Great to see the weather is doing much better now. 12 to 20% is a huge loss, I've never gone more than 6% in my cattle but most years we are over 100% calf crop because of twins. The Sheep are on average 4% loss but with triples we've gone over 200% live crop at weaning.

Would you be better off lambing a few weeks later. More grass and maybe better weather
@vwvw47 ай бұрын
I was told by a vet, when first starting with sheep, over 2% mortality I should reassess my husbandry. But rare for anyone to lamb the numbers you do, in this area. I only ran 200 ewes and all lambed in the close pasture or in a barn, typically in May, so easy to do night checks every 2 hrs. and keep ewes with triplets/ quads/quints in lambing pens, so very low mortality. When you are lambing over a thousand and no shelter, the mortality is bound to go up. I've always been curious, do you not have better weather in May, then your grass is up and lambs are ready for market later, when the auctions have less lambs and better prices?

Have you had any TB test on the cows yet? Hopefully the deer stay away from them.
@Mountjubilee_farm7 ай бұрын
Did ya try the can of lynx spray both lambs heads and tails and on the ewes nose the ewe won’t be able to tell the difference between either lamb then between her own lamb and adopted lamb .
@joepalmer78597 ай бұрын
When you’ve got two singles and your putting lambs on, the best thing is to swap their own lambs over. That way they’ve got two new lambs and don’t favour their own.

I think you’re way off with the 20% losses stat!! Im an average farmer lambing outside and if I lost 20/100 I’d pack it in!!

thats from scanning time to whek they are sold. its fairly accurate tbh, you dont count them until you have money in pocket, plenty will doe from here till September

NZ lamb losses sit at around 15-18% with ewe losses at around 4.5% We lamb outside - lamb prices here are crap NZ$110 for a lamb at the market which is 61.08 EUR and cull ewes NZ$67 or 37.20 EUR they do not survive on sheep farming alone
@tommitchell18267 ай бұрын

Agree ,sheep farming in nz is a race to the bottom.Throw in a drought and a loss for wool and its a complete shit show.
@wendyrowland77877 ай бұрын
It really is disgraceful. Retired sheep farmer in Wales here. Just had a Sunday roast of Welsh lamb shoulder, it compared very badly with the quality NZ leg we had recently. You produce a consistent quality product that takes a lot of beating. I don’t understand why you are not getting a fair price.
