all and you get the full benefits of the mod chip as a result. You can also opt to split the TSOP into two banks of 512 and install a switch to alternate between the two. you really really should mod this as you can change the EEPROM to read that it is an NTSC model and then it’ll open up the HD resolutions with an applicable component or HDMI cable. The Euro models are stuck in 480p until the mod is complete. You may also if you want an additional challenge install the missing 4 ram modules to get it up to 128 MB of ram, which makes emulators a bit better specifically the N64.

I work for a retro game store and I actually offer the removal service for free to any customers that own an OG Xbox, because if left unattended, that cap WILL destroy the board at some point, if it hasn't already destroyed it, good job recognizing the leakage your first go-around!

The smell is mold. Mold spores impregnate plastic, after which it becomes impossible to stop it from going musty. I lived in the basement of an abandoned factory for a while, with black mold and mice as my roommates. The mold turned my computer sticky and screwed up the fans, causing overheating. When I took it into the shop, the tech refused to even open the case, saying it reeked of mold. He warned me it would eventually kill the whole system. The corrosion on the outside vents shows this Xbox has been sitting in damp environments, and the plastic is thoroughly infested with mold, hence the musty smell. There's no way to get rid of it without completely replacing every piece of plastic.

@@samholdsworth420 I've lived in worse. Spent one winter in a shed, huddled with a blanket around a candle trying not to freeze to death and sh!tting in a bucket.

Hey there Steve! I have just found your channel and I am now addicted!!! I am a music teacher in a high school and I have several m audio midi keyboards that have failed. Would you do a video on one if I sent you one? I know this is a very cheeky ask but worth a try. 😏 If not, thanks for the great content anyway.

Hey Steve, my Name is André, I#m from Germany. I love your channel and would like to thank you kindly for your fun and interesting soldering/repairing videos! I just got to know your channel a few days ago and kind of binged a lot of your videos since. Actually, I'm as far as considering a soldering kit etc. for myself. Can you give any recommendations for a certain kit or whatever material I need? I would absolutely love a video about how to start soldering, best practices, materials, etc. Greetings!

I used to work for Microsoft repair those Xboxes. The power supplys were most the time the issues.but if you have any other issues with them i.e dvd drives or hard replacement....you have to marry the circuit board, dvd, and hard drive together and require special disc to reset everything....obtw I still may have those discs if needed. Love your videos keep up the great work! From the other side of the pond!
